Series III for sale

2012-05-22 by toddtoonz

I have listed my Series III on ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fairlight-Series-III-/251068411663?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a74d7ef0f#ht_500wt_1138

I am the original owner (Jan.1987); this instrument was used on sessions with Prince, Michael Jackson, Brian Wilson, Adam Ant, Jody Watley, films/tv, etc.
Let me know if you have any questions about this system.
Regards,
Todd Herreman

Todd,

thanks for the notice. - I do have a question, out of curiosity - and if you mention Michael Jackson, I was wondering whether you could shed a bit of light: The Qantas / Reelin' in the years episodes on the CMI say that the CMI would have been used for Thriller. Elsewhere I got the impression that this might be a near miss (and therefore, the program a little bit over-enthusiastic). Do you happen to know?

-

I read your drive does not spin. I don't know whether this is the reason for your decision to sell the system - would you want to be able to diagnose the drive instead and keep the system if it could be fixed with some limited effort?

Kind regards, Joerg

Greetings Joerg,
Regarding Thriller, I do not know the history there - my involvement was in the early 90's with the Series III; given the time of Thriller, it would have been a Series II (which I also had, but I was not in Los Angeles yet). As for the reason for selling the Series III, I am just not using it - although I have looked in to restoring it (in which case I might use it again). Peter Weilk has been very helpful, and he seems to believe that it would not take much to get it running again (starting with just getting a new drive, which he could easily supply). If the current auction does not yield a happy buyer, I will probably proceed with Peter's suggestions.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Regards,
Todd

Hey Todd (and Joerg),

Sorry to hear your Fairlight trip may be coming towards its end (I do miss my "green-faced girl" - as a girlfriend used to jealously allow), and yet a bit jealous at the idea of your firing her back up.

Thriller: probably would have been Michael Boddicker. Whether Stephen Dewey had jumped the Thompson Twins and joined Boddicker as his programmer yet, I donno'.

Think twice about selling your series 3.
You will never get one again, and it's sound is not just lightyears ahead, it's from another dimension.
I'm a Akai / Emu user since 1989 and was a real fan of the S1100's sound and sonic pressure, but the series 3 just fascinates me, it's a complete different sound domain than generic samplers, not to mention most softsamplers..

However many tricks new gear does, the sound of the Fairlight is just the closest thing to analog i've come to mix with.
It Blends so easily with Jupiter 8, Moog and Prophet 5 sounds, it's scary.

All the best,

Regards Karel Post - Hitrecordproduction -

I have heard many samplers and tend to judge them by how well they replicate a TR808, was a revelation when I heard them on the III. Wonder how well it represents a Minimoog bass?

Re: Series III for sale - Question :-)

2012-06-13 by ataritt

I've got 808 samples on my series 3, and i think it's library stuff.
I don't think a fairlight excells in replicating 808 sounds, but the quality shines through sampled acoustic sounds, like percussion, where transients are crucial for a hifi sound.

A lot of the factory sounds are of smashing quality, nowhere flashy, but in a mix very present and musically interesting.

Most of these sounds sound like a million dollars to me.

A Akai S1100 machine samples 808 sounds nearly perfectly, but bass sounds, bass guitar specifically shine through the Fairlight like no other machine.

So generally, wide spectrum audio is tailor cut for fairlight, dynamic representation of fairlight is somehow better analog sounding then all other machines i've used in the last 30 years.

I'm going to build my own library soon, and report on that effort later.

An impressive machine that will be in my studio for the next 30 years.

Re: Series III for sale - Question :-) - Re. non spinning boot drive

2012-08-23 by dkevefnzs

Hi Todd & Peter,

been away for a while. Thank you both for your answers :-)

Todd, re your drive: It's possible to read and write scsi drive images under linux. I've made backups of mine, and also replaced a few disks by newer ones that way.

Your error description is very short - you'd have to determine whether your drive is really the problem (there's a possibility of heads sticking to the platters so the motor cannot spin up anymore), or the CMI power supply, or the CMI computer logic (if the drive is jumpered to delay spinup until being addressed by the SCSI host, and the host never says a word, well, it won't spin up either).

An easy way to find out: get the drive out, put it into an external SCSI case, review jumper settings on the drive configuring spinup behaviour, and/or ultimately connect it to a PC with an SCSI controller and SCSI bios or Linux. That would also allow you to copy an image from the drive (to any other location that must have sufficient free space), in case it should decide to spin up only one more time. :-) Theoretically, I can tell you how it goes, but if you're unexperienced you might ask s.o. who knows any Unix/Linux to do it for you. Re. sticky HDU heads, I remember there are discussions in Usenet or the Web...

If your drive really does not spin any more, replacements - for the hardware - are easily available on ebay. I could thoretically dump one rather clean image of mine to a drive - would probably take an hour or so to do - or I even have one working spare boot disk that I got (rather expensive) from ebay years ago. But it's all OS 11.xx here, so I'm unsure whether that would be of any use to you - and well, it would definitely not help if your drive was *not* defective at all in the first place :-)

Kind regards, Joerg
