fairlight cmi 11x on ebay

Re: [Fairlight-CMI] fairlight cmi 11x on ebay +lightpen question

2007-01-20 by Peter K.

Just wondered what the flatcable and black box is doing there. So I asked.
This is the answer: "Its the MIDIbox , flatcable is the midi connection to the
IIX , orginal retrofitted by Fairlight ."
Now I own a IIx and as far as I know, the "x" has MIDI fitted, on the backside of the mainframe.......
So, this is not a "real" IIx.
There is no pen I think, I asked but got no answer on that.....
However, it's still worth buying it, if you want one, the IIx is pretty rare nowadays.
I read that it's hard to get a lightpen. (Impossible?). Is it not possible to build some?
Cheers,
Peter.

Hello Peter,

To me, the MIDI interface was an option on the CMI IIx. The main
difference
between the Fairlight II and the IIx was the 6809 CPU replacing the
6800.

More infos there :

Hope it helps.

1982 Additive synthesis-tell us about it!

2007-01-20 by M.J.B.

We talk about the samples of the fairlight but I
find discussions about the additive synthesis
side to be much more seldom.

1. Can some one post some examples of the
a-synthesis capablities of the fairlight?
2. Can some one tell us whether the additive
synthesis was 8 bit as well or was it higher then
the samples DAC?
3. Can some one tell us if there is anything out
there today that can closely appromixmate the
A-synthesis sounds? For instance I know that
Yamaha DX7 used 12 bit DAC convertors, so it was
not as warm as the fairlight but is dx7 FM close
to the sound?
4. I've messed around with ADSYNDX, an additive
synthesis program online-it sounds good but not
as warm and big as the fairlight sounds I've
heard using additive. In fact, it seems the
envelopes on the Fairlight Additive stuff were
very fast.

Basically does anyone know of any other 8 bit
digital synths in that era-FM, or anything else?

Micah
