Problem: QTR cuts paper too short

Problem: QTR cuts paper too short

2005-09-07 by santacruztacean

QTR 2.1 (or 2.3), OSX 10.3.9, 7600 UC

I'm having a problem w/ QTR, using roll paper and auto-cut - i.e. if I
print a 7" high image on 8.5x24 paper size, the auto-cut will cut the
paper at 8" instead of 8.5". It wants to always trim the paper 1/2"
below the image, regardless of the paper size that I specify. The only
way I have gotten around this problem is to make the PS image size
larger, which increases the file size. I don't have this problem when
using the Epson driver. Anyone else having this problem?

Note: If I turn auto-cut off, then I waste about 4" of paper between
prints, which is also not acceptable.

QTR doesn't support borderless prints and the standard bottom margin
is .55 inches.

Roy -

Thanks for replying. However, I'm not making borderless prints. If I
print an image 8x23, on 10x24 paper, with a top margin of .5", I
expect to have a bottom margin of 1.5" on 10x24 paper. Instead, the
paper will cut to 9x24", .5" below the image.

This happens even if I specify a 1.5" bottom margin when I create the
custom paper size. This happens when I use QTR, but not when using the
Epson driver. Any clues why I'm having this problem?

I guess I mis-understood at first.
I don't use roll paper nor have a 7600 so it's hard for me to test. QTR and
Epson driver are completely separate so its likely they are different.

My suspicion is that somehow the Custom Paper Size or Page Setup is the
issue. I would create the custom size with the default margins -- .25 top
and .56 bottom. Make sure you Format For the correct printer in Page Setup
and the correct Paper is selected.

Then in Print with Preview of Photoshop position the
image with the extra white space at the bottom. This is the best place to
visually see the paper, margins and image. Verify that the measurements
all add up here.

Yes, I have done ALL of the above. Doesn't work.

I'm really surprised... you don't use roll paper, and don't have a
7600 to test your RIP on?

Are any other QTR users experiencing this same problem?

Well I can simulate the output that is generated for a 7600. I took your original
example -- 8.5 x 24 custom paper, standard margins, print a 7x23in image.
But I can't see anything wrong with the output -- commands to printer say 8.5 in long.

So let me ask a few things. You said the cut happens .5 inch after the image.
Does that mean if you change the size of the image, the size of the paper cut off
varies, too? In other words a 7x23 top margin .5 cuts at 8" and a 6x23 top margin
.5 cuts at 7" ?? And if you add white padding to the 7x23 (expanding to 7.5x23)
it will cut at 8.5 like you want?

If this is what is happening, it really looks to me like a Page Setup error.
The formatting and definition of a page happens before QTR sees any of it.
My guess is the Page Setup has "Format For the Epson driver with Roll Paper" instead of
"Format For Quad7600" but I can't test that.

No, that's not what I'm doing - In Page Setup, I am using "Format for
Quad 7600". (I don't have a choice between "Quad 7600 Roll" or "Quad
7600 Sheet" - just the one "Quad 7600". Is this correct?).

Can anyone else confirm (yes or no) whether they are having this problem?

I was thinking you probably have the Epson Roll Paper driver on your machine.
There is only one Quad7600 but Epson has several drivers.

Is my description that you get different size paper cuts depending on the
image size correct? I.e. is this true:
>> So let me ask a few things. You said the cut happens .5 inch after the image.
>> Does that mean if you change the size of the image, the size of the paper cut off

There's a script in the download called DiagnosticScript. You can run it and it
outputs a bunch of printer info. Using the same Custom Paper size, print with
two different size images. After each printing run the script and cut and paste
the output. Send it to me. It may have some clues.

I recently made a number of prints from 8x10 to nearly 16x20
with many sizes in between. All had margins from 0.75 in
to 2 in. I measured the paper and set up custom sizes
with no margins - ie 0 all around. Then centered the image
using the print preview, or made adjustments on a couple.
Worked flawlessly. This on 7600.

Note that I always used a bit bigger margin than you have
been discussing. Don't know if that's an issue.

Roy - I am sending you the Dignostic Scripts offline.

Thanks
