My Print Tool will not print on my Epson 3800. Please help!

2017-06-06 by petercasten@...

Hi Everyone,

I’m just getting started with digital negatives for carbon prints and recently downloaded the Print Tool, but I can not get it to print. I am using a MacBook Pro with Sierra and an Epson 3800 Stylus Pro printer. I have followed all of the Print Tool directions in trying to print the 21 step wedge, but when I hit the print button, the printer acts as though it is going to print by accepting the Pictorico film and getting it into position to print, but then after 10-15 seconds, it sends the film out without anything printed on it.

I used QTR successfully a few years ago with the same Epson 3800 printer to create digital negatives directly from Photoshop. At that time, I believe I may have been running Lion and something like QTR version 2.4. But I have not printed with QTR in several years.

I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Sierra while QTR 2.4 was in my applications folder. Today, I upgraded my QTR to the current version of 2.7.7, but am still unsuccessful in getting the print tool to work.

In the Print Tool, I have the following selected:

Printer: Quad 3800

Paper and Print settings: Quadtone RIP

Mode: Quadtone RIP 16 Bit

Curve 1: Carbon 100

Curve 2: None

Curve 3: None

Paper feed: Sheet Feed

Resolution: 2880

Speed : unidirectional

Black ink; Photo ink

By the way, my printer works fine when I make regular color digital prints directly from photoshop. So it is not an issue with the printer, and the printer is obviously communicating with the Print tool, because when I hit the print button, it accepts the Pictorico film into position as though it is getting ready for printing.

I am wondering if there is some incompatibility due to my previous version of QTR, and if I need to uninstall and then re-install QTR 2.7.7. If I do need to uninstall and then re-install QTR and/or the Print Tool, I have no clue how to do it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Peter

This isn't terribly unusual. Did you try simply reloading the film and pushing load (the down arrow) the down arrow on the panel?

Cheers,
Keith

Keith,

Thanks for your question.

Yes, I tried reloading the Pictorico numerous times in both the top sheet feeder and rear sheet feeder. It does not appear to be a problem with the Pictorico being misaligned upon entry into the printer, because the printer pulls the Pictorico into the printer properly as though it is going to print, but then waits about 15-20 seconds, and then the Pictorico exits through the front of the printer as a normal print would exit, except with nothing on it. During the 15-20 second waiting period, if I click on my printer icon at the bottom of my screen, I can see information is being transmitted as the percentage goes from 0-100% before the printer discharges the Pictoric with nothing on it.

In my experience, when the Pictorico enters the printer from the top sheet feeder misaligned, the printer immediately passes the film through the printer and an error message appears. I've had that problem many times in the past and I know it well, but my current problem seems to be a different one.

Thanks,

Peter

Hi Peter, I've had this happen with my p600 printer and the problem was something in my qtr profile I did incorrectly. I can't remember exactly what it was? Missing quotation marks or missing equal sign in the curve or too long a name something like that. Have you tried a different qtr profile to see if that works?

Erik

Hi Peter,

I see - it seems what you are experiencing is different than what happens to me now and then. This does sound like something I've seen before, though. Erik's suggestion may be on the right track. If you copy and paste the contents of the .txt file here, maybe someone will spot a problem.

Cheers,
Keith

Problem solved!

I tried and old palladium profile I used in the past and the Print Tool worked perfectly. I never thought about the fact that it could be a problem with my carbon 100 profile.

Many thanks to Erik and Keith.

This is most likely an issue with a curve.

I suggest re-installing QTR as the first bet, and then looking through your curves for anything funny, and re-installing them properly.

Peter,

The most likely cause for this problem would be either a naming issue for the file (too many characters or use of an illegal character in a file name), or the use of an illegal .txt type.

In the future check to make sure that the .txt file was actually installed as a .quad file. To do this, go Library>Printers>QTR>Quadtone>QuadPrinterName and verify that there is a .quad file there that corresponds to the name and date of installation.

Thank you Sandy.

I'm not sure where I messed up installing the carbon 100 profile, but I'll check on it when I'm back at home. It seems I remember the quad file did show up in the Library. I'm looking forward to your carbon printing classes at Photoforumlary next month.
