R220. Matte paper. 2880?

R220. Matte paper. 2880?

2007-03-18 by rockfordinvestigations

It seems to me that the matte paper setting in the R220 print driver won't allow 2880 printing
(called Photo RPM.)

I'd like to be able to use the 2880 setting (and the additional micro-weave setting) to reduce
micro-banding.

When I've switched to one of the glossy settings to force the issue, the resolution part looks
fine, but the tonal curve is off, esp. lightening all of the darkest gray values. (I've since
confirmed this with density step wedges.)

I don't mind the longer print times, and would like the extra bit of quality on the prints. Any
advice on this?

Changing paper type affects the ink limits. Matte papers require more ink to
reach the maximum density than the glossy ones, hence the result you have
got.

Theoretically, you should be able to manually increase the ink limits for the
glossy paper somewhere in the Advanced settings of the printer driver,
however I am not sure how this could influence the colour fidelity - maybe
reprofiling would be required.

I do not know how to force windows (?) driver to use the max resolution for
matte paper.

Thanks for the response.

I'm using a mac, doing black only printing, and I've tried some variations with glossy
settings and then trying to move the tones around with both dot gain profiles (a la
Clayton) and gamma settings. However, it's just not getting close enough, mainly with lost
detail in the shadows.

I have a feeling that it's just not possible to do 2880 with matte on this printer. Maybe in
the future when I get a bigger model (4000?) it might be able to do 2880 with matte. I'd
like to find out if that's a possibility.

I believe that if you put a PK or PKN chip on the Eboni cartridge you will get all the options.
Check Paul Roark's website, I think that is where I saw the hack about changing the chips.
As Milan said you will have different ink coverage depending on the setting you use. I've
gone to using Photo RPM when using glossy and silver type papers (Crane SR, etc.) on my
220s as it does eliminate the very faint microbanding that non RPM shows under a glass, but
haven't seen a need for it with matte papers. I have been using UTR2 and UT3D inksets with
profiles so I'm not exactly sure how the BO would fare. The chips are easy enough to change
and it's easy enough to run few test prints at different glossy settings to see what happens.
It's the great thing about that printer it's cheap enough to play all you want!

I'll try that, but I think it's the selecting of paper type that gives
the different options.

Maybe it's limited for a reason, so I could be wasting my time. 1440
on matte with the R220 might be the only way to go.
