Dilemma - 2200 or new printer?

Dilemma - 2200 or new printer?

2008-01-03 by Lawrence Beals

I have an odd sort of dilemma here. I have a new in the box (only
opened for inventory) Epson 2200 that I bought before the Navy decided
to re-prioritize my life. Now that I am retired I am looking to get
back into photography full time - I think the term is "selfishly
employed". Most of what I have shot in the past couple of years has
been split between weddings/portraits (which the printing for is
handled mostly off site) and personal projects, mostly B&W landscapes
and astrophotography.

So should I break out the 2200 or ebay it to someone who already has a
2200 workflow in place and buy a R2400 - especially since the local
CompUSA has a bunch of R2400s and they are going out of business.
Realistically, I would rather be out shooting than tweaking my
printers. After spending 26 years doing nuclear power (and computer
networking etc as a collateral duty) I am sure I can handled the tech
side of things but would just rather be out shooting than slaving over
a hot printer all day. I do want the ability to produce a print that
is acceptable for gifting and hanging personally on site.

If I stay with the 2200 should I convert it right from the start to a
B&W inkset or just play with the OEM inksets until I sort of the
inevitable tech issues. I am using a MacPro desktop, but mostly
directly booted into Win XP along with CS3 and Lightroom.

thoughts?

Hello Lawrence,

The 2200 is a fine printer but can't do good BW as is. At the very
least you'll be using a RIP with the Epson inks. That's not too bad a
route but has a learning curve with the RIP, a certain look/feel to
the prints which you may or may not like, and an inkset that is two
generations behind Epson's latest(doesn't do nearly as well on glossy
papers). The Epson inks will be more expensive than 3rd party inks.
If you go for 3P inks then you'll be additionally dealing with
refilling carts or a CIS and all that that entails. Right now getting
refillable carts is iffy because of thorny legal issues. The only
thing it can do the 2400 can't do is good Black Only printing.

If that's the case then I'd seriously consider the 2400. It will
print on all currently available papers, will produce beautiful
results with unprecedented ease of use, will hardly ever clog, etc.
The inks will cost more than 3P inks. It can be used with a RIP for
finer control, and with other inks, if you ever get motivated to go
that route. Basically it will do everything the 2200 can do (except
BO) and much more.

There is a simple workflow outlined in article #9 at the link below
that will give a good idea of what using a 2400 is like.

Regards,
Clayton

Forgot to add that the 2400's ABW prints, using three grayscale inks,
produces beautifully smooth tonal transitions that the 2200 can't
quite match. 2200 prints aren't bad, but ABW prints have a special
something that's quite nice.

The K3 inks also have better longevity ratings than the 2200's UC inks.

Clayton

Lawrence,
I'm sure you will get a lot of good answers to your questions
here. Another good source is the Feb 2008 (current issue) of
Shutterbug Magazine. This entire issue is devoted to B&W Photography.
The article "A New B&W Inkjet Option" by David Brooks (whom I hold
in high regard)discusses setting up some Epson printers to be able to
print B&W using carbon inks and still use them a full time color printers.
Hope you find this useful! - Tom

I don't know about robust but I was amazed when someone in a previous
message referred to the 2200 as a lemon. It not only was capable of
excellent prints, I never had the first problem with mine in the 3 or so
years I owned it. I now use a 3800 only because of its ability to make 17"
wide prints. The prints from the 3800 are otherwise essentially identical to
those I made with the 2200 (in each case using QTR).

Here's another perspective on the 2200 . . . I've been told by techs
who repair huge numbers of Epsons that the 2200 is a MUCH more solid
machine than the 2400 . . . They recommend that anyone replacing a
2200 go right to the 3800, which is also considered (by them) very
reliable The 3800 is bigger, of course, and more money -- but not
hugely more than the 3800.

This is not to knock the K3 workflow . . . just to state what some
consider a drawback of the 2400. I know that Clayton and others love
the 2400 workflow, and I'm not in a position to disagree (not having
one).

