Is there a way to adjust paper thickness on R2400 in QTR?

On the R2400 the paper thickness is linked to the paper type you select in the driver. There is no longer a physical adjustment you can make on the printer to adjust paper thickness. Would it be possible to adjust this through QTR somehow? I see there is a paper thickness setting somewhere in the CUPS PPD specification linked to paper types, but can't see a way to set it directly. I'd like to experiment with this to try to miniminze banding problems.

In the Epson driver there is access to a thick paper setting but I can't find an access in QTR. I get very fine micro banding on glossies and it almost looks like the print head may be making contact with the paper.

This isn't quite general but the "Manual (Roll)" selection is set for thicker paper. Roy

Would it be possible to make setting available to set this directly? Either in QTRgui or at least as a parameter to one of the command line programs? Paper thickness can have a huge effect on banding, and it would be great to be able to adjust it directly. --- In QuadtoneRIP@yahoogroups.com, "Roy Harrington" <roy@...> wrote: > This isn't quite general but the "Manual (Roll)" selection is set for > thicker paper.

And for us 4000 users, setting of platen gap would also be appreciated. --- In QuadtoneRIP@yahoogroups.com, "danielstaver" <daniel@...> wrote:

On the 4000 I'm pretty sure you can set the platen gap on the front panel of the printer. The R2400 and R1800 are a bit more vague as far as any adjustments for paper thickness or platen gap. The Epson driver has a "thick paper" checkbox hidden in a strange place but there's no indication of what that does or how I could set it in QTR. The printer manual docs don't mention paper thickness at all. In general this is an area where each printer does things differently making it more difficult for a general solution. On the r2400 I'm pretty sure each paper type is using it's own paper thickness setting. Banding can vary a lot if I change paper types. Usually setting a thinner paper type will help. I actually have to use the service utility and set PF adjustment (horizontal alignment) to +20 to get rid of banding in QTR. On 0 (which works fine in the Epson driver) I get large dark overlapping bands in QTR. The Epson driver still has less banding even with this setting. --- In QuadtoneRIP@yahoogroups.com, "Roy Harrington" <roy@...> wrote: > > On the 4000 I'm pretty sure you can set the platen gap on the front > panel of the printer. > > The R2400 and R1800 are a bit more vague as far as any adjustments for > paper thickness > or platen gap. Roy, Yes, the 4000 permits definition and recall of "custom paper configurations" from the front panel. However, these manual settings override the driver configurations. Why is this an issue? Well... if you routinely switch between QTR/B&W and Epson/color... and use different papers/thicknesses/platen gaps for B&W and color... then you must be *very* careful to keep your wits about you and make sure that you have the correct manual (for QTR/B&W) or driver (for Epson/color) settings before pulling the trigger. I guess what we'd like is the ability - within the QTRgui interface - to specify paper thickness and platen gap... much as we can now specify paper size, media source, media type, resolution, speed, and black ink. If we could *completely* specify the QTR configuration as a "preset" - similar to what we normally specify to the Epson driver as a "custom setting" - then we could avoid the 4000 front panel interface altogether - which would be a Good Thing. This would simply be another small step forward toward making the entire B&W/color workflow nearly seamless and error free. The fewer goofy parameters we must regurgitate - print after print - the better, don't you think? TIA for your consideration of these suggestions.
