Getting QTRqui to start

Getting QTRqui to start

2013-02-01 by efisha39

I've been running Roy Harrington's QTRqui on my ASUS Notebook G73Jw
using Windows 7 (64-bit) for over a year now without a problem. Then yesterday (and I know I'm not supposed to write this), it just stopped working -- really, it no longer works. I double click on the icon, it appears briefly on the tool bar and then vanishes. I've tried uninstalling and downloading a fresh copy of both QTR_Setup_2.7.2 and 2.7.0 with the same results. I've even tired to download and install an older version (2.6.2) but the installer says that it "is not commonly downloaded and could harm your computer." So I aborted the installation. Does anyone have any thoughts?

I have zero experience with QTR, et al - just learned of it last week, and
am waiting to be fully vetted onto this list - but I have decades of Windows
experience. If something stops working overnight like that, it is often not
the app that has failed, but an underlying component that the app - QTR in
this case - needs.

The first step in finding these little devils is asking: "What has changed
since it worked?" Since this was such a sudden change that question will be
easier to answer. If you did nothing in the way of software
adds-deletes-updates, then look for things that might have changed by
themselves.

I'm sure you have tried a reboot, but do a full system shutdown, then power
up into Safe Mode. Once Windows is up, shut down fully again. Then do a
normal power up and login. Test. (Note my use of the term "shut down" .
that is not a reboot J )

Check for updates that were installed and try reversing those, one at a
time. Control Panel > Programs and Features, then sort on the Installed On
column. Also check the "View Installed Updates" link.

If System Restore is enabled, try stepping backward through restore points.
(If you are not using System Restore, this won't help for this incident, but
I recommend enabling it. And give it a good amount of room to save restore
points).

Ward, You're a life saver!
I followed your suggestions. The first, the "Safe Mode" ploy, did not work. But the second did. I uninstalled something called "Antilogger SDK version 1.4.6.63" from Zemana Ltd.. which apparently didn't like the QTRgui. Now QTRgui works. Funny thing is, I never loaded this software and I notice on the internet that you have to pay for it and I certainly never did that. Thanks again!

Glad to hear it! I did a little reading about Zemana and its products.
What they say the antilogger is supposed to do seems to match what it did to
your QTR. They are not a company or product line I'd ever suggest to a
client, or even test for myself.

The way these gremlins usually get installed is by a user accidentally
clicking the wrong download or other type of link on a website that has lots
of distracting ads. Others ride in on trivial and harmless seeming little
apps or web sites. My glib guidance to family and friends is: The cuter it
is, the exponentially higher the risk.

Use those system restore points and keep a good strong anti-malware program
running.
