Custom Curves installation issue

Custom Curves installation issue

2016-07-19 by Peter Hingle

I sent this to Ron Reeder as well but maybe I can get my problem solved in the forum.

Reading your book Digital Negatives and building curves for QTR as you teach them. I duplicate the file and rename it plus make sure it is a .txt file. My problem is getting them installed. I put them in the proper printer profile and with the printer attached run the installation but they never show up. I've removed the printer from the print list before running the installation. Tried everything I can think of with no success. I've tried on both my R3000 and my 7800.

I get this during the Terminal installation process but I get it on all of the profiles. I made a copy of one to show you my issue.

Couldn't open /Library/Printers/QTR/quadtone/Quad7800/UCmk-EpsEnhMatte-Sepiacopy.quad for writing: Permission denied

The other thing that is puzzling to me is when I follow your instructions to see if it is in the Library there is no QTR in the library only the Epson listing for the printers. I've deleted and re-downloaded Quadtone but it never shows up in the Library only Applications.

Hope you can help thanks.

I'm on a Mac 10.11.6 El Capitan

Thanks again,
Peter

Make sure you are using the most recent version of QTR, including the profiles. El Capitan and later versions of OS X prevent you from writing to many system areas that used to be available. I think the latest QTR update resolves the issue. At any rate, there was considerable discussion on this group about the problem a while back.

Even with the update to the new version of QTR and El Cap I've needed to go into the library/printers/qtrquadtone folder and then into the Quad7000, hit command+i to get info and change the permissions (you will probably have to click the little lock on the bottom right of the get info window, enter your admin password and change the permissions to read and write for. It been a while since I had to do this, but I think I needed to change the quadtone and each of the quadxxxx printer folders I was trying to write to.

Here is an Apple support page about how to do this:

I'm going to sleep on it for now but I cleared out all previous QTR deleted all my printers. Downloaded the latest Epson drivers off the Apple site. Made sure R3000 loaded as Epson printer. Installed a newly downloaded version of QTR which installed in application and allowed me to install QTR3000 as a printer but it did not install in the Library. Ron Reeder tells me if it doesn't load in the Library you are kinda screwed. What is blocking it from loading in the Library? The Epson Stylus R3000 loaded into the Library. I'm sure this is an El Capitan issue that I9;m trying to decipher.

Thanks for the help, I understand the preferences issue and unlocking them for reading and writing,

Peter

Hi Peter

Judging by your two posts, I think the first thing is I think you are looking in
The wrong library. It's not the one in your home folder, it's the one from the
the top level disk - start from your MacintoshHD or whatever it's called.
Whenever you see a path starting with / that always means top level.

Second, the main issue is a permissions error - your error message.
It means either the file itself or most likely the enclosing folder does not have
write permission. ElCap seems to show this more often. The main QTR driver install
Usually sets this but you can do it manually by going there and changing
Permission to read&write for Everyone.

Okay we are good. Just bought this Mac Powerbook and I';ve owned Apples my whole life but they exasperate me sometimes. Realized my HD Icon was missing. Turns out you need to go to Finder Preferences and select the box to show your HD Icon. In there I found the other Library and QTR is in it. R Reeder explained to me how to put a custom curve in from there if it doesn't load with the Install in QTR. This is all coming about because of my foray into Pt/Pd. Comparing QTR with PDN with Piezo DN. Ron's teaching regarding the QTR method seems to resonate better with me but I'm still a freshman and have a long way to go. At least the Lightbox is finished and passed its first test with flying colors.
