Lightroom and PSCS3

Lightroom and PSCS3

2008-03-02 by Stephen Kobrin

I current use both Lightroom an PSCS2. I really like the ability to
organize photographs in lightroom and use some of the "raw"
adjustments on JPEGs ( I understand their effect is limited.)
However, I find going between the two a bit clumsy and would prefer
one program. Question: how much of Lightroom's capabilities have been
incorporated in CS3? If Bridge in CS2 has been replace by a
Lightroom-like organizer in CS3, I would upgrade in a minute.

Bridge in CS3 is nothing like Lightroom. The Camera Raw of CS3 is almost
identical to Lightroom although there are a few subtle differences.

Thanks Paul,

It turns out that I have to upgrade to CS3 anyway as processing raw
files from my new Canon G9 requires Camera Raw 4.2 which is not
backward compatible with CS2. While I usually feel upgrades are
worth the money, at times I still feel like I rent PS.

You can use the free Adobe DNG converter to convert the raw files to
DNG and then CS2 can open them in its version of camera raw. All said
and done CS3 is a worthwhile upgrade.

Converting everything over to DNGs is the best thing to do anyway,
very compatible with many applications, even simple programs like
iPhoto 8. The Leica M8 digital has picked DNG for its RAW format,
hopefully all camera manufactures will follow. Most DNG files are
more compact (compressed file size) too.

Mark et la, Before you start bang'n the drum for DNG as a universal solution
to RAW conversion, can you or anyone tells us what is getting trashed in the
conversion? Or for that matter what is getting processed by the ACR? It
seems to me that too many people are accepting the Adobe line of processing
with out question. If camera manufactures are indeed selling their own RAW
converter, is it just to get a piece of the processing pie or do you think
they might have spent some time to develop techniques via software that
produce better files? And if not them DXO, Bibble, etc are also available to
process RAW.

I have not run the great pixel chase but I guess by other industry goings on
that there is something to be said by looking at alternatives to Adobe ACR
or DNG. If in the case of Lecia, DNG is the RAW format, there are no hidden
"what ifs", they have already gone that route with their initial processing.

Steve,
I have the Canon G9 too and not not realize this about Adobe CS2. I
have just purchased a new computer with Vista and have just installed
all my software on it.
I am just an amateur, but to delay the CS3 upgrade (at least for now)
I just downloaded Canon's Zoom Browser, raw converter upgrades and
will use their software for processing my raws.
I wonder though where Canon put my raw converter since I have a Sony
A100 too. I have not opened up any of these raws in CS2 yet. I wonder
if there will be a raw converter conflict ...

Anyway, thanks for the info.

Karen,

I took the advice of several people on the list and downloaded Adobe's
free DNG converter. Once I converted the G9 raw files to DNG, the
older version of Adobe Raw (with CS2) opened them without a problem.
What I do not know is if CS2 works with Vista.

Re: Lightroom and PSCS3

You may get a warning from Vista about compatibility with CS2. I think
this is leftover from pre-release days where there were issues with
Vista's desktop windows manager (the thing that gives you transparent
frames, etc.) You can tell Vista to not warn you about this again.

I have not seen any actual problems running 9.0.2 (the last update)
under Vista 32 or 64 bit. I ran that way for more than a year before
upgrading to CS3.

Re: Lightroom and PSCS3

I'm going to post this here just for those interested in this specific
topic.
I'm lifting this info from someone uncredited.. just to help protect
their inside position...

Quote-

The fact of the matter is, the two applications use two different print
engines. Adobe is working on getting the two in sync but they are
different
and this isn't a CMM or BPC issue.

Plus, one or the other (I suspect Photoshop) has a rare bug which no one
seems to know what causes it to show up or how to fix it. That is,
there are
enough users reporting differences between the two applications that
its not
user error but not enough to convince me that its anything but a rare
occurrence. If you read the Adobe UtoU forums (or other's), some
people are
reporting differences, some dramatic and based on their conversations,
they
are pressing the right buttons, picking the right options. Again, why this
shows up is a mystery to just about everyone including Adobe. What's
odd is,
if you try to print the same document in say InDesign, it prints
differently
than Photoshop, making me think there's something lurking in the Photoshop
code that needs a few fixes.

end quote.

Perhaps this helps some users to know. Worth keeping an eye out for if
you use both apps.

You might look at downloading the Canon DPP (Digital Photo Professional)
its is great too. If you

Should be able to find it at this link...look at drivers for a 5d and you
will find it.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
