ques. from newbie re:MIS inks

2007-10-19 by Frank Jay

hello all,
I just ordered the three inks from MIS to use with the Epson R1800. I was told that I had to use the OEM inks with the 1800 first to get it up and running (it is new) then switch to the MIS inks, purge out the old GO and black inks, then I will be ready to print.

Is this accurate information? It seems like a waste of ink or is the waste neglible.

This is my first of many questions, but I will read all the links, files etc before I ask.

thanks in advance for any help

It used to be said that new printers had a preservative in the heads that
was best cleaned out with Epson inks. I'm not sure that is correct now.

If there is a problem, Epson will certainly ask if you're using OEM inks.

It might be worth just putting in the inks you want and seeing if the system
works. If it doesn't then go to the OEM inks and see if they help.

My experience was with two new R220's. One of them got the OEM inks
that came in the box. When I turned on the printer, the registration
and warranty screens came up and everything was fine. The other
printer got the MIS inkset. When I turned on the printer a screen
came up asking me if I was aware that I was not using Epson inks and
if I was aware that bad things were about to happen. "Yes" I said.
The registration and warranty screens did not appear. I made some
prints and everything was fine. For me, the only difference between
OEM and MIS was the "opportunity" to register the printer with Epson.

Not to worry. Epson does this all the time to scare you into buying
the OEM inks. The prinetr is practically free, the money is in the
inks. Jot down the model # and the Serial # (on back of printer), then
go to the web site and manually register your R220 (or what ever
printer you have). Registration is important. Every once in a while,
Epson runs afoul of the law, and replacements or credits are issued
based upon registrations. Also, your warrenty is good, even if you
don't use their OEM inkset, unless they can prove that your inkset
caused the failure. I'm on my 10th or 12th Epson printer, always with
non-OEM carts. I have to admit, however, that I do keep the original
carts in a plastic bag, and re-install them when I send the printer in
for repairs (only happened 2 times, no problem from Epson).
