VFX repairs?

VFX repairs?

2009-01-12 by Jon Carroll

I live in L.A. and my VFX needs battery replacement and the keys cleaned.
Anywhere local that's still in business?

I've heard several recommendations for thesoniq.com.

Anyone can do the battery replacement. It's really really simple.

it.

If you can fix a jack plug, you can change the battery. If a repair
place doesn't want to touch it, I wouldn't trust them with anything
else.

Up to you. I tend not to use battery holders, because although they do
make subsequent replacement easier the batteries can fall out when the
instrument is being transported! All very well if you've got a VFX-SD
or SD1, where you just reload from your backup disks (hey, you *did*
make backup disks, didn't you?)...

I have changed my battery twice, the first time I changed it to a
socket so I could just swap out the battery when it went bad.
Alas, I had to send it in for something, it is so long ago I don't
remember what, they swapped out the mb so I did not have the socket
anymore....
So I had to redo it when the battery died again.
If you can find an old computer mother board with a battery socket to
remove, it works great.
It was not very hard to do.
however it did take a little while.
If i recall correctly.
Back up your presets... before, although if your battery is dead you
probably already lost them.

Unpluged ... obviously...

Keep track of your parts.

>allen wrench on the hinge top, I forget the size, I have the correct
one taped to the vfx.
>remove keyboard. As, long as you are there you might as well clean
the keyboard pad contacts and landing zone for the pads. I just used
some alcohol and qtips.
(I don't remember this, but I think you need to remove the springs and
totally disassemble the keyboard (you end up with a pile of keys, pay
attention on reassembly...)to clean the contacts... such vague
memories...)
>remove board with battery on it.
I think this has a bunch of plastic stand offs that you have to
squeeze...
turn the board over, pull the old battery after heating up the solder
contacts with a hot soldering iron.
Remove.
Install new bat.
reassmble.
Send the old sysex back to the beast.
Rock out!

If you have the keyboard calibration error you can fix it while you
have it apart.
Check the file section.

There is my 2 cents.
It probably takes an hour (uninterrupted), if you have all your tools
and supplies ready to do it all.
Cheaper than sending it in for sure.

Like the other reply said - if you can solder a plug or a cord you can
do this.

Re: [Ensoniq-VFX-SD] VFX repairs?

2009-01-12 by Rish

If your not sure on your soldering skills then don't attempt it yourself, if you can however take things apart and put them back together... you can save allot of money by removing the MB yourself and taking it your local repair shop for the battery swap. I have heard that the best solder jobs come from the mom and pop TV repair guys, this is due to the fact that all they do is replace board level parts.

what have you heard?

did he mess up your unit?

Re: [Ensoniq-VFX-SD] Re: VFX repairs? what about thesoniq

2009-01-13 by Bob S.

I belong to another group for the DP/4....here is a cut & paste of someone who sent his Ensoniq DP/4 to them earlier last year, you decide:
"I recently bought a DP4+ in immaculate condition for a decent price. I
tested it out and it was fully working no problems. I left it in my
rack for a few weeks before properly integrating into my patch bay.
Then when I turned it on LCD lit up for a second and then everything
went off. I checked the power supply and two fuses had blown. I
replaced the fuses and then it happened again.

I assumed there was a short on one of the boards that should be easy
to fix by an experienced Ensoniq technician so I sent it to the
TheSoniq in california.

I didn't hear anything from the guy for a month until I started to
inquire. Then he told me that the power supply had failed and so had
the analog board so it would cost $265 to replace (not repair). I had
assumed from initial correspondences that he had a flat $70 repair
charge but that the components would not be too much (especially the
cost of replacing components vs. replacing whole boards).
Then he e-mailed me to say the digital board had a short too and also
needs replacing.

So a piece of pro audio gear like the DP4+ had all of it's boards
spontaneously short out??? This is totally unacceptable in my opinion.

Now I am in the position where the total repair costs are going to be
more than the unit is worth if it was working to begin with (i.e. I
may as well just buy a new used one).

Has anyone else had simmilar experiences? Anyone else used the guy at
TheSoniq for repairs?"
