dpgoldenberg33's Epson 1400/UT-14 quad files. How to make neutral?

2009-06-06 by mabel.sound

Hi there--I am having great luck with David's .quad files for the Epson 1400 and UT-14 inkset, and want to try to make a few for neutral prints as well--about the degree of warmth you'd get from the BO settings. But I can't open these files in Curve Creator--I change the extension to .qidf, then try to open the file from CC, but all I get is error messages: "Error in ink description at line X-> '0'" over and over again, then "Too many errors in ink description," and it won't open for editing.

If anyone can help me out, that would be great. I like the BO method and will probably use it often, but would love a neutral curve for matte paper so that I can use the whole inkset sometimes as well. Alternately, if somebody can just generate some neutral curves for David's set, I would be overjoyed...I am in danger of getting lost in the details here and just want to print!

Thanks--
a new user--
John.

I'm not sure which curve files you are referring to. If it is the files in
the QuadtoneRIP group section for the 1400 printer, then those files include
a folder called inkDescFiles-UT14. In that folder are the qidf files.
However, the files have been created on a Mac, I think, and have the
extension ".txt". If you're on a Mac too, someone else will have to help you
use them. If you're on a PC, which it seems you are, then you can open those
files using the QTRgui curve creator by using file open and setting the file
type to all. Once you do that you will see the .txt files and can open them.

The .quad files can't be opened in the curve creator.

Hope this helps.

Thank you, Tom--yes, those are the ones I meant. I misunderstood which files were the ones that Curve Creator could open. I'll try the text files tomorrow.

Forgive me, the technical aspects of doing this are a little obscure to me, though I have read your user guide. What exactly do I need to adjust in order to create a warmer or cooler curve than the ones provided?

John

Actually, for what you're trying to do, it sounds like you don't need to use
the curve creator at all. You can create various degrees of warm or cool by
blending the warm and cool curves using the QTRgui interface. To do this
just choose two curves (warm and cool for example) an the Curve Setup and
then use the slider in the Curve Blending section to select the degree of
cool or warmth you wish.

You can also combine the warm or cool with the BO curve.

Of course, if you want something warmer than the warm curve or cooler than
the cool curve, that's when you would have to start learning about the curve
creator.

Oh, perfect--thank you! Now I see the logic of only providing warm and cool curves...sorry to be so thick about this. I was overthinking. I'll give this a shot today...

Re: dpgoldenberg33's Epson 1400/UT-14 quad files. How to make neutral?

John,
I'm very pleased to hear that someone has found these curves useful!
As Tom says, all that you need to do is use QTR to mix the warm and cool curves. That is really the beauty of QTR. Basically, the cool curves use only the cool inks and the warm curves use only the warm inks. There isn't any easy way to get more extreme tones.

To my taste, 75% cool + 25% warm gives "neutral" on matte paper or on Kirkland glossy. The other paper I use is Ilford Gold Fiber Silk, which has a fairly warm tone itself. On this, I use 90% cool, 10% warm as my neutral.

Good luck,
David

Hi David,
When you refer to the warm and cool curves and the 75% and 25%
mixture between the two, would that mean a 75, 25 mixture across
the highlights, midtones, and shadow sliders or have I made a
wrong assumption.

Thankyou Alan.

Yes, I use the same mixture across the full tone range, though there is no reason not to try split toning. I just haven't felt the need.
