Logic 5

2008-09-13 by brewied

Hello all,

Any ideas where I could find a second hand Logic 5? I'm stuck on
Windows XP and having used Cubase for a couple of years, would like to
go back to Logic. Trawling the net came up empty so if any of you know
of a source for this now rare software, please let me know.

Thanks in advance,

Brian.

Isn't Logic a Mac-only program?

I'm a two-system user.

It used to be a Windows program...sigh...

I do love my Mac, but I still remember that fateful Monday morning
back in ?2003 ?2004 when it was announced that Apple was buying
Emagic and the Windows platform would no longer be supported. Logic
for Windows (LAW) was left to languish at version 5.5.1...still a
quite workable piece of software.

All you need, Brian, is an XS-Key with the Windows license on it.
There should be lots of them around, since Logic 8 no longer requires
a key. I have one. I think the actual software may still be
downloadable off an Emagic legacy site.

It has been since 7/1/2002 when Apple bought Emagic and discontinued
Windows development right away, last Windows version is 5.5.1.

Best,

Andy

Oh, OK, I didn't know that. Having to use 2 different systems, Mac for work and XP for home, it would be nice to have just one DAW software package.

Unfortunately for me, I found out about Pro Tools AFTER I had already invested in Sonar and Logic Express. So now I just play with both of them.

As an aside, I'm not a musician - I'm a news photographer/videographer. Every so often I put together a tune for a web video. Guess that makes me a musician wannabe! :-)

Lyle Mays and Stevie Wonder don't have to worry about any competition from me. ;-)

Ahh - "Apple the 11th", remember it well. 'Twas the 1st of July, 2002
that the announcement was made I believe. Logic was then at about v5.1.
A string of updates up to 5.5.1 came out over the following few months
(they mainly added the demos of the new Audio Instruments) and that was
  the final version on PC.

The main issues with Logic 5.5.1 are - poor support for multiple cores,
odd behaviour with more than 512 MB of RAM and poor support from VST
instruments - hanging notes etc.

There are some workarounds but you can get the odd "insufficient memory"
message when you try to do something simple with midi despite 2GB
installed and you might need to use Energy XT 1.4 as a host within
Logic to get some Native Instruments plugins to behave themselves.

Regards,
Murray

I'm still on 5.5 and I refuse to budge for now, although I know I'm missing out on a lot. I haven't had many problems. You defiantly can't have more then 1g of ram in your box, but other then that it's still a sweet rig.
