I never thought I would ever consider doing this, but after a lot of thought I am thinking about buying an Apple G4 Powerbook 667, 1gb Ram, 48gb HD. They are just so nice looking. I have been looking at notebooks for the past week. I need one to take on photo outings now that I have a D1x. Any thoughts? I think this is appropriate for this list? After all, it will be used for digital b/w. Mike

I've been using my Titanium for almost a year now (got one of the first) for all things photoshop. It's fabulous... (except it has to go in for repair as it is falling apart in one corner), although there are times I need to use the old powermac and I am looking forward to a new tower, this G4 Powerbook is just fine for most things (digital black and white included)... and now with the new LCD spyder It'll rock even louder. Besides, what is better than being mobile with your images... The only thought I have is that outside the monitor is difficult to use... depending where the sun is, where you are, your sunglasses <g> Carolyn

Carolyn, The G4 Powebook does appear to be a bit delicate, but I guess that is the appeal. A lightweight laptop to travel with. Whats up with the corner falling apart? I also looked at the Compaq Evo 600 series. Very nice but a 14.1" screen and only 512mb ram. Nice thing is that it has a damage warranty available. Mike

Mike, that white apple notebook computer is gorgeous Most of their note books are nicely designed. I'm not sure I really liked the lime green clamshell of a couple years ago though!! If I had a notebook computer that would be the one I would want! I know many people could care less about how something is designed, and wouldn't know good design from a speedbump. But One thing you have to give apple credit for is good design. Seen the new iMacs yet? Not for graphics people, but sure is nice on the eyes. Jerry mkravit wrote:

Mike, I'm not sure why it is happening... Pieces started to break off the frame, the screw came out in the back, one of the hinges is now out and more pieces have broken off. I always buy the Apple Protection plan so it should be alright under warranty. No, I have never dropped it, I baby it... There is a tiny piece that broke off the front of the frame where it closes a few months back but I can never part with it to get anything fixed, now I'm forced to. The screen is amazing... wide, I like it. As for the compaq... no comment. <g> Carolyn

Jerry, The powerbook is silver, not white. The white notebooks are the ibooks... they are sort of brushed white looking to me. My son is getting one. Another son has the Ruby imac. I personally don't like the new imacs, except the screen but the specs impressed me. My sons older (like a year) imac also works well enough for black and white photoshop work when necessary... soft screen though. Best, Carolyn

I've been using a TiBook G4 for a year with no problems on my travels. It's worth it over an iBook not only for the wide screen and lighter weight, but also the video out will drive a 21" monitor in 24bit as an extended desktop - palettes on the Ti (iBook has limited video mirroring). Wouldn't sell it for this reason - as it's a desktop replacement. Wouldn't sell my Cube either, but have regularly updated desktop towers (I find too noisy now). Colour calibration is hopeless on any LCD screen, worse on laptop LCD. Battery life on the go can be as little as 2hrs with Wacom tablet, bus-powered Firewire drives & USB bits plugged, but the recharge is quick. --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@y..., "mkravit" <michael.kravit@w...> wrote: > thought I am thinking about buying an Apple G4 Powerbook 667, 1gb > Ram, 48gb HD. I've been using a TiBook 500 for all my color and b/w photoshop work, and as a Final Cut Pro editing station .. its got plrenty of power, and the fact that it takes almost no room on my desktop has turned me into a laptop believer (until i had the TiBook all i used were desktop machines .. now both my PC and my MAC are laptops ..) .. throw into the mix an airport hub, and you can do your b/w work from just about anywhere in the house ... .. though for color calibration, i've hooked it up to an external monitor .. and calibrated the monitor .. calibrating an LCD is a waste of time, since its colors shift depending on viewing angle.. -- ricardo ----- Original Message ----- From: "mkravit" <michael.kravit@...> To: <DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 30, 2002 7:04 PM Subject: [Digital BW] Anyone using an Apple G4 Powerbook for digital B/W? > I never thought I would ever consider doing this, but after a lot of > thought I am thinking about buying an Apple G4 Powerbook 667, 1gb > Ram, 48gb HD. The question of the best portable companion for a (different) digital camera has preoccupied me some too. But even before the larger, 14" iBook was recently released, I was having a hard time convincing myself that a "TiBook" was a better value than an iBook. I guess the faster processor combined with the faster hard drive might result in faster downloads from the camera to the Book, but I'd like some facts and figures on that. My TiBook/iBook ambivalence might result partly from not knowing much about how either would be used with a digital camera. But I also have the impression that the iBooks are more robust/rugged and that would be an advantage for me. I went to an Apple Store recently to see the larger iBook alongside a TiBook and did not see an appreciable difference in the _size_ of their screens. But I'm not sure the shape/format of the screen isn't a factor too. I'm assuming it would be used to preview the image before losing the chance to capture it differently (as well as to store it and give the memory back to the camera)? There's also the question of which 'Book would better supplement your desktop when you're at home. In my case, I might use it both as a print server and as a cd burner, but I guess the iBook could do just as well at those things too? Sam

I'm using a iBook 600 with 640mb of RAM as my D1x traveling companion. I have a LaCie 20gb firewire pocket drive for extra storage. I like the small size of the ibook. I also think it might be more durable than the G4titanium. I calibrate the monitor with a Spyder made for LCD displays with Optical. It doesn't have a PCMCIA slot so you need to purchase a USB card reader to download files without using your cameras USB or Firewire connection. I find that a SIIG CompactFlash Card Reader ($20) is cheap, extremely small and works great with my 1gb Microdrives. I had a weekend shoot several weekends ago, where I took 2000 shots...simply interchanging the 1gb Microdrives into the laptop...much easier than changing film every 36 exposures. I edited the photos while I flew cross country and emailed the photos to the press when I landed. A long way from my film days. You can see how quickly digital cameras pay for themselves if you do the math. Robert On 1/31/02 12:13 PM, "Sam A.
