Set Up Help Please

2014-01-24 by lowlevellfa7

I've downloaded Windows version of QTR this afternoon (Version 2.7.0.0), it defaulted to placing the program in Program files x86, I'm on a 64 bit system with windows 7. I haven't altered this.

The Interface loads fine and my Epson 3800 is recognised, however I can't seem to get Photoshop or Lightroom to find the the newly created Quad3800 printer. I've read both the original and updated (2014)user guides but both offer no explanation - indeed the 2014 is a Mac guide and the Interface is different to what I have.

Could someone point me in the right direction as to how Photoshop CC and LR 5.3 'find' the Quad3800.

Thanks in advance
Garry

You cannot use QTR as print driver direct from Photoshop or LightRoom under
Windows. You need to edit the files, save as TIFF, JPEG, and print from the
QTR GUI

Thanks Mike, that's a simple explanation as to why I couldn't find it.

With that in mind how are fine tuning aspects such as the platen gap set for varying paper types given the GUI doesn't seem to have such functionality

Looks like you're trying to follow the Mac instructions. On a PC, Lightroom and Photoshop cannot print through QTR. You need to use qtrgui to print. It should have been included with the Windows download, I think, but if you haven't got a copy of it, you can download it from http://www.sbillard.org/pages/QTRgui. You need Tom Moore's guide from the original QTR download page, which covers use on a PC.

I set my 7880 up through the Windows Control Panel, then printing preferences select the paper type, and other stuff as well as platen gap and then print from QTR

Hope this helps

Hi Paul,

I have bought in 'inksupplycom' the black carbon ink but I didn't know they had the
water glycerol solution to dilute.

Can I make it myself with only destilated water and glycero? Where do I best buy
the glycerol or do I need 99% pure or is the drugstore also ok?

thanks

The MIS generic bases are so cheap, I'm not sure it's worth starting from scratch yourself unless you do a large volume. If you are going to use or make the generic base, use the C6B version unless you are going to print on Arches uncoated watercolor paper with a 1.5 pl printer. Then go to the C6C, which also does fine on inkjet papers.

Dilution base is more than just water and glycerol. The surfactants are critical -- a huge part of the game and where the OEMs use proprietary formulas they are not about to share with us. The OEM products also have biocides in them and use a rather toxic form of glycol. My blends were designed to use safer materials and surfactants that were readily available. The quality of the water appears to also be a factor. Some distilled water is apparently not very pure or has a pH that may be too acidic. If the water sits around for a long time it can absorb carbon dioxide and turn acidic. MIS uses buffered water, I believe. (I did not find it necessary with the distilled water I buy from the local supermarket.)

For the glycerol, I use 99.7% pure from a science supply house. I think I have a link in the ink mixing PDF. Low quality glycerol has also been an apparent issue for a few people. See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Ink-Mixing.pdf

Good luck.

Paul

Ok thanks a lot Paul,

for all the information.
I'll think you're right not to mix it myself,
I just bought 3 pints of c6b with inksupply,
however I find the transportidea is not very 'eco-nor-logical'...

I am curious.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Set Up Help Please

2014-01-27 by Paul Roark

Some in Europe are mixing the generic base using Kodak';s Photo Flo 600, which does have the better but more toxic glycol, but they are having the Edwal LFN shipped from B&H in NY. The possible pH issue has surfaced only with the 3800, where we see some having success but some not. It's not clear what is going on there.

I expect both Photo Flo and Edwal LFN to become even harder to find in the future. I have reverse engineered both and sourced all the inputs to make both of them. Whether MIS/Inksupply.com will start to go that direction is a business decision for them. For individuals to do it is probably not worth the work, as long as the MIS price for the generic base stays as low as it is currently.

I agree that shipping water does not make much sense.

A possible alternative is to use the OCP ink base. I have not tested it, and I'm not sure about it's cost.
