Questions about sounds for the VFX-SD - Newbie to Synths!

Questions about sounds for the VFX-SD - Newbie to Synths!

2010-11-17 by jonpalman

Hello.
I am trying to make songs on the VFX-SD. I have no problem using the sequencer or anything like that (yet - I haven't gone into anything too advanced...), but the only thing that's stopping me make some of these songs (I'm focusing on 80's songs by the way), is how the default sounds on the VFX-SD aren't anything great. They're not bad, but now I really can see why Ensoniq put a floppy drive in this synthesizer...

Anyway, I have been looking at the sounds stored on here, which thankfully there are many. I now want to know a couple of things. The first is can I sample what these sounds are like before putting them onto my synth?

The second is can I transfer these via a floppy disk? I have the right floppy type (the low-density), but I can't see any way to transfer .syx to a floppy. I'm moving so half my stuff is in boxes, including the midi cable for my synth.

The last is can I only use VFX-SD sounds on here, or can I use sounds say for the SD-1? They're all in .syx format.

Thanks,
Jonathan.

Hey I do some 80s and 90s stuff, Depeche, New Order and others.
I don't use the sounds in the SD that much, if i do its mostly pads.
I have several racks connected via midi, I use TG500, M3r, JV1080 and two s1000 samplers.

No way to preview sounds before hand, SYSEX the banks to the VFXSD then save them to disc.

Re: Questions about sounds for the VFX-SD - Newbie to Synths!

Hey.
After doing some quick research (I will do more if I become interested in buying a rack mount), I found a JV1080 at a steal. It seems to be pretty expandable with the orchestra and hip hop packs etc. Expandability is the main thing I want.

So, I now have to ask an important question that came to mind. If I was to treat myself to one of these for Christmas, what functionality of the VFX-SD will I be able to use in my songs? Will I be able to use the sequencer with the rack mount? If so, will I be able to use both the sounds from the JV1080 and the VFX-SD in a song?

Thanks,
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Jonathan.

Re: [Ensoniq-VFX-SD] Questions about sounds for the VFX-SD - Newbie to Synths!

you need a sysex utility program or a sequencer program pc or mac you then have to dump the sound to the synth via midi
then save to disk
its no good sampling the sounds as the vfx is only a rompler
it is impossible to convert to vfx floppy format disk from sysex data or any sysex data to any form of synth or sampler floppy format
you can use sd1 sysex but when you get presets with the extended rom samples in they will be left blank in the vfx-sd

the tg500 is a rompler but also with a sample dump memory to add your own sample waveforms its has double the polyphony of the sy85 but lacks the floppy drive and memory expantion to 8mb
both sound identicle very warm and large sounding great fx its got an yam sp990 in there resonant filters
jv1080 are your staple synths have many sounds in the rompler and can add 4 expansion cards from the s7xxx range of sample cdroms in rom format
m3r is a cut down version of a m1
s1000 is a great 16bit sampler very crunchie but no filter resonance but you can add multipul loops from a sample which can be like transwave synthesis you set loop points and how many times looped then it will play that loop set number then move onto the next loop point
;
the fz1 also have this programming feature
did you know that when emu and ensoniq joined that emu eos samplers had loop modulation added its also in the software version emulatorx2/3
richard i have redon those single cycle waveforms an sampled then at a higher frequency and got rid of the anti aliasing noise give me a shout and ill send you a bank in w01 format
richard you need to get a sy85 with your tg500 as they make a great pair especialy when it comes to dumping sysex to the tg500

Hey.
Please can you expand on your answer? What exactly do these racks do? I persume they're connected to the synthesizer, not a computer? Also, whats the difference between a rack and a sampler?

Sorry for asking stupid questions.

Re: Questions about sounds for the VFX-SD - Newbie to Synths!

2010-11-17 by jonpalman

I would probably go for the JV 1080, particularly because of the exceptional price I've seen one at. Checking the specs out, it does seem pretty amazing actually, and I like the sound of it from YouTube as well as the fact it has all the expansion cards.

It's really bugging me to know, can I use it with the sequencer of the VFX-SD? Also, can I use some of the sounds from the VFX-SD in my sequences (I suppose I can by using the track button on the VFX-SD).

Thanks,
Jonathan.

Re: Questions about sounds for the VFX-SD - Newbie to Synths!

2010-11-17 by jonpalman

I found the answer out myself. This quote from Wikipedia says 'The sequencer also allows for external MIDI input recording from other instruments. This can be done either one track (MIDI channel) at a time or in multi mode with several tracks (MIDI channels) being recorded at once. This makes it easy to also record multi channel sequences from other MIDI-instruments in to the VFX-SD.'

After going through some of the options on the synthesizer, I can clarify that it can record from a midi source, like the JV-1080.

Thanks for all of your help.
Jonathan.

yes you can add midi tracks to the vfx sequencer for external midi machines it tells you in the manual how to set it up

Re: Questions about sounds for the VFX-SD - Newbie to Synths!

