Red River Greenpix recycled paper

Red River Greenpix recycled paper

2007-10-17 by Richard Smallfield

Hi,
I wondered if anyone had tried this paper and how they found it.

Reduction of the impact of our photography on the environment is, I am sure, something that will be of interest to many of us.

This paper is only single-sided and is bright white, unfortunately.

http://www.redrivercatalog.com/browse/greenpix.htm

100% post consumer recycled fiber
Photo weight and thickness
Coated with top quality inkjet coating
Archival Quality Base Stock - Alkaline pH and Buffered for Longevity
Process Chlorine Free (PCF)

thanks,
Richard

The Green paper with the 1800 3-MK only hit 1.57 dmax, which put it a little
below the cut line. Other than that, it was a nice paper. It's not overly
bright, at Lab B = -2.

I just discovered Red River Paper. Has anyone tried their Aurora
Natural, River Linen, LuxArt Satin Rag for BW printing? Or 3MK?

Any comments on dmax or subjective feeling, banding, flacking etc.

Many thanks,

RE: [Digital BW] Re: Red River Greenpix recycled paper

2007-10-18 by Paul Roark

The Red River Aurora Natural is a nice, smooth non-OBA paper similar to
Premier Art 205 (Epson Scrapbook), but the paper base is just slightly
whiter. The dmax was about 1.62 with the 3-MK approach. The brightened
version didn't make the cut at 1.56. While it's not in your list, Polar is
like Premier Art's Matte BW, with a 1.69 dmax and very cold base. I didn't
try any of the glossy papers due to my view that MK is not the right ink for
that surface.

Red River Aurora

2007-10-19 by Paul Roark

Based on the mention of Red River here a few times I went back and have
taken a second look at their papers. I must say the Red River Aurora
Natural is one heck of a bargain. See
http://www.redrivercatalog.com/browse/auroranatural.html It looks a lot
like Moab Entrada Natural, with a dmax that is a hair less, and a price that
is way less. It's even less than the Premier Art 205 that I think is a
bargain.

Red River is now on my preferred paper list. A set of QTR curves for R1800
3-MK workflow are posted at
http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/QTR-R1800-RedRiverAurora.zip

Red River Ultra Pro Satin 2.0

2007-10-19 by Paul Roark

Having been impressed with Red River Aurora Natural on the 1800, I tried RR
"UltraPro Satin 2.0" with the PKN I have in the 260. It's very impressive
-- a low reflective semi-gloss (RC I believe) surface that has no serious
reflective artifacts and doesn't even seem to show pizza wheel marks. The
dmax is 2.45. The surfaces of the paper are acidic, but the interior
appears to be buffered, according to my acid pen. It seems similar to the
Epson Premium glossy types in that respect. See
http://www.redrivercatalog.com/browse/cat=1&prod=20.htm It's closer in
price to Costco than to the Epson Semigloss. The 260 PKN QTR BO actual
picture image is probably better than what I've seen on either of these
other papers with any other printer I've used.

I've posted a new QTR profile for the 260 and Red River UltraPro Satin 2.0
at http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/New-QTR-Profiles.zip

For simplicity (for me) I'll start using this general zip file for new QTR
profiles for any printers. Right now that means the 1800 and 260. If
profiles are incorporated in QTR downloads I'll get them out of the zip file
to keep it reasonable. If the printer type is not obvious from the file's
names, the printer names are inside the *.qidf files, which can be opened
with Notepad.

Arches #140 w/3MK (was:Re: Red River Ultra Pro Satin 2.0)

Paul,

I know you've used the 3mk on Arches #140Bright White HP.

I'd like to know if you've tried the NATURAL version.

I'm wondering if the dmax is the same (or higher!) as the Bright White
version.

Thanks,
Scott

Paul,

Have you tried printing on this paper with 3-MK?

I have not tried the Natural. I assume it is warmer – could be interesting
for some uses.

As with all glossy types of paper, Eboni MK will not stick. Spraying might
nail it down, but I don't think it'd be worth the effort.

Paul,

BTW thanks for the Red River profiles and comments. I already have
some on order. :)

I just had this crazy idea. If 3MK works for matte paper, could one
use 3 of the remaining channels for a 3PK glossy approach?

I know it would not be as pure carbon on cotton. But might be a 'nice
to have' for some?

1800 with 260 RC glossy inks (was Arches #140 w/3MK & Red River Ultra Pro Satin 2.0)

2007-10-20 by Paul Roark

Denis,

>... If 3MK works for matte paper, could one
>use 3 of the remaining channels for a 3PK glossy approach?

The 260 RC inks (bulk) are the ones I'd look at. See
http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/R260.htm for a description of the inks.
The PKN and PKC (cooler than the PKN) and midtone dilutions of them might be
very interesting in the 1800. I'd use QTR, not the Epson driver. I suspect
the 1800 will band with just one channel, so it might take some
experimenting to see what makes the best combination. I don't really think
the light midtones are needed with a 1.5 pl printer. My first shot might be
to try the PKN with a couple neutral dark midtone channels. Two bottles of
ink and three carts should be a reasonable start.

Paul, do you have any idea if the 260 QTR settings would work as
starting points for my R220 with UT-R2 or are you using a totally
different ink setup? I haven't yet been able to figure out QTR to the
point of having printable profiles with the R220.

The 260 uses a new inkset with different dilutions and tones than the R2
inkset.

> I haven't yet been able to figure out QTR to the
> point of having printable profiles with the R220.

The only QTR profile I have for the 260 is for black only printing. With
the full inkset installed, I use the Epson driver. So, you might just start
with whatever 220 R2 settings work best for the Epson Premium glossy papers
or other similar ones.
