Hi All. I thought you might be amused with a recent development of mine. It's a 4 Gbyte solid state drive mounted on a SCSI connector, from which it draws its power. You can think of it in the same way as a memory stick for computers. It has software partitions, so is bootable and very fast. The green LED is power, the red, "disk" access. Check the images I posted in the photos section. This is a prototype, I hope to have something more professional looking soon. Regards, Peter Wielk in sunny Sydney

I'm not the Peter you ment, but I can answer this question: This is a replacement for a harddisk. A CMI IIx does not support a harddisk, so the answer is: no.What you need is this: http://hxc2001.free.fr/floppy_drive_emulator/index.html#SDCARDFloppyemulatorAccording to the latest news it should now be able to read AND write CMI images. Only problem is you need to make a sort of converter for the connector.Info: http://users.bart.nl/users/pb0aia/cm/8-525.html and http://nemesis.lonestar.org/computers/tandy/hardware/model16_6000/floppyfix.htmlAlso you need a frontplate that can be placed in your mainframe and holds the new "drives". I.m thinking about removing one of the 8" drives and place 2 of the HxC's in that place..If anyone is planning to do this, please let us know. Perhaps we could save some work by working together.Regards,Peter Kersten.---------------------------------------------------

I've got a Rev C HxC and a Rev F HxC. The Rev C is in my Emulator II and it works brilliantly. I was going to swap it out with the Rev F HxC, and then take the Rev C and try to get it working in my IIx. I'm interested in hearing any progress in this respect as well! I received my Rev F HxC and spent some quality time with it the past couple of weekends. The short story is that I was able to get it to work with my IIx -- booting, reading, writing, formatting. I just posted some pics and HxC disk images. The slightly longer story is that I did have to experiment a bit to get it working. It turns out that you need to swap the disk sides in the image. There is an option to do that in the HxC tool, but I couldn't get it to work. (I'll send an email to the author and ask about that). I posted a profile (.fpf) file which you can use with the HxC tool to set up the disk parameters for the CMI (except for the side swapping). I was mainly interested in turning my ImageDisk images into HxC images, so I used the IMDU tool to convert the .IMD images into raw binary images. I wrote a quick little hack to flip the sides in those raw images -- I also posted the C code for that. Hopefully we won't need that for long. I also posted a few converted images. I've only tested this with the Rev F HxC with the latest firmware. You'll have to make a cable to connect the CMI's 8" drive cable to the HxC. Hi Joe, That's fantastic news. Thanks for investing the time and resources to test this out. Do you mind sharing the info on how one has to make the cable to connect the HxC with the IIx? I'm guessing that this would be the right HxC model?: http://www.lotharek.pl/product.php?pid=42 Am I right that once I'd put your cmi_sysv20.hfe image on a HxC I can use it, as is, and boot the IIx from it? Or do the sides still need to be swapped? I want to sort everything out before I decide to buy an HxC and hack into my IIx. This would be useful for all sorts of older keyboards...

Check the images I posted in the photos section. This is a prototype, I hope to have something more professional looking soon.

Hi Joe,
Thanks for all of your hard work in bringing such exciting developments for the CMI 2X. You first gave us the USB mouse and TFT monitor adaptor and now it looks like we will soon be able to use a modern storage solution ! Please keep us up to date. Thanks !
Cheers ,

*Everyone* who uses a sampler
with SCSI runs into this bother. The E-mu

something like this - and that's just one

I read on the HxC forum that problems with image seem to be solved. (http://torlus.com/floppy/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=118&p=6950#p6950) Next step would be creating a frontplate, same size as one floppydrive, holding two HxC "floppydrives" and one switch, so one of the HxC "floppydrives" can be switched with the remaining, original floppydrive, so 8" discs can be copied to the HxC "floppydrive". Perhaps we can do this as a group in order to keep costs down? Regards, Peter Kersten. any chance we could develop a hidden drive solution ? I somehow don't want to temper with the original appearance of the cmi. as I type this line a few ideas come to mind.. how .bout making a card witch holds the HxC and fit this one in one of the empty slots? or maybe create a faceplate that you can open like a door hiding the HcX behind it and keeping the classic look of the cmi intact.....or a external box ofcourse. any toughts on this .. or does my fear of losing the original industrial design seems ridiculous : ) ? --- In Fairlight-CMI@yahoogroups.com, "Peter K." <synthserv@...> wrote:

Actually, that would be a very cool solution. Dual card readers, dual switches, mounted on a card that fits into a slot. The only problem I can see is the amount of cabling that needs to be fitted. WT 17 sep 2012 kl. 09:56 skrev "dd_62622" <dd_626@hotmail.com>:

I am in! Ciao Fabio --- Dom 16/9/12, Peter K. <synthserv@hotmail.com> ha scritto: Da: Peter K. <synthserv@hotmail.com> Oggetto: [Fairlight-CMI] HxC and CMI IIx Floppydrive replacement A: Fairlight-CMI@yahoogroups.com Data: Domenica 16 settembre 2012, 17:42 First of all: Thanks very much Joe for your help. .