If it were me I would get the 2400 and not look back. The K3 inkset does a great job with the Epson printdriver and is absolutely robust when compared to the 2200. Even Jeff Schewe admits to the 2200 being one of the lemons in the Epson pie. I have had both and love the 2400. Reliable and consistent

- Tom

2008-01-05 by Eric Neilsen

I have a 4800 and picked up a used 2200. Any Epson printer offering the
current ABW printing options with a K3 ink set would be hard to beat. If you
have one printer and want to get the most out of it, a 2400 would be the
price point for you.

$$ and cents allowing, use any old 2200 for BO ink set and have fun.

Re: [Digital BW] Re: Dilemma - 2200 or new printer?

2008-01-05 by Mitch Greenwald

Here's another perspective on the 2200 . . . I've been told by techs
who repair huge numbers of Epsons that the 2200 is a MUCH more solid
machine than the 2400 . . . They recommend that anyone replacing a
2200 go right to the 3800, which is also considered (by them) very
reliable The 3800 is bigger, of course, and more money -- but not
hugely more than the 3800.

This is not to knock the K3 workflow . . . just to state what some
consider a drawback of the 2400. I know that Clayton and others love
the 2400 workflow, and I'm not in a position to disagree (not having
one).

[Digital BW] Re: Dilemma - 2200 or new printer?

Hello Mitch,

FWIW, I had a 2200 for 23 months when the paper feed mechanism died,
and there have been several other similar reports over past couple of
years. That's the only weak point I'm aware of. Otherwise it was a
super printer. My 2400 is now at 28 months and going strong, with
nary a peep or whimper. I don't doubt what they told you, but purely
on mechanical terms for me the 2400 has outperformed the 2200.

But surely they have reasons for saying that. If you get a chance to
talk to them again it would be nice to have some specifics

Regards,
Clayton

The 2200 is a fine printer but use of alternative inks Vs OEM does put
it at risk of clogging and the garbage heap.

The OEM inks are exquisite for color and with QTR printer driver for
B&W. You will get slightly better neutrality with 2440 but you may not
even prefer the look...I've seen many very fine B&W from many
photographers from both printers and the beauty of results obviously
remains in the photographer's eye, not in the printer. In particular,
routine 2440 is nowhere near as exciting as carefully done 2200...in
other words, Photoshop remains critical, as does skillful use of QTR
with 2200.

Similarly important is paper selection. Don't believe anything you
read, get some sample kits from dealers and test. Many on all Forums
praise their favorite papers without testing alternatives.

one of the lemons in the Epson pie. I have had both and love the 2400.

[Digital BW] Re: Dilemma - 2200 or new printer?

2008-01-05 by djon43

There's regular discussion on other forums, speculating about
discontinuance of 2400 fyi. Epson would like to replace it with
amateur printers like 1800/1900 and even downstream). The economics of
3800 make it a more attractive machine, both to Epson (ink
packaging/inventory and exclusivity) and to the buyer (price of
machine with ink, price of ink over the long haul for
semi-professionals and professionals).

2200 does quickly suffer drive problems from use of heavy (eg 300gsm)
paper, top loaded (rather than from rear) and from use of iffy paper,
and from use of certain art papers that are known to shed inside, and
from bizarre, unnecessary cleaning practices (just use printer
cleaning paper from an office supply store, don't feed Windex-wet
paper through the printer).

I may have bought a 3800 if it did roll paper. I came close, but it's
hard to do my popular panoramas without it, so I hope it is retained.

I can't speak to the 2200 but I have used the original 1200 I bought
for over 9 years now. It has never seen OEM inks. I've used all manner
of third party inks in it including both color and black. These
include G4s, Mis Archival and Pro, Mis original Quads, Pantone color
inks, Mis VM and VMS quads, Mis DD black, Eboni, Mis UT series
quad/hextone inks and last but not least, all sorts of self mixed
dilutions and combinations of these as experimental ink sets. The
machine is not even close to being ready for the garbage heap. As I
write this it is turning out a series of experimental quad/sepia split
tone prints that are akin to lith prints. I have a 3000 and a 7000
that have had similar use as well.

As in all of what we do with this technology, it has a good deal more
to do with thoughtful application and care than it does with risk.

