Any loopers users there?

Any loopers users there?

2006-05-28 by Oscar

I have just purchased a looper device (Digitech Jamman) and tried to see
what It could do for me.

One useful thing for me is being able to record tracks "on the fly" thanks to its overdubbing function.
I have recorded some tests: one was the Blade Runner End credits theme. I really love it,
and I will do it for serious soon, but this is a test for the moment:

http://www.thereminhispano.com/blog/mp3/blade_runner_end_credits-ocabeto+Vangelis.mp3

Basically it is the melody plus some noises...

Do anyone here uses any looper device?
Which one/s? And what could you tell us about it/them?

  No hot wiring!

At first I just sprayed repellent on the pitch antenna. However, actually
touching the volume antenna makes the pitch go wild on most Theremins.
Normally this is not audible because when the volume antenna is touched
  it
isn't audible anyway. However, thru a pitch preview one can hear the pitch
changes when touching the volume loop. So, much to my surprise, when bugs
touched the volume loop a pitch jump was audible.

Oh, the amount of the change is directly proportional to the size of the bug.

Hi: I've been using a looping device; one of the functions of my
Line 6 DL4 Delay Modeller. But I suspect your Digitech Jamman does
better. The Line 6 loop function lasts only 14 seconds. How long can
YOU play before the loop starts?

Pamelia Kurstin also uses the Line 6 and she routinely creates
layered loops as part of her performances. I use it for that also.
It's definitely fun to use.

A friend of mine purchased a device called the "Boomerang" on Ebay
for about 250 dollars ( the same price as the Line 6 ) and its
sampling function lasts for about three full minutes, then the loop
begins. I'd love to get one someday.

It seems that whatever the device, the toughest aspect is in the
timing -- being able to get everything in snych, and when necessary,
have the loop's ending match rhythmically with the beginning.

Does yours handle this in any specific way?

Hi brickblad (and other people at the list)

Yes, I met Pam 1 year ago and she recommended me the Line 6 DL4.
I saw her using 2 of them together to get 2 tape-loop-like devices working together like Robert Fripp did.
I loved it and that's why I purchased this looping machine. Of course, she also IS Pamelia, I am far away
to sound like her even having an arsenal of electronic devices.

BTW, isn't she by this list? Pam? :)

About sample storage: the Jamman has as much as you like to have...because it uses
Compact Flash cards. 128MB is the CF card that comes with it and allows you 24min.
I have already bought a 512MB one that will allow me to store up to 96 min of samples.
Instead of samples I am starting to get into full play-a-long songs tracks.

Another friend of mine (Arturo Cid) has the boomerang, but it was himself
who suggested me to buy the Jamman. It seems that the digitech one is
far away from the boomerang and for less price:
unlimited storage (if you buy more cards) and USB connection.

But I want to make the trick that Pam uses, and for that I will need another looping device together
with this. This time I will buy/construct a cheaper one. Any suggestions?

About tempo, each sample gets its own BPM measure. You can teoritecally change it only by changing
its XML file associated in the computer. More about that here:
http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-v0hXHKM0caS5twQf0dizb10-?cq=1&p=58

It is a little bit tricky, as you cannot start by setting a tempo numerically without a computer.
This, and the absence of a MIDI Sync are the big failures of this device.
Anyway, it seems as I have readen that the BOSS RC-20XL , its clone has this same problem.

I'm bret, and I'm a looper.

I've owned the original Lexicon Jamman, boomerang, and a few Oberheim
(gibson) Echoplex Digital Pros.

I love the echoplex pro. It can be used free running, tap to start the
loop recording, tap to close it and repeat at any point in time. 198
seconds of loops, can be broken into a,b,c... parts. Has undo (peel
off layers of loops), reverse and half/double speed playback.
Brothersync allows multiple echoplex pros to sync together, on the fly.
Great sound quality. Syncs to midi. Quantize button presses or not
to loop boundaries. Insert segments over existing loops. Customizable
user interface. Feedback control via footpedal. Can use it's dedicated
footswitch, or programmable midi footswitch like the cheap behringer.

Hey Bret,

yeah, the echoplex seems a good option too.

But the looperlative is the best by far. Beginning with stereo!
I don't want to know its price otherwise... the Jamman seemed to me an excess now.

