Alternator conversion

Alternator conversion

2003-07-02 by followsw

Hi,

I've been lurking on this list for a while, but have the need for
some group expertise. I'd like to change the dynamo on my 1970 V6 for
an alternator. The wiring part of it is fine, but I'm having problems
getting the alternator low enough to avoid fouling the bonnet.

I've been trying to use a standard ford alloy alternator braket but
it leaves the alternator too high up.

Anyone else found a suitable alternative, or is it fabricate my own/
modify the dynamo mount time?

Thanks in advance

Will

Will,

It has been several years, but I recall converting mine w/ a smaller japanese
brand alternator (Honda?), can't remember the brand. Anyway, I used a
universal adjustable bracket that just barely cleared the bonnet on my V6 and I was
very satisfied. Sorry I can't be more specific. Good luck.

Will,
Just did mine about a year ago. I used a Triumph TR7 alternator and the original front (with adjusting slot) bracket and made an "L" bracket for the rear out of some channel iron. Works great and clears the bonnet. Only trouble I had was finding a belt that was short enough to keep the alternator clear of the bonnet. I can even give you the correct belt number.
I have pix of the install if you'd like them.
Is your dynamo still operable? Mine was (is) chrome and looked great on the engine but the back plate was shot and I can't find a replacement. Care to sell yours?
Where are you located?

Will,
I've put a pic in the "photos" section of the site of an alternator conversion that was sent to me when I did mine. Mine basically is the same except my rear bracket is a little different.
It's photo #69.

Thanks for the information, especially the photo!

I'm based in the UK, so would probably be a bit pricey to send
anything over!

Another quick question though. My V6 was originally a V4, and I'm
starting to wonder whether I've still got the V4 radiator as it runs
a little warm - never seems to boil or do anything drastic, but seems
to hover around 95-100 degrees. Anyone know how to identify the
correct V6 radiator (or the V4 one for that matter?)

Thanks again

Will

Will,
Mine is a 4 row radiator and runs fine in 100 Degree F heat. I've read that some of the early V6s' were built with V4 radiators and subsequently over-heated. Mine has a Lucas pusher fan installed in front of the radiator and it looks like 1970 vintage. It was probably an afterthought on Marcos part. Instead of putting in a bigger radiator, why not just install a fan? My currrent radiator was installed in the UK before it was exported to the US.
Check Ashley's website:
He has a V4 that he is converting to V6. He probably has the answers you need.

Will,
I can give you dimensions to correctly identify a V-4 radiator:
core height = 15 1/2 inches
core width = 14 3/8 inches
total height = 21 3/4 inches
total width is essentially the same as core width
Hope this helps, - Donny

Thanks again for the information - I'll have to measure mine and see.
I think I will just install an electric fan, must be better than the
engine driven one. Was also considering improving the ducting to
force more air through.
