No Ultratone cartridges for my new R280 at Inksupply. How much trouble am I in?

No Ultratone cartridges for my new R280 at Inksupply. How much trouble am I in?

2008-01-11 by dnclodfelter

I am a wet darkroom veteran trying to get my feet wet in digital B & W
printing. I am not interested in prints bigger than 8x10 so the
higher end printers (R2400, HP 9180, Canon 9500, etc.) seem like
overkill for my amateur efforts. They are too big and too expensive.

After reading Paul Roark and others about the marvels of B & W
printing with cheap Epson printers I naively ordered a new R280 from
Epson and a set of Warm tone MIS UT-RC Ultratone cartridges from
Inksupply on the same day. At that time I had never heard of the Epson
law suit. The printer is in the corner as yet uninstalled. I got
back an email from Inksupply that there would be a temporary delay in
filling my order. I called their customer support phone number but
got voicemail. After an email back I received the following message:

"Unfortunately it seems as though these cartridges are effected by the
Epson suit with our supplier for the empty cartridges. Currently we
are attempting to receive a new batch of the R260 cartridges but it
may be another two weeks before they are received. We are sorry for
any inconvenience and thank you for your patience. Please contact us
if we may assist you in any way."

Does this mean that Epson cartridges will be scarce forever?
Even if they send these cartridges can I get more in the future?
Can they be refilled by me or by Inksupply?
Are there other viable alternatives that I do not know or understand?
Should I try to return the printer to Epson? Please help. Dave

Hello Dave;

Probaly the best work-around right now is to get a CIS (continuous
ink system) from one of several sources. They use an auto-reset
chip, so you don't need a resetter (which isn't available anyway)
and you don't have to mess with refilling the carts. Others will
jump in with their own favorite brands, but I'm currently using some
Chinese import systems I found on eBay, with MIS bulk inks. It's
been heaven, let me tell you-no clogs due to iterrupted ink flow in
the heads, no re-filling, nada. Just print, and occasioanlly top off
the ink tanks. Email me off-list if you'd like a link.

PS-the usual disclaimer: I'm just a satisfied user.

Thanks for your reply Steve. I read somewhere that CIS was not a good
option for a low volume printer which I will be. Is this true? I
guess I need to be convinced that this a good action for me. Can I do
 black only printing? How?

Define 'low volume' Dave. If you print a few prints every 2-3 days
it'll probably be enough to keep the ink moving through and keep the
head clean. Aside from the head issues, older generations of ink
built up sludge in the tubes and eventually clogged them, requiring
replacement.I haven't heard of any complaints to that effect for what
we're using now, though I'm sure someone will contradict me soon
enough.

These newer printers won't do BO with the Epson driver. You will need
QuadtoneRip or another RIP to do it with any of the Claria printers.
The previous generation-R200,R220, R240 and R300, R320, R340 Had a
black only option, there is a chip re-setter available, and you can
probably put together a set of refillable carts. I just checked eBay,
and there are still a few NEW ones being offered-don't buy a used one.

I am also concerned.
I just bought a R280 from Epson.
This is a hobby for me.
The printer cost $60. The set of inks for a CIS cost $300. Plus the CIS
setup.
This is not an option for me.
Bummer.

Please let me know if and when there is new information from MIS.

You might want to ask InkRepublic if they sell the R280 CIS kit
without their ink:

<http://www.inkrepublic.com/R260.asp>

I use this setup in my 1280 with MIS UT-2 ink and it's really quite
good & low cost.

My cartridges also shipped today. Now I'll have to make some prints.
What I do not understand is how MIS can ship these carts in view of the
Epson lawsuit result. I hope that they will continue to be available
but that is a bridge to cross in the future.