I will probably get the behringer delay in a future when available, just for delays.
I went to the loopers delight page, but I didn't see the jamman review before, thanks.

Looper extrardinaire, I'd bet. I just looked up the EchoplexDigital
Pro. Unfortunately, at $999.00 it's too rich for my blood. I'll have
to do some saving. It's become so difficult to prevent becoming
addicted to purchasing more bells and whistles.

You can get a used echoplex digital for about $400-$600.
http://search-completed.ebay.com/search/search.dll?sofocus=so&sbrftog=1&from=R10&satitle=echoplex+digital&sacat=-1%26catref%3DC6&fsop=1%26fsoo%3D1&coaction=compare&copagenum=1&coentrypage=search&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D2&sadis=200&fpos=80301&fis=2&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=&so=Show+Items

I like your mantra, but I can't seem to focus on it.

Feature per dollar, the Looperlative seems the winner by a quantum
step, if it works as advertised. It is deep, and I suspect a bit
complicated to learn all the features.

2 echoplex digital can be synced for stereo, but at that price you may
as well buy the looperlative. Then you need a midi pedal, spending
more and more money. It is easy to get caught up in feature creep,
when I start with a basic need (a device to create sound loops).

My main objection to some looping devices is the requirement to define
a bpm and how many beats per measure to them before recording.

My take on loopers is that they are a instant start (tape) recorder,
they don't need to know my tempo and how many beats to the measure. I
start the recording where I want the loop to begin, I close the loop
where I want it to replay from the beginning. What happens within the
loop as far as measures, beats, tempo is my business, not the loopers.
It should act like a piece of recording tape, cutting and splicing
itself instantly, when and where my foot tells it.

Not a tape looper, but enjoying the discussion.

You have reminded me of something I wondered a little while ago and
never resolved.

I was reading up about Delia Derbyshire of the BBC Radiophonic
Workshop, and noted that she had created a loop that stretched the
length of a particularly long corridor. It occurred to me that it
should be possible to feed the tape through a second recorder at the
far end of the loop, which would make for an interesting way to play
rounds, or call and response.

I guess it must have been done, but I didn't find any references to
it. So I was wondering if there were networking loop boxes that could
pass samples between each other, or, to take it a step further
between boxes wired into the internet. Playing with people on
different continents sounds like fun, and it would be neat to have a
loop that stretched around the world|!

That's the way Robert Fripp did it long ago. The second tape machine
played back the delayed signal, and fed it back in a controlled level
to the first recorder, sound on sound.

I'm just glad to hear a reference to one of my heroes. Delia Derbyshire did
amazing things with very basic equipment and much hard and tedious work. Is
there any kind of biography about her anywhere?

The corridor-long loop reminds me of something that John Cage did, but for
the life of me I can't remember what it is.

It's interesting that the terminology ("loop") of the physical tape loop is
now a term for a digital process. I can't imagine why there couldn't be a
world spanning loop!

On a separate note, I was lucky enough to see an eighties icon of looping
and sampling the other day -- Thomas Dolby. His one-man show was great fun
and from what I understand not unlike what he did in the early part of his
career with late 70s/early 80s technology (before he put together a full
band, which I saw ca. 1984). I guess the 25 or so years of progress made it
easier to do what he does, but it's striking what he did before there was
easy and cheap digital technology. And it was great to see some kids who
were local DJs and electronica musicians coming to see him (it was packed)
and paying homage to someone who set the stage for them years before. N.B.,
Mr. Dolby is a consummate musician, which puts him head and shoulders above
many current artists in the sample/techno world.

Cheers,
Vic

Googling her name gives a pretty good set of links. Amazon turns up
nothing, but gives positive results for Radiophonic Workshop -
including The Tomorrow People at amazon.co.uk. (TTP was a kids
science fiction show on ITV - one of their responses to Doctor Who.
Wandering off topic, so was Sapphire and Steel, one of my all time
favourites, but no Delia D involvement. :-( )

Everyone my age in the UK grew up hearing the radiophonic workshop -
it was everywhere on the TV - schools educational programmes were
almost exclusively Radiophonic Workshop, plus the two must-see kids
sci-fi progs, but hardly anyone has heard of DD.

BBC4 did a documentary about the workshop, Alchemists of Sound which
had leaked onto the internet, but it's gone now - apparently the BBC
were not happy about the copyright infringement.
