CC-1 CRYSTAL CORE

2006-11-30 by big bloke

Who ever was at the launch of fairlights new multi-media engine, the CC-
1 Crystal core. What an amazing revelation into what the future holds.
Myself. I'm getting rid of everything I own, to posess this new and
wonderful system. DSP is really gonna become a thing of the past. At
last the boys at fairlight will conquer the digi-design, that is slow
tools, strangle hold on what is industry standard.
The guys did good. AMAZING!

I'm very intrigued with this revolutionary piece of kit... I must start saving now!

I would say its far to early to say that CC-1 is better than Pro Tools HD because its too new and has not been proven.
A good example is NIs KORE was released to much fanfare and the thing was a Native Instruments Disaster (never worked properly and still doesnt)

There is a good "white paper" on the CC-1 available from the Fairlight website.

Is this CC-1 a DAW base system or an exceedingly fantastic sound card with lots of DSP, i.e. could it potentially replace my Delta 1010, outboard, UAD, etc and work with SX? Sorry for the ignorance, although it sounds intriguing, I'm not 100% sure what this is. I checked out Fairlight's website, but there's very little information...

It is "an exceedingly fantastic sound card", which does not use DSPs but
provides:

230 Channel paths; each with eight bands of EQ, 3 stage dynamics processing,
12 Auxiliary sends and up-to 72 user definable mix busses: all from a single
PCIe card.

There is considerable detail available on the Fairlight.au website, look
under Hot Links on the homepage and click on Download CC-1 White Paper.

15 years total man hours, put into this new revelation and is it
just pure coincidence that digi design are advertising for FFTP
designers? MMMMMMM!!!!! getting just a little nervy I'd say.The CC-1
also comes in, with the the sat console, at £19,000, with the
equivalent SLOW TOOLS system, a whopping £24,000.You should go and
check it out. I did and spent a whole evening bombarding the
engineer, who just happened to have worked for slow tools for the
past 6 years.

I was the original poster that made the statement that it is far to early to say that the CC-1 is better than Pro Tools HD
I love the Fairlight but no matter how good the hardware is --what about the software--Pro Tools 7 is great software and it will take a lot to beat it and get people to switch--same with Apple Logic
I think the company that could knock Pro Tools off the throne is Apple --if they combined Logic and Final Cut Pro into a high end product and teamed up with Apogee for the hardware

Adding to my post--I personally own a Pro Tools HD system
I must say I was extremely disappointed and as were other posters that any posts about the Fairlight CC-1 on the Digidesign User Group
http://duc.digidesign.com/ is removed by the administrator so no one knows what is going on and we wont have a chance to A to B etc

I supose what I'm saying, is that given Slow tools has had the
industry standard tag for quite a while now, It's nice as a punter
to be presented with a great bit of kit that puts presure on that
mantle. I have also owned a Slow tools system, thus the name I have
given it, as well as syn clav and way too many other systems through
my 35 years worth. I too, love fairlight, Still have a cmi as well
as my mfx3+. In my oppinion and it's only an oppinion, the CC-
1 "WILL" make quite an in road on the industry. Not sure if it will
filter through to the public sector, but as a pro? S**t yeah! I will
be placing my order.

One thing the CC1 has got that Pro Tools hasn't is VST Plugins which is more the industry standard

Hi all!
Just to clarify reg the CC1. It only works within the
Fairlight world right?
Or can it also be used as a Logic frontend?

Cheers!

Peter said it all really.
Here's a sheet I ran off.

FAIRLIGHT CC-1 – THE alternative
A step-change for multimedia processing in audio post-production
In October 2006, at the AES show in San Francisco, Fairlight stunned
the professional audio world with the
release of the Crystal Core CC-1 PCIe card, their groundbreaking
application of FPGA technology.
The audio post industry's first use of FPGA technology will pave the
way for future Fairlight systems - more
power, more features, greater creative possibilities and lower
costs. The features offered by a single CC-1
card renders current DSP and Host-based processing systems obsolete
and delivers price/performance ratios
demanded by audio post facilities in today's marketplace.
Hosted on a Windows PC, Fairlight's DREAM II range of products
starts with cost-effective entry-level DAWs
and progresses through to large-scale, large-format surfaces - all
with on-board mix capability, 64 ReWire
channels, assignable VST plug-ins and PyxisTrack – an integrated,
editable video track which plays back SD
or HD files.
ONE FPGA-based CC-1 card provides:
• Up to 230 channels, 72 busses, support for 212 physical IO
• Integrated 192 track disk recorder/editor
• 8 bands of EQ and 3 stages of Dynamics ALL the time on ALL Channels
• Multi-format mixing and monitoring – up to 7.1
• Low latency < 0.5ms
• Concurrent fixed and floating-point bit resolutions
• High resolution audio – 192KHz ready (384KHz to be announced in
the future)
• VocAlign, NoNoise sound design tools for CC-1
• Additional 64 Channel audio bridge to VST plug-ins - Rewire
Connectivity, Waves etc.
• PyxisTrack – integrated HD and SD video playback
• Equivalent processing of EIGHT HD Accel™ cards

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
