Edwal LFN & Photo-Flo 200 for UK and EU users - call for interest

2010-01-28 by sMITH

Hi,

There is a lot of interest in Paul Roark's home brew inks, but for those of us in UK/EU a couple of the base ingredients are impossible to obtain locally.

So a few of us are looking to club together and get a bulk order of Edwal LFN and Photo-Flo 200 from B&H in New York. Shipped either to UK or NL depending on the interest and then posted onto to us individually.

The potential postage /duty savings are huge - 16oz of Photoflo + 4 oz of Edwal LFN costs $30. Shipping+duty for just 1 of each is $100. Shipping and duty for 6 of each is only $180 - that's $30 for 1 of each vs $100 for shipping and duty. Plus there would be some local postage, maybe £4 in UK and £8 to /from EU.

Ok so we plan to put in an order to B&H on Monday next week. Delivery would be about one week. If you are interested in taking part in a joint purchase of Edwal LFN and/ or Photoflo 200 then please email me OFF list asap - drmrking at gmail.com - with your requirements or questions.

One bottle of each will cost approx £45 total including local UK shipping, paypal fees etc. If there is less than 6 people interested that might go up to £55. There would be maybe another £5 shipping cost to EU from UK. Prices for one of the other chemicals will depend on the level of interest. So let me know asap if you are interested.

On another related topic, does anyone know where we can get wide necked (2+cm) 125ml (approx) plastic bottles in UK? All I can find are narrow necked. Seems a shame to ship them from MIS.

Mike

Notes:

Note 16oz Photoflo 200 (@ 10%)will make 4.7 litres of base, Edwal LFN 4oz (@ 1%)will make 11.8 litres of base (life time supply for me :)

Note that Photoflo 600 is all that's available in EU and that is different (though potentially substitutable for Photoflo 200 that Paul uses). I've used it without any problems, but some people might prefer to get the Photoflo 200 from US.

I/we are not looking to make any profit out of this, its purely to get us all some cheaper chemicals.

The MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) are a very good way to find out what things are. Here is the guts of the Kodak Photo Flo 200 MSDS:

http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/PF200.jpg

Photo Flo 200 is 60 - 70% water, 25 - 30% propylene glycol, and 5 - 10% a proprietary surfactant.

Some of the nice things about Photo Flo 200 are that it's readily available and has been used with imaging substrates for years. The glycol is a significant part of the ink base, and PF200 is a convenient way to get it.

Check www.emergo.nl and www.emergolab.nl for supplies like that.
Chemicals as well.
You have to make an account.
There's a printed catalog too.
100 and 150 ML LPDE is more likely, often caps have to be ordered
separately.

Hi Paul, back in the days of B&W, I used either Triton X-100 or Igepal 630, never had a problem - I left out the propylene glycol. I usually prepare an aliquot if the Triton and just used a several drops per liter, knowing the ration of my preparation.

I'm sure there are.

When I started this I checked a couple of the wetting agents mentioned in the article, and availability in the age of the disappearing darkroom was (and will be) a major issue.

The author of that article notes: " ... this author prefers a blend of secondary alcohol ethoxylates ..."

I agree. That is why I've moved to a blend of Photo Flo, Edwal LFN and Tergitol 15-S-7.

That was probably a good thing to do when used with film. I've suspected the "scum" that some report with Photo Flo in film is from the propylene glycol.

In the ink setting, however, glycol turns out to be a good co-solvent. Note among other things that Epson cleaning solution is about 45% glycol. It's also said to aid in paper penetration.

The glycol may have been good with paper, as an anti curl..... kept the moisture & flexibility
