What inks are you using? What print engine are you using?

Hey Ralph,
I use CS3 and the ink is the regular Genuine Epson Ink
for Epson Stylus Photo 2200 341, 347, 342, etc.

Ralph Getting good B with the Epson standard inks is not easy! In
Europe Epson bundled some software called Gray Balancer with the 2100
incarnation of the printer. This was not available in the USA, although
I have read somewhere on a forum site that you can download the software
from Epson's Russian site, and use it with a Kodak greyscale. You can
read a good description of Gray Balancer in Vincent Oliver's review of
the 2100, on http://www.photo-i.co.uk/Reviews. In my 2100 I use MIS
Ultratone 7 inks - this is probably the easiest way to get good B.

Ken

You state that your print engine is CS3. Just to make things clear to all,
please confirm that you are printing through QuadtoneRIP. This is a
QuadtoneRIP list, afterall, so one would assume that's the case. If that is
the case and you are using Epson UC ink, give us an example of a curve and
paper combination that you have tried that gives the colour cast. How severe
is the colour cast.

Many people (myself included) have used QTR with Epson ink with "reasonable"
results. People who do move to other reduced gamut inks do so as much for
their archival properties as for esthetic reasons.

Hi Tom,
I have just started printing B&W on the 2200. I have
tried a variety of settings, etc. I have downloaded
the various paper profiles and yet I'm getting a color
cast on all B&W-some more than others. I DO NOT have
any RIP software. Everything I got came with the
Epson printer.

Perhaps I should ask the question: What steps are
needed to get good B&W with the 2200 without
purchasing software that cost $400-$500?
Thanks for your help, Ken

Before we induce a coronary in Roy, please note that QTR is not free.
It is free to download to try out but if you decide to keep it, you
need to pay USD50. For that price it is an excellent buy.

As one who has produced and marketed software myself in the past (not
photography-related), I feel it is tentamount to theft to download
this software, keep it and not pay.

Definitely try QTR. It limits color use to just LM and LC and produces
neutral prints that you can control the tone of from warm to cool. Try it
and see if you are happy with the smoothness. Beyond that you will need to
think about MIS or Piezography products.

Well, you could try QuadtoneRIP. Trying it costs you nothing but your time.
If you like it, the fee is $50, so it's lots less than the $400-$500 you
reference.

Hello Ken

as to your question pertaining to the Epson 2200; when printing B&W
out of the box using Photoshop CS3
There is no problem with CS3

I had the same experience with a light color cast appearing in the image.

This was a problem with the 2200 and one of the reasons it was
replaced by the 240o. It is not possible (at least in my experience

The solution to your problem is purchasing the QTR rip software and
profiles as well as a set of B&W inks. I suggest the Piezography K7
but there are others.

I have recently done the same although I am now attepmting to learn
the QTR software
good luck
Paul

Quadtone RIP. Free download, $50 if you like it. Works great with the 2200.

Thanks Paul
I was afraid that was the answer.
I'll give the QTR rip software a quick try. But I'm
aiming on a new printer.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Epson 2200...2400

2007-07-28 by David Miller

I've just installed QTR and Piezography on an Epson
2400 and have had no problems getting it to work.
It's judged better than my 4800 using ABW by other
photographers who tell me they can see subtle details
and differences.

You can often get good deals on Epson reconditioned
2400s on their website if you Google it that way.
Sometimes it doesn't show up there directly...?

I like this combination because you can (allegedly)
switch inks back and forth without flushing as well, a
major cost savings and you're not giving up a color
printer. Other than the printer, your investment is
about $200 for the b&w system including QTR and a set
of inks from B&H. It was prohibitively expensive to
convert my 4800 back and forth so I use it for color
and for Museo Silver Rag and Hahnemuhle Pearl.

Epson 2200

2008-03-22 by overmy27objections

I can not get photos to print on my Epson 2200. I recently updated to
QTRgui2.5.2.1. Before updating, I could print. When I found that I
now can not print, I ran QTRcleanout and downloaded and reinstalled
QTRgui2.5.2, then updated again to 2.5.2.1, still no printing. I have
a PC running on Windows XP. Other software prints fine to the
printer. When I run DEBUG no error messages show.
