Hi all
Some news on the 2004 meeting.
Sound On Sound are getting interested in running a piece for their
mag at the meeting. The 2004 is starting to hot up with the
conformation of Andy Richards. Andy Richards was and still is a big
Fairlight Fan. He said "I would be delighted to chat about my
Fairlight experiences in the 80's and 90's to the forum." He worked
and produced the following, this was taken from his web site:

READ ON AFTER ANDY'S CV AS THERE IS MORE ABOUT 2004 MEETING!!!!!!

In 1983, I produced an album for an independent record label in
Stoke-on-Trent, UK and it was mixed by Julian Mendelsohn, the house
engineer at Sarm East. Later that year, Trevor Horn, looking for a
new keyboard player / programmer to work with, asked Julian if he
could recommend anyone. Julian suggested that Trevor give me a
ring ......

During that period and on, I worked with Trevor and Stephen Lipson
on the following projects:

FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD 'Relax', 'Two Tribes' & both their albums
PROPAGANDA singles and the album, 'A Secret Wish'
GRACE JONES 'Slave To The Rhythm'
GODLEY & CREME 'Cry'

Over the next few years, as a keyboard player and programmer, I
worked with many producers including Peter Collins, Mutt Lange,
Giorgio Moroder and Arif Mardin and with artists including:

THE PET SHOP BOYS 'It's A Sin', 'Heart', 'Always on My Mind' and the
album, 'Actually'

EMI Records
TRUE BLUE (movie - 1996) Programmed and recorded the underscore for
the British Movie, working with Polish composer Stanisalas Syrewicz

Over the years, I've moved from Keyboard Playing and Programming
into Record Production and along the way have scored jingles both
for Electronic Instruments and Orchestra. During my career, the
artists that I've produced include:

SANJAY KAPIL A gifted World Artist who sings in Hindi & English.
Production of 3 Singles for Elektra Records in the US.
SEBASTIAN THOMAS 2 Singles. Sebastian is an Australian soul singer
signed to Arcade Records in Germany. What a voice!

As you can see Andy has worked with the best and I'm looking forward
to see him at the meeting.

There has been discussions that the meeting sould be just after or
just before the Frankfort Show so that the guys from the USA/
Canada / Australia can attend. This to me sounds great ....tell me
what you all think.

A NEW DATABASE WILL BE PUT ON THE FORUM FOR MEMBERS ATTENDING GREGS
MEETING IF NOT AROUND FRANKFORT.....READ ON

The possibility of a link if not around Frankfort will be costly and
this makes the members fee more costly for the day which I trying to
keep to a minimum. This is what I feel is fair. The UK will hire the
projector (if a member going to the UK venue has one please let me
know)and I'll supply the computer(laptop)if someone has a webcam
please let me know also. Greg and his guests fund the cost of the
connection between the two venues and any aditional costs due to
that connection. I will have to look for a venue with broadband and
ask them for a deal. I feel that it's a good idea of the link up
it's just the cost that concerns me.
I will be asking for all members to help in any way they can. I'll
be doing things in the next couple of months with the forum to fund
raise to keep the cost of the UK venue down. If it goes to plan the
fee for the day will not be very much each I promise. I am starting
3 new databases after conformation of venue, to keep all things
above board:

Donations or purchase fund raise from members attending UK: members
name beside it and total amount.

Donations or purchase fun raise from members other/outside UK:
members name beside it and total amount.

The day's Fee with the members name beside it attending UK.

This will start only when we have the :
Venue
Date
The right amount of members (30 minimum)attending the UK meeting.
PAYMENTS THROUGH PAYPAL OR TRANSFER. UK MEMBERS PAYPAL CHEQUE + PO
ALSO

I will be putting my hand in my pocket to make this day
unforgettable. We (The Forum)are waiting for a few more Special
guests to confirm that they will attend. They will be attending free
and we will be paying for their meal(s)which I feel is fair. Things
that will make up for it is that each member that attends will have
free access to a large library of samples for both Series II and
Series III. Each member will also receive a CD Rom full of their
instruments documentations and some goodies. Some never seen before
since the 80's. A day you will never forget. Non Fairlight users
will get some extra goodies. Any monies left over will be used for
the bar that night. There will be loads of demos, chats, gifts and
FUN.....
HOPEFULLY I WILL BE ADDING SOME MORE SPECIAL GUEST SOON.
Please let me know what your thoughts are.
Best and kind regards
Colin
PS GREG PLEASE COME BACK TO ME WITH YOUR VIEWS. I HOPE THIS IS A
GOOD COMPROMISE.

