Weird noise then all lights flashing red on my 2100

2007-05-13 by Steve Kale

Hi there

I am suddenly having a problem with my Epson 2100. Quite often now (more often than not)
when I send anything to be printed it makes a horrible graunching noise and then all the
lights flash red. A power off and on usually clears the problem but is tedious. Any ideas? I'd
love an excuse to have the little 2400 next to my 4800 but perhaps this issue is not so
terminal....

Thanks

Steve

Steve, it might have to do with paper weight and mechanical wear. Some
have speculated that 2200 (2100) are damaged when heavy papers are fed
through the top slot. I think I've experienced that with my 3 yr old
2200 ... it did accept without complaint for perhaps 25 sheets of
300gsm, but then stopped accepting. It works reliably with 205gsm.

I¹ve always loaded heavy paper correctly through the back but it does sound
like something to do with the paper feeder...

Hi Steve,
Sometimes a dirty rail the carriage rides on can cause this. Wipe it
down with a lint free cloth and the lubricate very very lightly with
a light machine oil and the lightly rub off excess.

In my experience this happens when something
jams the head and some kind of clutch
mechanism in the printer is forced to
disengage. Look for paper jams hidden inside
or, if you are running a CFS look for the
tubes hitting the drive belt or elsewhere -
they will easily jam the head, if they touch
any part of the machine.

This is exactly how my 1280 behaved when the wiper blade got so gunked up with ink that

Steve:

Sorry to come in late on this, I've been away. I had the same problem
with my 2200.

The problem, at least in my case, was that the little white knob (or
lever) holding back the print head was not releasing. It is connected
to something further back that will have to be lubricated. I went
gung ho and lubricated everything that looked like it might need it.
In the meantime I would push down the lever when I wanted to print,
and it would print. Took a while to get to that point with much blue
air.

No it's not terminal, and the machine is printing very nicely now
with no complaints.
