Akai service manuals + two internal scsi drives

Akai service manuals + two internal scsi drives

2004-08-31 by koppeti

Hi all,

First, I would like to say that this is a very nice community.

Now to my problems ... I recently decided to upgrade the internal,
enormous 40MB hard drive of my S1000HD. At the same time I also
replaced the backlight panel and replaced the floppy drive with a Zip
100MB drive. So far, so good ... Now, I would like to reconnect all
those disconnected cables (the way I labeled the cables turned out to
be quite unsuccessful).

Does anyone know where I can find some service documentation or
schematics for the S1000? Even detailed photos of the interior would
be great. I have not succeeded to get in touch with Akai here in
Sweden or with Akai in Japan.

The other problem: My S1000 is now equiped with two internal SCSI
drives. The internal SCSI cable only has two connectors, of which one
is joined on the SCSI card by soldering. Does anyone have any ideas
how to connect the drives?

Thank you very much.

Regards,

Mattias, Sweden

Hi,

For connecting the internal scsi cable, there is not much you can do
wrong because the internal HD and the ZIP define their ID's through
the jumpers you will find on them. You know this works with a binary
system. Normally there are three jumpers: ID0, ID1 and ID2. Just make
sure that they have a different id.
The scsi cable should have a white mark on one side. That must be
aligned with pin 1 on the scsi connectors.

I have never seen a service manual.

Which other cables must be connected? Normally only the power supply
cables. Let us know. Someone on the list can supply you with some
pictures.

I am going to replace backlight too.. where did you buy it.. I am
planning to buy new one at www.midi-rakete.de

You said you replaced floppy with ZIP drive.. is it possible to use
internal ide ZIP drive that is connected on the same cable where I
have floppy now? This would be great because in my country I can't
find any SCSI ZIP drive.

I can create some photos of my S1100 but I don't have any drive installed.

I got mine here:
http://www.backlights.co.uk/
It arrived quickly (from UK to California).

The backlight was bought at http://www.backlights.co.uk/ . Fast and
reliable service. They also have good installation instructions on-
line.

Well, regarding the Zip drive, the one installed is a SCSI Zip drive,
not ide. I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think it is possible to use
an ide drive in an Akai S1000.

Thank you for kindly offering me your photographic services, but how
much difference is there between the S1000 and the S1100?

Mattias

As I know they are almost the same. S1100 has smpte, digital out, scsi
and effect board by default. Maybe there are some other differences
because OS is not the same.

Hi,

Thanks for the jumper info. But, how do I connect the drives? Only
one connector is available on the SCSI cable, the other connector is
joined on the SCSI card by soldering. Are there any SCSI adapters or
cables out there extending the number of connectors? Is it possible
to integrate 68 pins cables, 50-to-68-pins adapters and so on?

If I manage to collect a service manual, I'll let you know!

Thanks.

Mattias,

I don't know if your cable is long enough to support the two drives. I
so, you could press another connector on the cable (if you're familiar
with that).
Theoretically it is possible to extend the cable, but then you need to
make a scsi cable with two female and a male connector. As you know,
scsi is very sensitive and scsi adapters are easy to break.
