Problem Installing A Profile Using QTR 2.7.7 & El Capitan (SIP Issue)

Problem Installing A Profile Using QTR 2.7.7 & El Capitan (SIP Issue)

2016-01-26 by Charlie Baggett

Thanks to help from Richard and Roy, I was able to print Inkseparation images
for linearizing my K7 inks to use in making digital negatives. I printed
several inkseparation images at different ink limits to get the density range
I desired. Densities were measured with an X-Rite 361T UV densitometer.
Insertion points for the inks were calculated using an Excel math program and
then transferred to a .txt profile. When attempting to run the install file to
create and save the .quad file, I got an error message stating that the file
could not be saved in the /Library/Printers/QTR/Quadtone/Quad7600-K7 folder
because permission was denied. This is due to El Capitan's SIP function.

I can disable SIP and allow the action. However, I thought this problem was
solved in version 2.7.7. I am pretty sure I installed it before I installed El
Capitan. It is also possible I am mistaken on when I installed El Capitan. In
a post on removing files on Nov 3, Richard provided the following string as
the site where the files were relocated under SIP as
/Library/SystemMigration/History/Migration-(some UUID)/QuarantineRoot/. I went
to this location and found nothing intelligible- to me at least. I took this
to mean that no files had been relocated, e.g; I installed El Capitan after
QTR 2.7.7. I may be confused on that as well.

My question is: can I fix this so that I don't have to disable SIP every time
I want to add a profile? Thanks in advance for any illumination.

Cheers,

Charlie

I got that too when installing new printers after updating, but that isn't an El Cap SIP issue. It seems to just be a simple permissions setting for the quad folder.

Navigate to the quadxxxx-k7 folder, right click and get info (or just command+I) and change permissions to read and write for the admin user account (I chaged it for all three user account I have there). I'm not sure why that changed but it took me a minute to sort it out when I first ran into that. I should have posted something about it then, but I was too eager to set up the new printer and completely forgot about getting back to it.

Hope that fixes it

Richard,

Thanks for the quick response. My quad7600-k7 folder is at the end of the
string starting at library/printers/QTR etc on my boot drive. When I went to
that location and right clicked for Get Info I was not allowed to change the
permissions. That's why I assumed it was a SIP problem. I must be doing
something wrong. Suggestions?

FYI: You'll want to do this (procedure listed in previous comments) every time you install a new (or edited) curve.

It is a permissions issue, doesn't always effect El Capitan but I'm seeing it every time w/ El Capitan right now. I'm currently in testing of QTR and 10.10 at InkjetMall (Piezoland)

happy printing all,
Walker

Charlie,

Did you click the little lock icon at the bottom right of the info window? You're be prompted to enter your password and then you can change the permissions. Then relock afterward... After doing that one you shouldn't need to change again. I found that I needed to change the permissions for any printer I added/installed after upgrading to El Cap, but printers that were there before upgrading were fine. Weird right.

Richard,

Thanks. That worked. I had overlooked the little lock. Too much snow removal
over the last 4 days ;-).

El Capitan has several new security features that can trip you up.

The SIP issue is pretty major but QTR driver 2.7.7 moves some of the files to
a more acceptable location. If you upgraded with an older QTR driver installed it will
run the old way. The better thing to do though is upgrade QTR driver first to 2.7.7
then upgrade to El Cap. (its not horrible if you don't but it may end up appearing
like you have duplicate drivers like both 2.7.6 and 2.7.7 -- in fact its really just 2.7.7).

Permissions in the folders with the .quad files is another potential problem. If you
have a folder with insufficient permission you may have to manually change it.
But I think in most cases re-installing the main .pkg will fix it for you.

The persistence of this permission issue I think is due to using older install scripts.
This is particularly likely with Piezo because the install scripts are usually included
in the download of profiles. Ideally the install scripts should match the QTR version --
and this is what happens in the last several versions. (I'm not completely sure
but I think 2.7.2 and before are the "older" scripts giving trouble). Upgrading to
all new scripts would be best -- people should also upgrade their QTR driver too.

That is for sure. I have been working with Macs since the 1980s and the El Capitan upgrade has given me more headaches than I ever remember with any system. I upgraded to El Capitan before upgrading to QTR 2.7.7, and wound up having to spend several hours with permission issues. Essentially I was unable to install any new profiles with SIP enabled. I wound up having to reboot the OS in Recovery mode to disable SIV in order to change the permissions.

Eventually got all of the permission issues involved, then decided to upgrade to 2.7.7. OK, I am still trying to figure out how to open the .dmg file in El Capitan. I opened the .dmg on another machine with Yosemite and ported the file to the El Capitan machine and it installed OK. But when I go to Get Info there does not appear to be any Version number now attached to QTR.

My suggestion for those thinking of upgrading to El Capitan is wait until you have plenty of time on your hand because you are going to need a lot of it with all of the problems it may cause.

. . . I have been working with Macs since the 1980s and the El Capitan upgrade has given me more headaches than I ever remember with any system.

I agree. Even after several updates, I’m having an unusual number of crashes/hangs. It is getting better, though.

The release notes for 2.7.7 are about El Capitan compatibility:
This is a Mac OSX only release specifically for OSX El Capitan compatibility.
El Capitan prohibits installations in an area that was used by QTR so this update moves
those files to a permitted area.

It's recommended that you update QTR to 2.7.7 before updating your OSX to El Capitan.
This cleans out the old locations while access is still permitted. If you don't QTR still
will work just fine but if you Add Printer in System Preferences it will appear that 2.7.6
is still installed -- in fact this will point to new code but the 2.7.6 may be confusing.

. . . decided to upgrade to 2.7.7. OK, I am still trying to figure out how to open the .dmg file in El Capitan.

If El Capitan won’t let you open the .dmg file, go to System-Preferences / Security-and-Privacy, and look at the bottom half of the box. If you just failed with a .dmg file, there will be a message explaining that it was not from the right sort of developer and giving you the option to “Open Anyway”. Click on that and the blocked .dmg file will open.

If you upgraded to El Capitan before updating to QTR 2.7.7, you can either live with the (harmless) misidentification referred to in the second paragraph of the release notes, or you can turn off System Integrity Protection (SIP), find and delete the QTR files in the system area, and then turn on SIP when you are finished. I assume that you could install QTR 2.7.7 while SIP was disabled, and that the installation would take care of clearing out or moving the old files. (I haven’t tried this, though.)

On a “clean” installation of El Capitan, QTR 2.7.7 installed without a hiccup, as did installing support for the Epson 3880 UC.

The problem I had with opening the dmg file appears to have solved itself after I discarded the file and downloaded it a second time, so this at least was not caused by El Capitan, nor by the developer restrictions.

I disabled SIP and re-installed QTR 2.7.7. This step appears to have solved the printer naming issue.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