Colin,

Sounds good!

As mentioned, I am in an area with many hotels and convention facilities
(Niagara). No doubt, most have broadband. I can look into the rough
costs in the next week. Audio is more important than video, I'm sure
you'll agree!

As you said, firm plans don't need to be made until the attendees are
established. We can determine the scale of the venue at that point. I'm
happy to host a small group at my place! A more ambitious alternative is
to place the North American venue in, say, New York City, but that would
be out of my hands.

However, the first thing to find out is how many would be interested in
a North American meeting. With sufficient interest here, I'm sure that
there could be media coverage and high-profile Fairlight owners as well.
(Hey -- I think that EVERYONE who owns a Fairlight is high-profile!)

Due to the ~5 hour time difference, the two meetings would run
independantly for most of the day, overlapping at around 4pm to 8pm UK
time (11am to 3pm our time). Communications costs should be acceptable.

Comments?

Re: Hi all - Global Meeting 2004

2003-10-30 by pstnotpd

Hi guys,

I'm thinking about joining the meeting in London, but I'm not sure I
have some spare time left around that time.

I would be very interested if 3 things came up:
- Checking if the series III hard drive card can actually work on a
IIx (possibly with OS9). Peter mentioned once that it should work as
far as hardware is concerned, but how about the software?
- Any way to transfer files from my IIx to PC apart from floppies
There was some rumour that there is a spare com port lurking
somewhere in the IIx which could be used for this.
- Some hardware thingy to replace the IIx monitor/keyboard with a
standard PC. It should be possible to connect a VGA monitor using a
composite video to VGA converter, but I'm thinking more along the
lines of actually using a PC to control the IIx. I think the series
III already has something like that.

Cheers all.
Patrick

"Point of vue of French user"

2003-10-30 by Jean-Bernard EMOND

Hello everybody , in particular the CMI II and IIx users.

I answer the preceding mail of Patrick.

Indeed, for the extention hard disk of CMI IIx, it is possible to put a Q-077 card (Hardware Disk / Tape DMA Interface), card designed by Fairlight in 1985 !
I have even the system able to manage it (QDOS 5.09) (See the screen capture joinded), but this card implements a obsolete technology !
It is enough to see the problems of management of the hard disks for CMI III in rev 6.x, it is difficult to find hard drives... and with noise, electric consumption, and high heat !
Moreover, according to what I know, there is not large stock. See Peter Wielk (Horizontal Productions) which has some cards (one or two may be).
It's even possible to remake some... but is it really intelligent?
For several years, I have always worked on my rack of ExtOdy extension.
This rack will manage an USB interface and IDE periphericals (Hard-Disk, CD-Rom Drive).
So there will be a possible permanent connection between the rack and a PC or Mac (via the USB) in order to make transfers.
This rack is designed to be interfaced between QFC9 card and the 8" floppy drive. There is no modification of the CMI, it is significant for the users who are collectors too!
As there does not have enough place in the CMI to put the hard disk, the power and additional electronics, these elements will be in a rack in the vicinity!
I have quite advanced in the development of this rack.
I acknowledge that since the first schematic design of 1999-2000, I changed much things at the electronic level.
With final, I chose an interface which should not exceed a cost of 760 Euros.
That can appear expensive for much, but considering I develop all alone, and that it is not my real work, I do not see why I would do it free!
I make these developments over my spare time, and this price will enable me to be equipped to develop other interfaces! Moreover, for me my family is more important than these Fairlight developments.
All like me, you do not seem shocked of knowing that Peter Wielk (Horizontal Productions) request in the 1000 Euros for a memory card of 32 MByte !
This price is justified because this memory card like a prototype (few products are sold), indeed for so small productions the costs are not decraesed as for a series !
best regards,
Jb Emond
JB Emond

This sounds very cool! Would it also be possible to control the CMI
through the USB connection?

I sure don't like poking around the innards of my machine (yep, for
collectors value). And I'm supposed to be electro-technical
engineer. ;-)

I also don't think 760 is to much considering the value of the CMI
itself.

Keep us posted.

Cheers,
Patrick