2010-11-17 by az_spunky

Here's a shortcut for you, and a couple of answers to your original questions:

- Only the ROM and CRT sounds banks are permanent. You can write over custom sounds on the INT bank. So, you could start with a ROM sound, tweak it, then save it to the INT bank.

- You can save and load INT sounds to/from the floppy disk.

- You will probably use Sequencer mode to assemble a collection of 12 sounds (a.k.a. Tracks) for each song. When you load Sequencer files from floppy, it will load the ROM, CRT and INT sounds.

- In Sequencer mode, you can assign any Track to an external synth with the MIDI button in the Performance section. There are three parameters there - STAT lets you choose LOCAL (VFX-SD), MIDI (your JV1080 or whatever). I don't use EXT, but it's very similar to MIDI mode.

- No, you can't preview sounds. They won't play until they are loaded.

- You cannot add samples to the VFX-SD. The VFX-SD bases all sounds) on samples stored in its ROM. You can layer up to 6 "voices" in a sound (a.k.a Program), each of which can use a different wave (so there are up to 6 waves loaded in a given Program). Hit the Select Voice button and this will become pretty clear. Voices that have parentheses around them are muted...

- You can scroll through the various samples built in to the VFX-SD ROM by selecting a voice, then hitting the Wave button.

- Most of the SD-1 stuff should work with your VFX-SD. Not everything, but most...

Hope this helps!

Re: [Ensoniq-VFX-SD] Re: Questions about sounds for the VFX-SD - Newbie to Synths!

2010-11-17 by Rish

Well I have been trying to stick to the racks, I have way to many keyboards. I use the Akai s1000 samplers because they are the only samplers I have found that can AUTO load samples via midi cues from the SD1. This was done by swapping the IDE floppy drive with a internal zip 100 SCSI drive. I NEVER have to load samples agian live, plus nothing sounds as good as the S1000.

I have even created backing vocal choruses on my DAW and flown them to the s1000 and used the SD1 sequencer to play them in.

I maybe in the stone ages still as I have yet to use s computer for sequencing, I will say that I bet my old school setup sounds better than any soft synth.

If I did get into a software sequencer I think I would still keep my racks and pull my sounds from them. Anyone here have any thoughts on what the best software sequencer is? Anyone ever find anything that they think works as easy/well as a VFXSD?

never used the built in sequencer of my sd1, anyway I use my quasimidi sirius and raven sequencers. patter sequencers with song mode, real time and step sequencing, arpeggiator that is recordable in the sequencer. that's a lot better than the vfx/sd1 sequencers, no question.

Re: Questions about sounds for the VFX-SD - Newbie to Synths!

Well I think it's a brilliant sequencer that's very large so you can have complex songs. I also think that making a song with the step function couldn't be any easier. I've never used a synthesizer before in my life and this is my first, and so far I've only had to touch the manual a couple of times.

I did pay £150 for it on eBay only a few months ago so I'm determined to use as many of it's features as possible. The sequencer on this is amazing and thats why I bought it rather than another. They're also very rare (only seen one since I bought mine and that was double the price), so i didn't want to miss out on the chance of getting one. It was well worth pushing my budget for anyway.

...that's redundant since the motivator can be recorded for any track, so you can also have 8 arpeggiated tracks per pattern... the only advantages of owning a cyber 6 are odd measures like 7/8 5/4 etc. and the fact that the 2nd motivator can be used to modify some parameters like filter cutoff... but this can also be done with the raven: in the modulation matrix you can set velocity to cutoff modulation and with the step sequencer you can edit the velocity of each note (or, if you are a virtuoso, you can do it also with realtime recording)... well another advantage may be that as master-keyboard, it is splittable in 8 zones, but I don't think it is THAT useful... I'd have a raven over a cyber6 any day.

forgot to mention tha I have the Raven MAX... the non-Max version hasn't got this facility, and you can not record the arpeggiator...

My 2 cents.

The VFX and VFX-SD (along with their successors the SQR, SQ1, SQ2, TS12, etc) are very powerful and programmable synthesizers. What I've read on forums and listserves these days leads me to believe that most current VFX et al users purchased their unit because it was available at such a cheap price and intend to use it for 80's sounds. My recommendation is to learn how to program your own patches, Ensoniq synthesizers offer flexibility uncommon to most synthesizers. You will be handsomely rewarded for doing so :).

Re: [Ensoniq-VFX-SD] Re: Questions about sounds for the VFX-SD - Newbie to Synths!

I had an SD 1...but I believer the vfx SD was the same. Yes, you can sequence on the VFX and send the midi signal to the outboard sound module. Then mix them all together at the mixer/amp. On the SD 1 a track could be (and I don't remember the actual jargon) internal sounds, cart sounds, or midi. the "midi" or external sent the midi info to the sound module.

My brother in law did the same with his old ensoniq 8 channel sampler, can't recall it's name either...getting old... but I'm very sure the VFX will function as the "computer" to play external sound sources.

Thanks,

Jonathan.
