Now that I have made some pleasing images with QTR and Eboni 6 inks using an Epson 1430, I'd like to make some 16x20 prints and am looking for a printer. Is there a particular model that is recommended - or any that are best avoided ? Thanks in advance !

I found that the Epson 4000 has a weak dmax with Eboni on the matte papers I like. It would be nice if we could gather the dmax numbers for the 17" printers using Eboni on some standard matte paper(s) -- Epson Hot Press Natural would be ideal. Additional cost aside, would it be better to purchase a different model, or an even larger printer, even if we only plan to make 16x20 prints ? Would there be other advantages, like DMax, greater resolution, better image fidelity, etc. ? --- In QuadtoneRIP@yahoogroups.com, Paul Roark <roark.paul@...> wrote:

I would go for a larger size since, when using QTRip, I have to leave at least a 1 inch border (actually closer to 1,25" to be sure), as to avoid micro banding. On a 17" printer, making a 16x20, it would be nice to check first if everything is OK. Good luck --- In QuadtoneRIP@yahoogroups.com, "kenleegallery" <kenlee333@...> wrote:

Thanks - I forgot about that problem. If we subtract 3 or 4 inches from the long dimension, then we're down to a print of 18 inches in length... Ouch. --- In QuadtoneRIP@yahoogroups.com, "jcphoto52" <jacques.caron@...> wrote:

I've had a 3800 for quite a few years. It's the best printer I've used from Epson. The current 3880 is basically the same. It does not suffer the issue of banding at top and bottom like the smaller printers (this is because the weaving is in the printer so its the same as the Epson driver). Its got medium sized carts so they last pretty well. The downsides for me are not an issue but YMMV: 1) Carts are different from all the other Epsons so empty ones may be hard to get. I use Epson ink. 2) it does not support roll paper. Epson driver has a max length of 37inches but QTR will go out to 128inches. So you can make long panoramas but its a little hassle -- cut the roll paper to size first and hand feed the long sheet in. Tolerable if you don't do a lot I'd say. BTW, the current x900 printers are HUGE compared to older x800 and x880 printers if you are considering the larger printers. I assume that the newer 17" models are better than the 4000 with respect to matte paper dmax. My 7800 is better than the 7600 was. But, a list member still noticed that the dmax of his 4800 was not up to the 1400 -- likewise for my 7800 v. 1400. I'm not sure if it is the 1.5 pl drop that gives the 1400 type it's dmax advantage or what. That said, I find my 7800 matte paper dmax to be fine; not so with the 4000. So, I've generally been pointing people to the 4800 for 17" Eboni-6, with the caveat that I've never used a 4800. At any rate, if 16x20 is your top size, I would probably avoid the 24" printers. Having both, I find the 17" model easier to live with. Part of it is just the space required, but I also like the paper tray setup. The Epson 3880 and 4900 are both 17-inch printers: the 3880 uses 9 inks and the 4900 uses 11 inks. For QTR in general and Eboni inks in particular, is there any advantage to the 4900 ? For example, resolution ? Many thanks ! --- In QuadtoneRIP@yahoogroups.com, Paul Roark <roark.paul@...> wrote:

No to your primary question. The Epson 3880 is about as good as it gets for QTR. I have no experience with the Eboni 6 inksets. However, for Cone K7 I am able to get about the same Dmax with the older Epson printers (2200, 7600) as with the newer models (3880, 7800, etc.) Sandy --- In QuadtoneRIP@yahoogroups.com, "kenleegallery" <kenlee333@...> wrote:

I have been happily printing with 6KPlus on my 3800 for a number of months now. I'm running 6 carbon dilutions along with Epson LC and LM for toning. I've made up to a 16x24 gloss print without any issues. Here is what I've been getting for Dmax with Eboni and MIS PK . . . Eboni (matte) Epson Hot Press Natural - L* 14.82 / Density 1.73 Canson Rag Photographique - L* 16.48 / Density 1.66 MIS PK (gloss) Canson Platine - L* 3.34 / Density 2.43 Canson Baryta Photographique - L* 4.32 / Density 2.32 (not linearized) Harman Gloss Baryta - L* 7.28 / 2.09 (not linearized) Museo Silver Rag - L* 6.37 / 2.15 (not linearized) Canson coatings and MIS PK play very well together as you can see. Eboni does well on Rag Photographique and extremely well on Hot Press Natural. My favourite combination these days is Eboni / 6KPlus on Epson Hot Press Natural. On both of my most recent images I've had comments that they look like charcoal or pencil drawings, which makes me smile. In part I suspect that is due to the beautiful, deep, rich blacks Eboni produces on HPN. I'm using a neutral curve I created. In part I suspect that is due to the way I've processed the images. Terry.

Could you please explain the density numbers you are sharing ? Are the L* numbers for black, or the paper itself ? --- In QuadtoneRIP@yahoogroups.com, Terry Ritz <t.ritz@...> wrote:

My apologies for being so slow to respond. The numbers I shared below are for black. L* is the Luminosity component of the Lab colour space. Lower L* values represent darker blacks. With density on the other hand, a higher number represents a darker black. Terry.

Thank you very much. By coincidence, I have both Canson Rago Photographique and Epson Hot Press Natural. They are both lovely with the Eboni inkset. It's helpful to know which has the deeper black. --- In QuadtoneRIP@yahoogroups.com, Terry Ritz <t.ritz@...> wrote:
