Radiator Fan/cooling, etc

Radiator Fan/cooling, etc

2001-11-15 by Don Lattimer

Hi all,

I noticed on Tad Todd's ex car (now for sale at Wirewheel, Inc.) that
the engine fan has been removed and a radiator fan installed. Most
likely controlled by a thermostat. Has anyone else done this??

If Tad is lurking around maybe he can provide us some info on the
mfg., install, cost, etc.

I have no overheating problems now but it would be nice to do away
with the fan (less work for the engine).

Victoria British sells a kit in either 10" or 12" size.

Mine also has an electric fan and no engine-attached fan.
Unfortunately though, whoever wired it, has it come on as soon as you
turn the key to the first position, not controlled by a thermostat as
you would think.
No overheating problems so far, but it hasn't been all that hot here
since I got the car either.

I'll check tonight to see if I can make out the manufacture and all
that.

I also have a Kenlowe electric fan fitted (no mechanical fan), controlled by
a thermostat linked to the top radiator hose. During most use, the fan
doesn't comes on except when I'm stuck in stopped or very slow moving
traffic on a hot day. If the situation persists for half an hour or so, the
engine will eventually get so hot that I have to turn the engine off or pull
over to let it cool down. In the last ten years I've only been in that
situation once, so it really hasn't been an issue.

Don
When I rebuild my engine, I but a radiator fan (with a thermostat) on the radiator (rebuild also) but I left the engine fan on. My though at that time was increased cooling is a good thing!

Hope the get together on Dec 8th works out, looking forward to seeing your car and meeting up!

Re: Radiator Fan/cooling, etc

2001-11-15 by Tad Todd

Hi Don, Stephen et al.,

When I got my car it had a kenlow radiator fan but no engine fan.
The kenlow (thermostatically controlled) fan went to the well-
populated British electric parts heaven. I simply replaced it with a
fan purchased from my local Pep Boys parts store. I believe it cost
about $80 and performed admirably in the South Florida summer heat.
I also swear by a product called Wetter Water (or Water Wetter, I
always get it mixed up). It's some sort of glycol radiator additive
that I've found to be very effective in keeping the engine temp under
contol.

Good luck,
Regards,
Tad

Re: Radiator Fan/cooling, etc/water wetter

2001-11-16 by Don Lattimer

Yep, Water Wetter, made by Redline Oil. www.redlineoil.com

Good stuff, even when used with "anti-freeze". It works best if
mixed only with water but does an admirable job with a mix of anti-
freeze also. Better than just water/antifreeze mix. Up to 20 degrees
(F) cooler I believe.

Thanks Tad,
