Vintage Marcos Motors

2004-02-27 by Meggsief@aol.com

Garry,

In 1966, it is my belief that the engine was a 1600 & 1500. Is that correct?
I have the opportunity to purchase a Kent engine and transmission for my '66.
In your opinion is the Kent a good engine to invest in? Do you have any other
suggestions? Also, I will have to put a roll-bar in. Do you have any diagrams
or words of wisdom as to how to mount the roll bar properly?

PS The head of the rules committee for RMVR Colorado is currently interested
in a Marcos. If anyone knows of a car that is currently for sale in any
condition, please contact me.

Hal,

You are right, the 1600 and 1500 are both period correct running in pushrod
form with twin Weber DCOE Carbs,(Sorry no twin cam). The Kent block is
really the only one to go for as there are tons of readily available tuning
parts and knowledgeable tuners. This is still the Block used for vintage
formula based 1600's although they have sadly gone out of production. ( they
were still produced in South Africa until quite recently).
What is the spec for the one you have in mind? What gearbox is with it?
There are so many variations it is probably wise to pin down the application
( race, fast road etc) before you make a buy decision.
if you tell me what you will be using it for we can give you a period spec.
and some idea of how much you should expect to spend.
Roger is in England right now but when he gets back I will get him to
sketch out the Rollbar configuration he used. Quite tricky in the wooden
chassis. I will also post some pictures of how we mounted mine in the steel
chassis.

Hope this helps.

Garry

Gary,
Thanks for the info. I plan on trying to build a streetable track
car. I would like to be able to compete well against my class. I was speaking to
the elgibility guru from Rocky mtn vintage racing and he was flipping through
a book of cars and thier motors and the like. He couldnt find any info on a
1600 engine for the '66. He said I would have to get proof. All I have is an
advertisement with the different power plants but there is no date on it. Also,
if you were to build a track/street car what engine trans would you use?Would
it be worth my time to change the rear end. (de dion} Do you recall the way
this car was set up to race back in the 60s

Hal,
The DeDion rear end was used in less than 30 cars I believe and they were all the 1800 Volvo cars (wood frame).

Hello Hal
Forgive me for putting in my two penn'eth (ten cents), but if your wooden chassis car has the De-dion rear, then I don't think it was a 1600/1500. I could be wrong but I think that the De-dion was only fitted to the 1800s and not all those. It's just a thought if you are aiming at the purists.
Best regards Jac

Jac,
I actually was kinda thinking out loud... I was wondering if there was
a way to improve the rear end. Any ideas on set up or anything that has
worked for everyone will be greatly appreciated.

Hello Hal
I don't know the condition of your car, but I must assume it is reasonable at worst. Other wise you would not be considering racing it.
Because of the history behind the car, I would if the car were mine, (condition of De-dion being good or repairable) keep the De-dion and source a Volvo 1800 engine or even the 2Ltre. They are almost identical, and most of the parts are inter-changeable. I also understand that they are plentiful at your side of the world.
Spare parts at competition level are also plentiful, I am led to believe.
You could get bags of HP from this type of engine, and keep the original speck to within an inch or two.
Hope that hasn't thrown a spanner in the works(no pun).
Best regards Jac.

garry,
In an email you had sent me you stated that the 1600cc {1967} motor
had twin weber carbs. Is there a way to prove that to my rules committe? As it
stands now I can race in D prod. {probably} but I am told with only one carb.
Also can you send me a copy of the way you configured the roll bar.

Thanks for all your help so far and I cant wait to get this thing rolling.
