Like most people, I'm searching. I'm searching for that thicker version of EAM (and no watermarks, of course)...a paper not as flimsy and cold as Legion Photo Matte...a paper that doesn't cost more than a buck a sheet (letter size)...a paper where the blacks don't scuff so easily...a paper somewhat like Eclipse Soft White, but the weight somewhere between 190 and 300 ( I have to raise my print head to the plus position to print with Eclipse 300, and, even after aligning the heads, my usual micro banding turns into macro banding)...I haven't found that paper, yet. Having been on the Hawk Mountain site yesterday, browsing through their alternatives, I came across Goshawk - nice price, nice weight - does anybody have any experience with this paper? I have a few sheets of their Peregrine which printed well with Lyson quads, but not so well with MIS FS (bad blacks). Anyway, I'll see if I can order some samples on Monday and eventually report back my findings. Thom

I haven't used Goshawk, but on another list Hawk Mountain reps were saying that Goshawk is really only good for printing bright colors, and that for BW or subtle color work it isn't a good choice. I don't really understand why this would be, but I figure they probably wouldn't pass up a chance to sell us paper so there's probably some truth to it. Might be worth giving them a call and asking about it. --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@y..., Thom McGraw <thom@t...> wrote:

Sounds like a bad printhead to me. I have no problem printing on this paper with any of my desktop prints (2 1160's and 2 1270's). I've never seen a microband. Are you using a loupe to do the head alignment? I use 300+gm fine art papers all the time even with the piezo driver (which is more sensitive than the Epson driver) and never have a problem. Robert

Goshawk is being discontinued...besides it has poor blacks. Nature jet might also be worth a look. Its 100% rag but is loaded up with brighteners. It is cheap and has a similar hand to Goshawk (and poor blacks). What workflow are you using...piezo, epson or imageprint driver? For the epson driver there is nothing that beats the Eclipse Satine Soft White for price and performance for a 100% rag and OB free paper...its two sided (one smooth side and one medium rough side) as well. Unfortunately Cone doesn't have a piezo profile that works for this paper. For maximal dmax you have to go Hahnmuhle and their papers are expensive. If you buy in quantity you may be able to get them under $1/sheet...but their surfaces are delicate compared to Eclipse in my experience. Robert

Doesn't surprise me given my flat prints with Peregrine. Thank you. Thom --- charles_bandes <byronbulb@...> wrote:

I agree, I think it's a great paper. After reading your reply, I gave the 300 weight another go and it printed fine. Must have had a piece of lint or something in the heads. But, alas, I still have that darned microbanding. At an arm's lenght I can't notice it, so I don't let it bother me too much. That is until I put my reading glassed on. Thank you, Thom
