controlling SD-1 with a VFXSD

controlling SD-1 with a VFXSD

2005-01-30 by Sandy Lane

Hi Ensoniq Fans!
I want to trigger a drum sequence in my SD-1 from my VFXSD. ( I use my VFXSD to control all my keyboards because it has the sequencer expander installed. ) What settings do I need to make in the SD-1? In the VFXSD manual I am looking at Section 13
---- Sequencer Applications pages 13 - 5 & 13 - 6 Using the VFXSD with an External MIDI Sequencer
On page 13 - 6: it says: "When using the VFXSD as both the controller and one of several sound generators with an external sequencer: * Set up the MIDI connections as shown in the diagram on the previous page. ( I did that )
* Set the external sequencer to echo incoming MIDI data at its output. ( So how do I set the SD-1 to " echo incoming MIDI data at its output" ? I consulted the SD-1 manual but it is word for word the same as the VFXSD manual. ) Am I even looking at the correct set of instructions? Have any of you tried to do this? I sure do want to use this drum pattern. Hope someone can tell me how to proceed.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

You will need to Merge the SD-1's MIDI OUT and MIDI Thru together. I
do this with mine, also.

I use a midisolutions.com MIDI Merger (I think that's the name).

The MIDI input data does appear at the MIDI Thru, but not at the MIDI
Out. The internal sequencer data does appear at the MIDI Out but not
at the Thru. When you merge them together, everything is present on
the MIDI output of the MIDI Merger.

Paul, thanks so much for the info. I'll try to get one of those MIDI mergers.

The MIDI input data does appear at the MIDI Thru, but not at the MIDI

You're welcome. They don't need external power, either.
Let me know how it works out.

I'm not sure if this question is on topic but I have my SD-1 midi out
connected to my sampler
on my laptop. I also have a need to connect my SD-1 midi out to my DX7II.
I don't know much
about midi but I tried to connect the DX7II to the midi thru of my SD-1 and
that doesn't work
(probably for an obvious reason). Can anyone tell me how I can connect my
laptop and my DX7II
to recieve commands from my SD-1? Thanks in advance and my apologies if
this is off topic.

need a midi "splitter"
small box with one midi in and 2 midi outs

unless the DX7II has a midi thru

3 options:
1) sd1 (midi out) -> (midi in) DX7II (midi through) -> (midi in) laptop
2) sd1 (midi out) -> (midi in ) laptop (midi out) -> DX7II
check if your sampler SW can be configured to put midi signals THROUGH
3) sd1 (midi out) -> (midi in) splitter (midi out1) -> DX7II
; ; (midi out2) -> laptop
as TIm mentioned

I think you're looking at the wrong part of the VFXsd manual.
You're trying to control a sequence in your SD-1 from your VFXsd.
How do you want to control it, though? Do you want the tempo
synched so that it'll play along with a sequence from your VFXsd?
If that's the case, you just need to look for something that talks
about "external clock" synchronization for the SD-1. It should be
somewhere in the sequencer or system section of the OS, I think.
Midi out on the VFXsd to Midi in on the SD-1, of course. After this
is set, you should be able to just press play on the VFXsd and the
SD-1's sequencer should start right up.

If I've misunderstood your question, I apologize. Good luck and I
hope that I've been helpful!  ; )

God Bless,

Ben

Ben,
You are right. I was looking in the wrong place. I have the SD-1 clock set to external and the VFXSD can trigger the drum sequence. Thank you!!! Don't know what I would do without this group. Every time I've had a problem, one of you has come up with the solution. I really appreciate you all. Thank you!!!!
