Print Tool and icc profiles

Does anyone know where Print Tool looks for printer icc files in OS X El Capitan?

/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/QTR should work. I think if you go up one directory to Profiles that also should find them.

PrintTool nicely organizes the profiles into different groups, but it doesn't seem to matter if you move them to Library/ColorSync/Profiles or to the alias to the QTR folder there. Photoshop seems to ignore it all together and just lumps all the profiles into a long list when trying to make a custom soft proof setting.

One thing that might not be obvious to new people is that you can rename the ICC profile by opening it in ColorSync Utility and in the second line (1 'desc') change the ASCII Name to something that is easier to read than whatever the file name was for the original measurement file (just changing the file name of the icc profile might not work all the time or show up in all places).

Thanks Richard and Norm - Library/ColorSync/Profiles/QTR did the trick. Do either of you know where to put icc profiles in El Capitan so that PS6 sees them. I've had no luck with that s far.

Hmm - this is what I was struggling with before (see previous posts). Gray scale curves cannot be seen at all in PS 6. Roy has a good explanation in message 13274 “gray photo gray matte printer profiles”.

For RGB profiles, the only way I could get them to appear in PS CC was tweaking the write permissions (chmod a+w) using sudo on the command line. Unless you really know what you are doing, I wouldn’t recommend this as you can get yourself in a lot of trouble.

After a bunch of discussion with everybody, it looks like PrintTool is really the way to go for QTR printing…

You shouldn't need to do any command line trickery with the RGB profiles to get them to show up PS CC.

I just drag them into CurrentOS or MacHD/Library/ColorSync/Profiles and authenticate with your admin password. When I switch right back to Photoshop they are right there in the massive list with all the other profiles (getting rid of those ICCs I'll never use is next on my list).

I know what you mean. When I downloaded some Ebvt-3880 profiles they showed up fine when I coped them into the directory. However, when I created some curves with QTR-Create-ICC-RGB, they weren’t showing up for me after I placed them in the directory. After a lot of mucking around, they finally showed up after I tweaked the permissions. Go figure…

I just use PrintTool now and sidestep the entire issue.

I don't think anything has changed significantly in El Capitan for ICC profiles.

The idea with ICC profiles is that they mostly go into -- /Library/ColorSync/Profiles --
plus any subfolders from there. You'll find a link to the QTR folder in here
so that the ones in QTR show up. The system provides a program to go through
all the appropriate places that ICCs will be found. Print-Tool uses it and I'm pretty
sure Photoshop uses it so things should work the same. The big exception is
grayscale ICCs which PS6 and beyond just has chosen not to show. (PS6 does
see them and shows them in Convert to Profile). The ICCs will need at least
"read" permission for everyone. Finally if you put new ICCs into one of the folders
its likely that you'll need to re-start the program (PS or Print-Tool) to go back out and find it.

Richard,

How is your book on QTR going? Is it going to available in the next 4-6 months? We heard about it a lot, then for a few months nothing.

Eh? I don't understand. I can't find a place where greyscale ICCs aren't shown in either PS CS6 or PS CC 2015. Is this an OS X thing (I'm on Windows 7)? LR doesn't show them AFAICT, the PS certainly seems to.

Thanks to everyone who has responded. These are icc profiles from Ilford for their Gallerie Classic Gloss paper. Dragging them to CurrentOS or MacHD/Library/ColorSync/Profiles and authenticating them still doesn't get them to show up in PS6 when I use Photoshop manages colors. I did get them to show up in Print Tool by putting them in the CurrentOS or MacHD/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/QTR folder as suggested in a previous post. I've got a post on the Adobe Community Forum too, but no satisfactory answer yet.

Re: Print Tool and icc profiles

Sandy,

Sorry for such a long delay in response. I've been a little busy for the last few weeks with family around the holidays and then catch up work. I just haven't been keeping up on forums very much...

About the book:
In short, the last 6 months have been hectic and the book got pushed to the back burner. I've been plugging away at it, but I haven't been able to focus on it like it needed. The bones and all the Mac stuff is basically done, but I am translating it to the Windows QTRgui now and figuring out how to work around the Windows 10 issues (which seem to be minor).

I decided to go ahead and add a whole section on profiling digital negatives based on a method I am using with the Cone inks (but not the piezo digital neg curves). I'm incorporating partitioned toner curves along with the main partitioned gray curve as a way of adding blocking density when needed without needing to change the overall gray curve. I've modified the correction curve tool i created to linearize to the process without needing to use the linearization function, but it does requite using a densitometer, i1 Pro (or the QTR scanner to L*a*b* workflow).

Work is going to settle down at the end of the month and I will be able to finish it off. My fiancé is a medical editor, and is wrapping up some work this week that will allow her to start editing what I have, and I will start to revise and start laying it out mid February and finishing the design and all the extra bonus material in March.

I've set myself a firm deadline of April 12 as a release date, and am putting together a page for people to sign up to get notified when it is available (and pre-order at a discount).I'll make some more noise about that when I post it.

All the best,
Richard Boutwell
