quadtoneRIP in printer queue

2016-01-25 by paulakraus@...

I have just downloaded the quadtoneRip - using mac and printer epson p600.

I can't seem to locate the qtr in my printer queue - I went to system preferences and press + to add a printer but it doesn't show up. I tried the qtr locations both in (applications -QuadtoneRIP) and as (user - library -printers -QuadtoneRIP) any ideas?

Did you read the instructions on how to install?

#Installing a QTR Printer on Mac OS X
Keith, I just reread the instructions that came with installing a new QTR printer. It isn’t unreasonable to find it confusing.

Paula, here is my procedure for installing a new printer.

First you need install the QTR software package. The downloaded zip opens from a standard DMG. If you just try to double click to open the installer it will say that it isn’t from an unidentified developer. You will need to right click (control+click) and then click “open”. Running the installation package will load all the “drivers” for currently supported printers, and will load all necessary files and folders in the correct locations. Now you can move on to installing the printer/print queue.

##To install a new QuadPrinter

- Go to System Preferences > Printers and Scanners
- Make sure the printer is powered on and connected. (You can use either USB or a networked printer, but USB seems to be more consistent and reliable. I occasionally have problems with the networked printer not accepting print data or resetting after beginning the print job)
- Click the + button to add a new printer.
- Choose the printer model from the list of connected printers and then click the “Use” drop down and click the “Select Software…” option. All the QTR drivers should be visible in that list, and you should be able to scroll down to select “QuadToneRIP 2.7.7 Epson P600” from the list.
- If you do not see that option you will need to make sure the installation was successful by going to library/printers/qtr. If that folder is there, but you don’t see the P-600 as an option make sure you downloaded the latest version from the QTR website.

##Installing the Pre-made Curves
After you create a the printer, you will need to install the pre-made curves.
- Go to Applications/QuadToneRIP/Profiles/P600-UC and double click the InstallP600.command script. That will create .quad files (curves) for all the Ink Descriptor Files (profiles) in that folder. It will also update/install any .quad files located in the currentOS/Library/Printers/QTR/QuadTone/QuadP600 folder (while you are there, drag that QuadP600 folder to the side bar in your Finder window, or make an alias to it and put in on your desktop).

You should be good to go from there.

Hope that helps,
Richard Boutwell

Hi Richard,

I didn’t mean the question to be sarcastic. I hope Paula didn’t take it that way. Roy’s Tutorial may not be fine literature but I don’t think it is all that confusing. I’ve been using QTR almost since it was born and have never had trouble with installation.

I should have elaborated, and would have if Paula had responded, that installing QTR is different than installing the Epson driver. It is done via the installation script as noted in the Tutorial, rather than through System Prefs.

But I am a little confused by what you have written. Maybe something has changed, but I don’t think that your 2nd section - ##To install a new QuadPrinter - is necessary at all. I’ve never installed a QTR printer through System Preferences > Printers and Scanners. What you have written in your 3rd section - running the installation script - does all that automatically and is all you need to do.

Why do you think it is necessary to install via System Prefs? I’m not trying to be difficult, it’s a serious question.

Regards,
Keith

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] quadtoneRIP in printer queue

Keith, you are right. I just tested it with one I have connected via USB at home, and it worked just fine. I don't know why I thought you needed to add the printer via system prefs. I might be remembering an older version where that was necessary, or just "because that is the way I've always done it" things.

Just adding the printer from the install script works fine if you are connected from USB, but I wanted to see exactly what happens if you try doing it with a bit of a custom set up, or if you have networked printers.

If you look near the top of terminal window after running the installation script says "Creating printer named: QuadP800 as Direct USB Printer", even if you are connected via ethernet.

This is maybe getting a little to complicated for most people who are just printing via USB, but I know I have banged my head against the wall in the past trying to get a networked printer to function properly, and the only way I could get it is by doing the following:

To use a networked printer you need to add the printer is system preferences using Bonjour and then name the printer what you will call it from the install script. In my example I added the P800 as a bonjour printer, and then named it QuadP800-MinorWhite. I selected the QuadToneRIP 2.7.7 Epson P800 as the software to print with and hit ok. Then I created a new folder in the applications/QuadToneRIP/Profiles called P800-MinorWhite, and moved and changed the name of the P800 install script to IntallP800-MinorWhite.command. Then I moved some profiles and ran the script. It created the printer and created the curves. If you don't add "quad" to the name in system prefs to Quadxxxx it will still create a new printer and load the curves, but it will add it as a USB printer and it will say it isn't connected when you actually go to print.

Other people might have different experiences and slightly different ways of going about this. What I did isn't too complicated, but I'd love to hear an easier way.

All the best,
Richard Boutwell

Thanks - I think I got it figured out - was downloading from a wifi connection - when I downloaded at my work which is tethered it worked as intended. Now I just have to drag my computer to a hardwire location to download at home (saving the one I downloaded at work on a thumbdrive and loading it also did not work)Thank you for your imput.Paula
