The mysterious disappearance of Quadtone RIP

The mysterious disappearance of Quadtone RIP

2011-09-29 by Bill Vaccaro

While I was thisclose to finishing a QTR profile (I'm making digital
negatives on Pictorico Premium OHP transparency paper for my alt process
work using Ron Reeder's excellent Digital Negatives book), the Quadtone
RIP dialog box abruptly disappeared. I'm running QTR 2.7.2 on Mac OS X
10.7.1 (Lion) on a MacBook Pro through Photoshop CS5 to an Epson 3800
printer.

Here's what normally happens. I choose Print and get the Print dialog
box. I then choose Quad3800 (i've already loaded my custom QTR profile
through QTR's install.command) and then click on Print Settings. From
there, I get the Quad3800 print setting dialog box. I choose the popup
menu that starts with "Layout" and pick "Quadtone RIP" which then gets
me to the Quadtone RIP dialog box, etc.

Since Tuesday night, the Quadtone RIP choice in the popup menu has
disappeared. I've tried everything. I've de-installed and re-installed
QTR 2.7.2 numerous times. I've even de-installed and re-installed the
entire Adobe Creative Suite CS5. I've tracked down old .plist files from
older versions of QTR and deleted them. I've even made sure to get rid
of the .quad.gz files that are located in that ppd alias file that's
located in the user/library/printer/qtr folder before deleting the
entire qtr folder itself. In a day's worth of deleting and reinstalling,
I managed to get Quadtone RIP to show its face only to disappear once
again once I quit Photoshop before attempting to load the custom QTR
profile that I had been working on.

While I think it may be a Mac Lion problem, I'm just wondering if anyone
else has experienced this same issue, be it on Lion, Snow Leopard (10.6)
or earlier versions of OS X.

In the meantime, I'm in the midst partioning my MacBook Pro's 1TB drive
so I can load Snow Leopard, Photoshop 5 and QTR 2.7.2 so I can continue
to work until this problem is solved.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,

I am having the same problem. I had it with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and 2.7.1. I tried unstalling 2.7.1 and installing 2.7.2...same problem. I am also using cs5 on a Macbook Pro.

Re: The mysterious disappearance of Quadtone RIP

2011-09-30 by Bill Vaccaro

Bob,

I think I finally found the culprit. At least for me.

Turns out that the curve I created had a space in it. When I dragged it into the profile and placed it in front of the line Grey Curve= it caused QTR to stop functioning properly and made the Quadtone RIP dialog box completely disappear.

You can see it here:

#  QuadToneRIP curve descriptor file
# for Epson 3800 using k3 inks with photo black
#  LM turned off
# calibrated for Ziatype process using RR3800-UCmK-Pd as starting point

PRINTER=QUAD3800
CALIBRATION=no
GRAPH_CURVE=yes

N_OF_INKS=8
DEFAULT_INK_LIMIT=100

LIMIT_K=18
BOOST_K=27
LIMIT_C=18
LIMIT_M=18
LIMIT_Y=18
LIMIT_LC=35
LIMIT_LM=0
LIMIT_LK=35
LIMIT_LLK=35

# Describe usage of each ink
# All inks must be listed

# Gray Partitioning Information

N_OF_GRAY_PARTS=2
GRAY_INK_1=K
GRAY_VAL_1=100

GRAY_INK_2=LK
GRAY_VAL_2=33

GRAY_INK_3=
GRAY_VAL_3=

GRAY_INK_4=
GRAY_VAL_4=

GRAY_INK_5=
GRAY_VAL_5=

GRAY_INK_6=
GRAY_VAL_6=

GRAY_INK_7=
GRAY_VAL_7=

GRAY_INK_8=
GRAY_VAL_8=

GRAY_HIGHLIGHT=0
GRAY_SHADOW=0
GRAY_GAMMA=0.8

GRAY_CURVE=/Users/bill/Desktop/Quad3800 files/Ziatype92811-v1.acv

COPY_CURVE_C=K
COPY_CURVE_M=K
COPY_CURVE_Y=K

COPY_CURVE_LC=LK
COPY_CURVE_LM=LK

In this case, the culprit was the space between "Quad3800" and "files". QTR definitely doesn't like spaces. Anywhere.

I replaced the space with an underscore for the name of the folder I was saving it in ("Quad3800_files" instead of "Quad3800 files", deleted the corresponding .quad file and resinstalled. When I opened Photoshop - BINGO! - it miraculously returned.

Hope this helps.

Bill

Bill,

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I do not believe this is the cause of my problem. I was hopeful since our problems seem to similiar.

The profile I created is below. It is a copy of a generic profile from qtr with the LINEAR statement deleted. I was about to print the random step21 grid for profiling when the problem occured.

Re: The mysterious disappearance of Quadtone RIP

Bob,

Try using one of the generic profiles just to see if Quadtone RIP reappears. Then you'll know if it's deleting the LINIERIZE= statement that's the problem.

Have you tried leaving the LINIERIZE= statement in but blank?

Just a thought.

Bill,

I have removed the profile and deleted the .quad file...still no qtr menu.

Frustrated.

Bill,

I recreated the profile but this time I commented out the LINEARIZE statement and the qtr is back and I am printing.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: The mysterious disappearance of Quadtone RIP

2011-10-01 by Roy Harrington

Bill and Bob,

I've been on the road so haven't been able to really investigate the
issue you guys are having.

But from the discussion and some of the info you've sent me it looks
to like processing a
profile with an error of some sort will corrupt one of the internal
files -- making everything inaccessible.

I think the way to get things back is to use SysPrefs >> Print&Fax to
select Quad3800 printer and then delete this
printer. Then go back and re-run Install3800. Running this script
is the key to setting up Quad
printers correctly. In fact I use this rather than the Drop-Profile
script. Just drag a copy of
Install3800.command into your local folder and run that every time you
want of process a profile.
It installs any file with .txt .qidf or .quad in the local folder so
you should have extra .txt files for example.

Re: The mysterious disappearance of Quadtone RIP

2011-10-01 by Bill Vaccaro

Roy,

Thanks for getting back to us. I think we both found out where the errors were coming from and are up and running again. I know in my case, it was a simple syntax error from having a space where none should be. Unfortunately, it took several days of trial and error to figure that one out. At least I know how to check for it in advance.
