PremierArt Alise Fine Art Paper

2009-03-08 by Richard Smallfield

Hi,
some samples of the new Generations Alise just arrived.

First impressions: the surface is very close to Photo Rag - a bit smoother than Entrada.

The colour of the Museum (Natural) is close to Entrada Natural - but very marginally whiter, I think. The Photo (Bright) version is marginally less bright than Entrada Bright.

I've not done a test print yet, but have high expectations.

Richard

I'm seriously thinking of making their Natural my main paper -- with the Eboni/Carbon-6 inkset. I'm currently using the Premier Art Smooth BW as my standard, but I really want to get away from OBAs. The Generations Alise Natural prints with a 3 unit Lab B rise, which is fairly modest. See http://
www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Eb6-PA-GenAliseNat-ExeterMat-Tones.jpg
to see the print tones.

Since my mat board Lab B is close to the maximum the new paper hits, the prints look fairly neutral. So, I'm starting to think I'll be able to combine non-OBA paper, high dmax, and 100% carbon -- which is a very appealing combination to me.

While the Eboni-6 settling is a bit of a nuisance, but truth is my rolling the end of the printer back and forth routinely seems to take care of the problem, and that is easy to do. Super cheap, 100% carbon, and no clogs makes it rather easy to live with. Now with super blacks, it's looking even better.

Hi,
I'm in New Zealand, so my supplier won't be the same as yours unless you also live here. But it was Print Dot Com.

I think an increase of 0.1 density unit in the dmax is a significant advance. The Smooth BW is a very good paper, but that dmax difference is noticeable in some images.

Actually, what I think would be a more significant advance would be to have non-fading OBAs.

InkJet Art lists the Alise paper:

What is the D-Max on this paper? I have been trying out Epson
UltraSmooth (first time matte paper user) because of no OBAs but the
blacks just seem a bit weak.

Which printer/inkset did you use?
I print on USFA with piezo inks on an Epson 7600 and with a Canon iPF6100,
both for B/W images with excellent blacks.

Using it with the Colorburst RIP on a 7900. Maybe I am expecting too
much coming from glossy papers? I knew the blacks would be weaker
than glossy but I thought they would be a bit better than they are.

With Eboni MK I'm getting 1.74 on Generations Alise -- BW and Natural. UltraSmooth barely breaks 1.6. That is a major difference. Your inkset/MK and profile may make a difference. The glossy blacks are still way better in perfect lighting, but in my (typical?) display conditions the reflections wipe out the glossy advantage and a 1.7+ matte wins.

USFA is a matte paper for M K ink. If you print on it with PK ink, it is
terrible. It is otherwise a warm tone, beautiful (IMHO), smooth finish paper
similar to Crane Portfolio Rag, which has more texture and wt.

Thanks for the replies folks. I do you MK ink so I guess it's just a
case of getting used to the differences. Looking forward to the new
Epson Hot Press when it comes out in the hopes the blacks will be a
little deeper.

Guess the thing that really makes the differences stand out is when
you view the prints under brighter light levels. Under average light
the differences aren't as noticeable unless you really look for them.

I recently switched my R2400 over to Eboni and matte papers, and whether
I like the change depends a lot on the image. Images with very high
local contrast look great, but a number of my "softer" images look
washed out compared to when they are printed on a good PK paper. I don't
know to what extent this problem can be ameliorated by editing.