The E-mu ESI list (before the moderator stopped approving posts) had a couple of people a month looking for something like this - and that's just one make and model, with the people who knew what they wanted to ask for. Pump them out to everyone that uses SCSI samplers, and even old computers with SCSI disks. You'll get your volumes up and your prices down. Everyone wins. -- Gordon JC Pearce MM0YEQ

Hi All. If it helps in a bulk purchase, count me in. I also do a shed-load of industrial design, and would again be glad to help out in any way. See a picture of a similar project I did creating a CMI III solid state boot drive on an internal card, in the Yahoo Fairlight pics. It's somewhere under "SSD" or "Horizontal".. Regards, Peter Wielk, sunny Sydney.

Hi everyone, sorry I haven't been able to reply sooner -- too much (non-Fairlight) stuff going on! I'd like to make a CMI retrofit kit for the HxC, and probably will, but it will likely take a while. I've only got a little time on the weekends to work on it. The older machines have the full-height floppy drives but the newer ones have the half-height drives with a painted metal bezel/cover to fill the extra space. Take a look a the pictures of my machine in the photos section and you'll see what I mean. That metal frame comes out pretty easily. What I'd like to do is make a replacement frame that includes a cutout for the 3.5" drive form factor HxC. That would let you keep the existing drives installed, and you wouldn't need to cut any metal. I found a local metal shop that I think can make the frame, but have not had time to visit them yet. I'd also like to put a couple of small switches on that frame to let you select whether the HxC or old drive(s) is(are) used. For adapting the ribbon cable that carries the floppy signals, I am using a board I made long ago when I was experimenting with 3.5" drives on the CMI. I would want to make a few changes to the board before releasing it. We also need to get power to the HxC. I made an adapter cable that the 8" drive cable plugs into, but it is a older connector that I don't think is easily found. I want to find a better option for that power connection. I like the idea of mounting the HxC inside the card cage, but think it won't be very practical -- you really want access to the buttons and display on the front of the unit. The converted disk images are each 3.2MB. If you have a 1GB SD card, that will hold over 300 CMI disks! Joe --- In Fairlight-CMI@yahoogroups.com, "dvdborn" <dvdborn@...> wrote:

Good points ! I didn´t really think it through about haveing it on a card inside the CMI. One must be able to access the buttons on the HCX. How does the writing to the card work when you are making a sequence ? Any problems with that ? Hey Joe, How are you? It's Glenn in Cupertino Thanks again for your help with the floppy library, and for selling me the two USB mouse/monitor adspters( embarrased to say I've used the fairlight a few times since, but not hooked up the usb devices yet (health and time) This probably sounds strange, but after a recent stroke/aneurism, gone off the opiates for pain, and actually applying myself to the things I've slways meant to ( maybe having wiken up to how short time could be). Part of my rehabilitation has been a membership and classes at Techshop ( techshop.com) I mention this because while I've started there and taking classes ( partly to pursue the replacement hinges idea we spoke of( please don't tell anyone though), I mention it because I can probably do small production of metal/plastic there, affordably, if you're open to the possibility, to help with any future products for fairlight you may be interested in making Will hope for your help testing the hinges when I get to that stage;) Hope you're doing well, thanks for helping us all out so much, with the things you've designed Would the hxc work okay in place of series III drives as well? Please come by and visit me and my fairlights sometime? Am right by stevens creek blvd and foothill blvd Glenn 408-868-8309 Sent from my iPod

It wouldn´t be any different to using actual floppies except for the loading time. See Kirks answer below That´s how I´ve believed it works. To switch "floppy" you have to use the HCX menus. Right. You don't need 2 HxC emulators -- each one can look like 2 drives. I want to have a couple of switches to choose whether each drive select signal goes to the HxC or the old 8" drive. In my setup now I have both 8" drives disconnected and the HxC is emulating both the left and right drives. Joe --- In Fairlight-CMI@yahoogroups.com, "Peter K." <synthserv@...> wrote:

would it be possible to copy our 8" disks direct to the cf card using the drive select signal switches ? would be a great way to preserve our libraries if one could make the transfer to img on the cmi itself. cheers, DD --- In Fairlight-CMI@yahoogroups.com, "tama_rat" <britt@...> wrote:

As long as it´s a plug and play solution, there should be no problem for any CMI IIx user to upgrade to this. I would suggest even going so far as to include a preformatted card including the OS-disk and the complete soundlibrary.