Duane

Hi Duane,

I choose to ignore the trend and went with a problem 3000 from eBait. It now works fine and looks to be robust, but it's no Spinwriter.

I really enjoy having a platen knob, again. KISS principle.

No dearer if you take the extra ink into account. BUT, it all depends on how
much printing you do. If you are going to empty all the 3800 carts within
the stated 6months, then its a clear winner. But if you only do small
amounts of printing, then the R2400 is the best bet.

Bob . .

By the six months . . do you mean the period during which the ink is
supposed to be used?

(And you were right about the rubbish . . apologies to all!)

Re: Dilemma - 2200 or new printer?

2008-01-10 by Lawrence Beals

Thanks everyone for all the input on the 2200 and 2400. Based on the
very well reasoned emails I got (almost an anomaly on the internet
anymore) I am going to be keeping the 2200 and delving into the art of
learning how to print effectively with it. I am sure I will have more
questions in the future and I am equally sure that this list will be
able to answer them as effectively. But I also see getting a 2400 or
its replacement in the future as soon as I can free up some space.
Living in a historic home has its disadvantages at times.

thanks again

3rd party ink experiences with 1200 and other antique ink machines
(1280/1270) are irrelevant to 2200 and more modern pigment machines.

2200 requires much finer particle size and 3rd party inks commonly
clog it...some users have good luck, some don't...probably has to do
with erratic quality of all 3rd party inks (regularly reported with
MIS and Piezo and various cheapo Vs Epson pigments).

"probably has to do

Do you have any data to back that up? I would suspect individual working
environments before I'd suspect quality control. The variables in work
environment are hugh; air quality including particles and humidity, heat,
paper types used, frequency in printing, skill level of operator, lack of
knowledge of chemicals and how they react to one another.

Eric, this Forum contains excellent hard data...it's right here if you
really want it.

Yes, 3rd party inks work beautifully for some, terribly for others..as
you yourself have just admitted (blaming the operator).

Happily for you, you never have clog problems with your third party
inks, and happily for me I've only had to do a cleaning routine twice
in 5 years with my OEM 2200 (whereas its MIS-using twin died).

When I replace my 2200 I'll skip 2400 (less reliable) and go to its
successor or to 3800, or to the next generation of Canon, and I'll use
OEM....

...because my time's worth a lot more than ink savings.

Someone else's mileage may vary YMMV

I have not been on this list for more than two + years, but I have never
seen hard data where someone has gone in and inspected, measured, or done
any qualitative analysis of ANY ink here let alone third party ink. All
other observations are merely supposition; good or bad. I placed limited
blame on the operator, but rather pointed out that there are many factors
that could and do contribute to workflow problems that do include clogs.

It is more than semantics. I don't need to spend a ton of time on this
looking up erratic ink quality. There have been times when carts have gotten
mis labeled for sure but is that an ink quality issue? Or a distribution
problem? Or is that the same thing?

I think every one should seriously consider their workflow when it comes to
choosing a printer and ink combination. This industry is really still in its
infancy and we are all going to change a lot of diapers.

I would simply repeat the last paragraph of my post. It has more to do
with careful thought and application. As regards OEM, they were Not
the leaders in the B&W field with inks but rather the followers. Were
it not for this group, and in particular the few who dared that
application (I do not count myself among them.), the probabilities you
speak of are that you and all would still be using the old OEM ink
technology.
There is nothing exclusive about particle size and milling to match
machine requirements. The successful third party suppliers have paid
attention to those needs.

As for time and interest, it's a perfectly legitimate concern for
many. Not everyone, not even most, are willing or able to expend the
effort needed to experiment successfully. For those, waiting for OEMs
to bring things to market are an answer. Over most of the history of
photography there have been those who did not even do their own
processing and printing let alone experiment. There is nothing wrong
with that dichotomy but what is irrelevant are prejudicial statements
arguing against the other path. To be blunt, those who look for cheap
plug-n-play or to be on the leading edge, with no effort are
inevitably going to pay the price with disappointment of one sort or
another.

Duane
