Adding a 2nd Power Supply to system?

Adding a 2nd Power Supply to system?

2009-06-09 by legionhwp

I've maxed out my large Cyndustries PS and have a 2nd +/- Motm PS I've wired into my empty six pak. Whenever I've used any other synth (serge, fenix, etc I always used the green ground out on the Cyn PS. What do I need to do to intergrate the new MOTM ps with my existing Cyn/Modcan system?

I have combo/distro cards in all my Sixpaks so I could wire them in series if needed to.

Any suggestions appreciated.

#1 Test it to make sure it makes a clean + and - 15V

#2 Make a cable to connect it properly to the distro card

#3 Test the distro card to double check that voltages are correct

#4 Plug in your modules

#5 Make a drink based with clear rum

Do NOT "add" power in "parallel" with the other power supply. Power supplies aren't passive lead-acid batteries.

That (grounding) was my main original concern. Can someone confirm this one way or another?

If the case is yes can I do that via the sixpaks or should I wire the grounds of the two power supplies directly?

thanks!

Shouldn't there be something about connecting the grounds on the old
and the new supply in this list?

Well, it depends which "ground". The ground on the Cyndustries supply is
likely from the other side of the transformer and not the mains side.
Ideally you would tap off the transformer ground from the side that's
stepped down. This typically would require you to open the other supply if
it isn't furnished and break it out. You could use the mains ground but
that is likely to be full of noise and all sorts of audio nastyness from
everything else in the building. It will provide a common ground but it
also may induce all sorts of hum etc.

Howdy!

If you want to use another brand of power supply that will work as long as
the grounds from the two separate systems are connected.

This has nothing to do with the third wire on the mains plug, and
nothing to do with
grounding to the physical case of the SixPacs themselves.
Not recommended because you will add noise to your system.

Instead, please visit the following link and please see below...

http://www.cyndustries.com/modules_powerdist-FAQ.cfm

(This link is available from either of our power supply pages on the
website).

On the circuit board of each of the power supplies there is a "0 Volts"
center output pin
between the plus and minus 15 volt output pins... This is the Ground
that you do want.

These center pins from each supply need to be connected. For this
reason we have our
famous green banana jack on the front panel of our power supplies, and
Serge has a black
banana jack on their cases.

http://www.cyndustries.com/modules_POWSU_medium.cfm

you can simply plug a banana cable from one power supply to the other.
if your other brand of power supply has no green Grounding jack then you
can simply
add one by drilling a 5/8 inch hole and adding one.

Black is actually the technically correct color, (as seen on the Motm
jack interface panel)
but I chose green as in "red is Right channel" and "Green is Ground" (a
North American
mains standard color).

The green stripe at the bottom of the Banana Cable ordering Page offers
a "Grounding kit"
which should provide everything you need.

Best Wishes and hope this addresses everything!

Cynthia

Thanks (as always) Cynthia! Thanks very helpful. Now I'll need to update the picture of my growing system in a few weeks once everything gets assembled :)

Re: Adding a 2nd Power Supply to system?

2009-06-10 by legionhwp

Thanks (as always) Cynthia. That's very helpful. I have a MOTM PS so it's rock solid and will work perfectly.

Once I get everything assembled and install my other modules I'll have to get a new picture of the system up. It's taking over the basement at this point :)

(Yikes, I meant to say drill a 5/16 inch hole, (not a 5/8 inch one) for
banana jacks).

It's always fun to see pictures of what everyone is doing with their
systems!
