Prints Smudging

2016-07-13 by saltaylorkydd@...

Hello,

I am printing using QTR with an Epson R2000 on Premium Luster paper. The ink doesn't seem to be drying and is still smudging even after drying overnight. Am I missing a step? I have glossy paper selected as my media type and the profile I have selected QTR RGB Photo Paper.

Any help appreciated!

thanks,

Sal

Hi Sal,
I hate to say it but I suspect user error. Last year, I was very frustrated with a similar problem. Spent a lot of time trying to clean my Epson 2200 and used too much expensive paper. Happened to stop by my favorite photo store and was told the default cause is using the wrong side of the paper. Damned if he wasn’t right! I was using Canson paper which doesn’t look too different on either side. To confirm this I put a drop of water on the side I had originally used. It just sat there. Going to the other[correct side] side the drop absorbed instantly. My print also worked beautifully.

Arnold

Hi Sal,

What Arnold said about being sure you are using the correct side of the paper is a good suggestion. If that is not it, The next thing would be to be sure the printer is using Photo Black, not Matte Black. It should do this automatically since you have chosen a media type that requires it, but I’m not sure about this particular printer.

Re: Prints Smudging

If this is Matte Black (MK) I have experienced this same problem on my Epson R1900. The Matte Black ink does not bind well no matter which side of the paper you use or what kind of paper it is. I have used two approaches to solving this. My first method was to spray the print with fixative. This solves the smearing but involves an extra step, and I detest aerosols. A better solution was to add a GL (gloss) curve to match the MK curve (Copy curve from: MK; I set the GL limit about 10% higher than MK). This adds just enough of the glosser to bind the Matte Black without giving a noticeable gloss. I use this on both glossy photo paper and matte papers (usually watercolor paper). Cheers!

Hello,

Thanks for the feedback. I am definitely using the right side - this is Epson Premium Luster and it's very obvious.

Adding the fixative is what I ended up doing but I agree it's not a good solution.

Would you mind explaining how to add the GL curve? Is that in PS or in the printer driver QTR dialog? Am fairly new to all this!

Thanks so much!

Hi Sal,

As mentioned by others, the issue is using MK matte ink on the
glossy/photo paper. The builtin curves use the MK ink (Media Type does
not change this, nor does the ICC profile you pick)

I don't have any curves for PK ink but you might be OK just making a copy
of a existing curve, changing the MK to PK in a few places and running that.
Ideally they should be re-linearized but try as is.

Not sure I am the best person to explain adding the GL curve as I am a rank amateur with QTR. I am a trial-and-error kinda guy, just kept tweaking the curve until I got what I wanted. I have posted one of my QIDF files and a screen shot of the dialog at:
http://appce.com/mail/QTR.zip
You may be able to open the QIDF file in Curve Creator; I use the Windows version, don't know if Mac is the same. BTW, this curve gives a very high contrast print on my R1900.

Thanks for all the help. Once I get back to this I'll experiment - or turn to matte paper! :)
