Haywire track automation--please help!

Haywire track automation--please help!

2006-11-04 by Aaron Wagner

Hello,

I'm in desperate need of help. Sorry to sound overdramatic.

I am having a problem whereby, as I play through a project, the levels in the Mixing
window will fluctuate uncontrollably on their own. So I will start a track and have a certain
recorded layer (it seems to be only happenning with MIDI, not Audio tracks), say, at -4.2,
in the middle of the song the level will fluctuate--always upward, so one level will get
incredibly loud--without me having any control. If I try to re-adjust the level to what I
want, Logic takes on a mind of its own and continues to push the level up.

My friend has told me this is a real-time track automation thing; that I have done
something during the initial recording process so that auto-mixing is a function Logic is
taking onto itself. What can I do to reverse this? What window do I need to have up and
what do I need to press so that I am not having this problem?

I hope my explanation has been sufficient, but if you are willing to help me but need
better description, I can be reached at: aaronwagner1977@.... Or reply to this
message and I will check it out.

Thanks so much for your help. Hope all are well and not in need of the obnoxious date-
site promotions and whatnot that creep onto this list-serve.

Aaron

It sounds like you were in "Touch" mode while playing
down a track. You then probably "grabbed" the fader
(at some point) and moved it around.
Logic "recorded" this as Automation. Tricky, right? ;
)
There's a way to strip the selected track's
autoomation. See if this works: Select the track you
wish to remove the automation from... Then, go to
Options > Track Automation > Remove All Automation
From Selected Track.
I'm not in front of Logic right now, but that should
be the path to get back to square one with your
track...
It's also good practice to put yourself in "Off" mode
on a track if you want to adjust things on the fly
without automating.
Look for the pulldown menu on the "left" side of your
selected track (under the "Mute", "Solo", "Record" or
"Freeze" buttons.)
Let me know if this helps! Good Mixing...

charlie

I occasionly have had similair problems(?) To say it simply: go to the event window and remove any volume(cntlr#7) messages .In short you are probably experiencing a conflict between the two types of automation.

Aaron,

Select the track thats doing the wierd stuff, then select "Event List" From one of the tabs
up top .... toward the right.

Look down the list and there should be midi data that reflects your volume surges.
Delete/tame the fluxuations to your taste. The left column indicates the kind of MIDI
event like: Note, sustain, volume, etc.

I had the same thing happen when I imported a MIDI file, choral piece that originated
in a Finale project. Finale tried to humanize it by adding dynamics changes, those
fluxuations were imbedded in the midi code.

That drove me nuts until I found it. Even telling the automation to be "off" on the
channel didn't fix the problem.

      Hope this helps,

                 Pete

One more thing,

the midi entries in the Event List will follow the music as it plays, so just keep that
window open while you let Logic play the part that it screwey and you should find the
undesirable event pretty easily.
