Printing glossy photos CS5 / OSX 10.6.4 / QTR 2.7.0 / QTR_RGB_Photo_Paper.icc

Printing glossy photos CS5 / OSX 10.6.4 / QTR 2.7.0 / QTR_RGB_Photo_Paper.icc

I have done a few searches on my problem, but haven't seen anything that deals with my specific issue. I am running a MacPro with an Epson 1400 and the software shown in the subject line. Since upgrading to CS5 my prints on matte paper (with the QTR icc) have seemed to be fine, but I just tried printing on glossy paper using a profile that I built some months ago - it was working fine until either / both of my updates to Photoshop CS5 and OSX 10.6.4.

On glossy paper I get weird posterization of midtones and incorrect midtones when I print with the QTR RGB icc (the source photo is in ProPhoto RGB). I have tried assigning the QTR profile, then either saying 'printer controls color' or matching the print profile icc to the embedded icc in the file.

Nothing seems to work. I also tried printing from ImageNest, in case CS5 was the problem, but I get the same symptoms.

The odd thing is that the matte paper prints seem to be fine (although I will need to go over them with a fine-tooth comb to be sure...).

Is this a fatal problem with OSX?

Many thanks for your attention,
Kirk

There is a problem in that CreateICC profiles are not being applied to the image data as it gets to QTR. Seems like a CS5 problem although I haven't tested it in CS5/10.5.8

So far I have had no replies to my own queries on the subject. Further tests by other printers might be in order?

All the best,
Walker

In an answer to some questions I had asked back in August, one tidbit stood out.
"You can create an ICC for softproofing in Windows. ICC's are only for
softproofing in Windows not for printing. You must use QTR curves for printing." That might answer your ICC problem.

Thanks folks. But I have been using the suggested workflow, which is to print a BW RGB image using the canned QTR icc's - QTR_RGB_Matte_Paper.icc and QTR_RGB_Photo_Paper.icc. It is the latter that seems to causing a problem. My understanding from the documentation is that you need to print with these icc's in order to get a good match between screen and print (which is one of the real strengths of the QTR software).
