L8 and AU nodes

L8 and AU nodes

2007-09-16 by GAmoore@aol.com

Does anyone know about how the AU nodes are implemented? Is it only Logic
instruments and plugs, or can you run instances of 3rd party instruments and
plugs and things like the UAudio board? And if so, which machine do you install
on?

In the downloadable manual it explains it. Nodes can process Logic
plugs ( with a few exceptions such as exs-24) and can also process
3rd party AU effects plugins (not instruments though). You need your
AU plugins installed on the main machine as well as *all* node
machines. Also, the AU plugin must be the exact same version in all
cases. I'm not sure how the UAD-1 and Powercore plugins will operate
in this regard. It does not explicitly say anything about the dsp-
based AU plugins. If I had to hazard a guess, I would think that you
would need the same plugin versions installed on all machines but
also that all node machines would require a DSP card installed with
the appropriate plugins licenses authorized too. That's just a guess
though. It's not like you're going to get the power of 3 UAD's when
you only have one card in your main machine.

I can't recall now if it is in the effects manual or the main Logic
Studio manual but I believe it was in one of those two that I read it.

The Logic plugs have already been node-friendly since 7.x. Whats new in L8 in
this regard?

If you need to install the same plug on two computers, hopefully its serial
number - rather than authorization or ilok.

With UAudio - I have the PCI version on my G5 but not the PCI express
version. So the upgrade is the difference.

Yes, that is true. However, even in 7.x, the exs-24 was not
available on a node.

This is up to the plugin manufacturer and not up to Apple since the
copy protection scheme is tied to the plugin and not to the host nor
the node software. ie, if the plugin is iLok normally, you'll need
an iLok on the node machine.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here. It won't matter if you
have a PCI version or a PCI Express version. What I think will
matter (and I don't know for sure - this is just speculation) is
whether you have a UAD card in your host and your node or not. I
think that you will need a UAD on each node as well as your host in
order for node processing to work.

This is how I'm interpreting it as well at this point. I also reckon
you will need the paid UAD-1 plugins authorised on both cards and
because they'll be in separate machines this will mean paying for
them twice. Just to be clear this is only my speculation but I would
take a small bet on this being the case.

Kind regards
