Open L9 in L8

Open L9 in L8

2009-08-13 by Gregory Anderson

I know this is a long shot, but is there anyway to open a project
that was saved in L9 in L8? I don't have L9, can't see any need to
get it, but someone is sending me a project that I will need to open,
and all I have is L8. Is there an option to save a L9 project so
that it can be opened with L8?

Thanks,

Gregory

Tried it out last week. A guy running L8 opened my L9 project without
hassle, the flex time tracks need to be printed to audio files though,
that's the only limitation. Everything else works.

Take care
L.

No output sound with Fast Track Pro

2009-08-14 by Andy Brook

Many thanks for all the replied about mastering and I'm trying the
advice out and will let you know how I get on. Now I have an urgent
problem (again). I have a singer coming round in twelve hours, I've
been without power for two days and finally got it back but don't have
time to figure out this problem.

After reading a few reviews I bought the FastTrack Pro audio
interface. Then I couldn't install the driver from the CD (then found
others had this problem on mac) so I downloaded and installed the
driver from M Audio's site to my mac hd. Then I went to preferences in
the mac settings and chose the Fastrack pro which was listed as an
option, so I am guessing that the driver downloaded ok. I chose
headphones for the output. In Logic 8 I chose the Fast Track Pro as
the audio device and saved the change. Now I have no sound output at
all. I can see the sound running through the mixer, but its not
outputting to my headphones, nor to the audio interface.

I tried choosing the audio interface as my output device in mac
settings but it says there is no output control for the device. It
also says there is no input control either although the meter shows it
is hearing the input from the mic.

I can hear itunes through my headphones ok, its just in Logic where
there is now no output.

Could anyone suggest what blindingly obvious thing I have missed?

As always, thanks in advance for the invaluable advice. One of these
days I will be able to answer a question myself and then I will be
very proud!

thanks

Andy B

Hi,

I have a Fast Track Pro myself. As far as the drivers are concerned there really are none for the mac. It is a class compliant dievice and should work just fine. That is why there are no controls for it. As far as the headphones are concerned... were do you choose headphones out? There is no separate headphone out on the fast track..it just plays what you here through the monitors through the headphones...similar to a stereo...

You may have just picked an I/O that was labeled headphones out...

just make sure that fast track is picked as your output device. Then make sure the mix and the A/B switches are set properly on it

Re: [Logic_Cafe] Re: No output sound with Fast Track Pro

2009-08-14 by Andy Brook

Thanks Rob. Since posting that message I found out that I can't have
the output through my mac headphones, the input and output both have
to be through the fast track. I then found that connecting the fast
track after loading up logic made it work. Now I can hear everything
and record audio, although the line input has to be set very high to
make it work. I'm using a Shure SM58 mic and an XLR cable. I'm such a
novice that I'm not even sure if I should use phantom power, although
it doesn't seem to make much difference either way. I used to have a
similar problem getting enough input volume on my BOSS BR 1600
recording unit. Must be something I'm doing wrong but for the life of
me I can't work it out and google isn't helping either. I got the A/B
switch right, at least!

Re: No output sound with Fast Track Pro

What you can do however, is set up an aggregate device on the mac

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1215

this is a great way to setup more than one output or input...

also try Soundflower which can help with that too... so you can have your fasttrack on channels 1 and 2 and put your headphones to 3 and 4 and use the aggregate device and or soundflower to do so.. basically the aggregate device is like a fake master device

Re: [Logic_Cafe] Re: No output sound with Fast Track Pro

2009-08-16 by Steve Currington

SM58 is a Dynamic so no phantom power needed.
The fast Track Pro's built in amps should boost the signal you are
getting.
Adjust this via the gain control and other controls on the front (I
don't think you can do this via the driver (application) that comes
with the fastrack but i am not sure)

Check pages 10 and 11 of the Fast track Pro User Manual.
excerpts below

=======

Setting Up Your Recording Levels
Using the Mic/Inst Inputs
Connect your microphone, instrument or line level source to the Fast
Track Pros front panel Mic/Inst inputs. Make sure the associated
channels Inst/Line button is set to the out (Inst) position for
microphone or instrument input, or to the in (Line) position for line
level
sources. If you are using a condenser microphone, be certain to slide
the 48V PH Power switch to the On position (after connecting the
microphone to the XLR input). If your microphone input signal is too
hot (Clip LED lights steadily), press the Pad button to lower the input
level.
Adjust each channels input GAIN knob to achieve a fairly steady green
Signal LED without triggering the red Clip LED, while audibly
testing your input levels (i.e., strumming the guitar, or speaking
into the mic).
NOTE: When recording with microphones, it is best to keep the mic at
some distance from the main speakers, or use headphones
to monitor. Feedback may occur when microphones are too close to
speakers.

========

Monitoring Your Inputs for Recording
Using the Input/Playback Mix Control
The input/playback Mix knob controls the source of the audio sent to
TRS Outputs 1 and 2, fading between the input signal (at the front-
panel Mic/Inst inputs 1 and 2) and the output signal from your audio
application.
< When the knob is turned fully counter-clockwise (the IN position),
only the input signals are heard at the outputs.
< When the knob is turned fully clockwise (the PB position), only the
output signal from your DAW is heard at the outputs.
< Any point between the IN and PB positions will give you a mix of
both inputs.
The real advantage of the Mix knob is that it enables you to monitor
your live inputs in real time as youre recording them, while also
monitoring the existing tracks coming from your DAW, as well as
allowing you to control the relative levels of both sources. When you
do this, be sure to mute the inputs on the tracks youre recording.
Otherwise, youll hear the direct signal AND the return signal from
the DAW.

===========

NB if you really have issues with the Dynamic mics output level.. you
cold try a relatively low cost (additional ) in-line preamp to boost
the signal at the mic itself.

A pretty good one is the Triton Audio's FetHead device - http://www.tritonaudio.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=categoryionid=4&id=17&Itemid=33
available from the above website (Based in msterdam Netherlands)
or available locally in USA from Oktava Mod.. http://www.oktavamodshop.com/product_info.php?cPath=3&products_id=122&osCsid=lpigfr7kqrth19q1qctkklorc4

But you should be able to sort things without this. But just in case...
