Announcing New QTR-Print-Tool Application for Mac OS X

Announcing New QTR-Print-Tool Application for Mac OS X

2012-10-03 by royvharrington

The new QTR-Print-Tool program is now available for general use.

This is a completely new program for layout and printing of images on OS X.
It works with any print driver not just QTR. So although it looks like a
QTR standalone front end it really is much more general purpose and a
separate product.

There is a free 30-day trial. To use the product after that you need to
purchase a serial number for just $39.

See: http://www.quadtonerip.com/html/QTRprinttool.html

This is an automated process that will email the purchaser of QTR-Print-Tool
a serial number that unlocks the app. Note that the QTR driver is still the
same $50 but does not have a serial number.

Thanks,
Roy Harrington

Thanks Roy!

I am a qtr user since the early command-line days and still using it on a daily basis. And now you did it again: this new tool is absolutely excellent!

From a digital negative maker's viewpoint I have two tiny wishes though that might make life even more easier. It would be great if the tool could:

1. invert the image after an icc profile is applied in a profiled workflow
2. flip the image

I too am a digital negative maker and would love to invert and flip as mentioned by Kees.

Thanks much for your consideration Roy. Nice work as always.

That does seem like a nice idea. I'll need to think where it could be done.

Roy,

Time for dumb questions.

I sent the $39 sight unseen because I just knew that it would be a useful addition to my printing workflow. But I'm stuck on how to use the program.

I put in the serial number; I already had the latest print driver installed (do I need to reinstall?) So, now I have the PS image on the screen along with the Print Tool Application. How do I proceed to print? Are there instructions somewhere?

Hi Harry,

I don't have any instructions, but its just like any other Mac program.
You can open files, drag images onto the paper. All the buttons have "tips".
Drag whole images, edges and corners with the mouse. Mostly its a lot
easy to just try things than to read about them.

You print like anything else -- Page Setup, Print, Print dialogs.
Much like Photoshop.
QTR-Print-Tool is independent of the print drivers - QTR or Epson drivers.

Re: Announcing New QTR-Print-Tool Application for Mac OS X

2012-10-05 by David

Roy,
I don't think that you have said this, but I am guessing that a major motivation for developing this program was to circumvent the ongoing problems with printing from recent versions of PhotoShop on the Mac. Should we expect that printing through the Print-Tool and QTR will be equivalent to printing with CS2 and "Let Photoshop Determine Colors"?

After I updated to CS5, I started using the "Generic Gama 2.2" profile for both the document and printer, as recommended in thread on another forum:

http://www.dpug.org/forums/sitemap/t-2255.html

I found that I had to relinearize my profiles a bit, but everything has worked well since then. To use your new programs, would I go back to the profiles made with CS2?

Thanks,
David

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Announcing New QTR-Print-Tool Application for Mac OS X

2012-10-05 by Roy Harrington

Hi David,

You are right -- color management was a major motivator for this new
program. I tried unsuccessfully to work with Apple
and Adobe to get CM to work correctly again after new Photoshops and
new OS's. Although they tried to work together and
came up with undocumented methods it only worked with RGB not
grayscale files and drivers. I don't think either really
understood/accepted the other's point of view.

So Print-Tool should work just like the old CS2 and CS3 and old OSX.
You've got the No Color Management and the
App controlled (i.e like Let Photoshop Determine Colors) way that uses
exactly one CM conversion. The only difference
being that Photoshop uses Adobe's color engine but Print-Tool (and
OSX) all use Apple's ColorSync engine for the
conversions. (the problems all arose not from which engine but the
fact that things were often double profiled).

Old profiles should work just like they used too.

Roy,

The other way around, any chance we see a Quadtone Rip disguised as a
normal Windows driver?
There were no CM issues with Windows after all and having Qimage at the
front end with a QTR driver for the output most wishes I have could be
satisfied. That Qimage is RGB internally does not make a difference either.

Roy,

Thanks for taking the time to respond; I know you¹re a busy man. And I
apologize for needing such hand holding.

I solved part of the problem. I had been trying to drag the opened IMAGE
onto the background grid. When I dragged the image FILE onto the grid, it
worked. After Page Setup, when I hit Print, however, I do not get the QTR
dialog. Just a simple one without the usual choices of paper profiles, etc.
See the attached screen shot.

Of course, if I open the image in PS, then hit Print, the normal dialog does
appear. So, I¹m still missing that last step.

Roy,
Thanks for the clarification. I look forward to trying the program, once I get some printer problems resolved.

I also have a minor operational question. If I am working in PhotoShop, for instance, and printing with the QTR-Print-Tool, do I need to reopen the file in Print-Tool each time a change is saved from PhotoShop? Or will Print-Tool know to use the updated file?

You do have to reopen updated file.
Good idea for future update though.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Announcing New QTR-Print-Tool Application for Mac OS X

2013-05-27 by J.F. Felinik

Hi all,

Thank you for this software Roy!!!!

I've spent a full day yesterday Sunday trying to get my head around how the
print engine in Apple Aperture works with roll printing... - Conclusion, it
doesn't, there's no way to get a correct and consecutive result doing this
in Apple Aperture, and after spending some serious time with google I ended
up buying the QTR Print Tool.

So if anyone out there is wasting enormous amounts of roll paper and
getting insane by the minute, give it up, it doesn't work, but you'll find
relief in the QTR Print Tool, this works like a charm and finally for the
first time since I got my 7600 (2 weeks ago) I've been able to do a print
where I only had to cut one side in the end, all the other margins were
respected and perfect, as it should be!

For me there's no return, and I'm very happy to have found this little gem.

Disclaimer, I'm not working for or in any way affiliated with Roy, I have
tried his Quadtone RIP for my black and white inkset (MIS UT-14), and
stumbled over QTR Print Tool on this forum, and it really saved me
yesterday, so I felt today that I had to get the word out there for all
other frustrated Apple Aperture users.

For me now, next thing is to seriously start to look for alternatives to
Aperture, not that I am not happy with it's features for editing etc. but
this really took the spirit out of me, one of the most important things you
need in a photo workflow software, printing, and it is totally broken, not
a good sign!!

Have a great week fellah print-masters!!

Best
JF

as of CS6 and 10.8.3, Photoshop no longer supports printing non-color
managed files. They provide a small (pretty useless) utility that will, so
I was trying to figure out a solution

Then i got this email

thanks!!!!!

JF,

I am only printing US Letter size on a Mac but using QTR Print certainly applies as you mention. It takes the guess work out of Photoshop printing & I get exactly what I am expecting. It is well worth the small investment.
