Can you cut roll paper w/ a chop saw?

Can you cut roll paper w/ a chop saw?

2008-12-28 by steveabrink

I got a free roll of 100'L 44" W rag paper but my Canon IPF6100 has a
24" W carriage. Does anyone know if I can use a finetooth 200T 12 in.
carbide blade to cut the roll to 24"W, and a custom 19&7/8" (because of
blade kerf) or 17" W?

I'm thinking it would burn the paper edge because tight paper would be
more dense than (porous) wood, so I would have to then cut ~ 1/8" off
the burnt edge after the print is made for a 23&7/8"W print.

Anyone ever try this?

Thanks in advance!

Steve, The thing to look out for is paper dust. So wrap up the roll where
you are not going to cut it well to help mitigate the amount of paper dust
that gets around. If you have a compressor, I'd blow it off before you bring
it around your printer. You should have no problem with a 200T thin kerf
blade.

Hi. So far I have never burnt the paper at all. It must be held firmly and square to the blade of course. Your blade appears to be ideal.

I find a gentle postiive feed of the blade without hesitation works best. If you go too slowly and really take a long time in cutting the roll you just may run into a burning issue.

If the blade is not new and has been used quite a bit for cutting resinous woods you might have burninging issues. That is why most people keep a blade just for cutting paper rolls.

A blade used to cut MDF moldings, etc. will also have some of the crispness taken off the cutting edges even though the blade looks clean.
