P3 #32 - Almost alive!!

P3 #32 - Almost alive!!

2004-07-24 by philsmillie@yahoo.com

Finally finished building today (still waiting for the panel from a
friend but that's another story!), switched on and... lots of
flashing lights etc, display a bit garbled but life!
When I switched on with func+page I was getting "checksum=F91E"
but when I pressed F1 to boot I still got the garbled screen.. it
seemed to run/stop quite happily. I figured (rightly or wrongly) I
could send the latest OS and it would sort it out.
After struggling with midi-ox (I cant figure it out!) I used
cakewalk to do the dump.. too fast it seems as I got the "BAD DATA!"
message. I then tried to send it from Logic (much slower) but now
when I switch on with func+page I get "CHK FAIL=FAE1". Sometimes I
get "boot flash", so I press F3 - the screen goes blank, I send
the sysex (should I be seeing anything here?) and nothing happens
till I press stop and rewind when I get "BAD DATA!" again.
I hope error FAE1 doesn't stand for F***ed And Expired 1 :-(
In a word... HELP!
Any idea what's going on?
Cheers,
Phil.

MidiOX has rather a lot of features, so it can be hard to find what you
need.
Make sure you only have the output from the PC running to the P3's
input. Don't feed the P3's output back into your PC in case you get a
loop.
Start MidiOX, click on 'Options', 'Midi Devices...' and check the midi
output you want to use is highlighted in the list.
Then click 'OK', and choose 'View', 'SysEx...'
From there, choose 'SysEx', 'Configure...'. Make sure 'Delay after F7'
has the checkbox ticked, and set the delay to 100 milliseconds.
'OK' that, then choose 'File', 'Send Sysex file...'.
Then just locate and confirm the syx file for the firmware, and off it
should go...

After you transmitted the dump from Logic, did the display show the
flash had been succesfully written ?
It should show "sizeE300 chkA672" for the most recent build.
If it fails you'd get "Code CHK Error!", with "restart" on F2.
I uploaded an AVI of a successful flashing to the Yahoo files section,
if it's any help.

It shouldn't go blank. It should display "Start F/W TX Now"
It could be you have a corrupt bootblock, or possibly a wiring problem
with the display module though that seems unlikely.
If you want to send me the CPU I'll check it out for you. I'm off to
Synth DIY in Cambridge next weekend, so you'd need to get it to me quick
if you want it back next week.

Just to say, I had the odd 'bad data' at this rate, so I dropped it to
250mS, worked like a treat, even if a little slow.

No, nothing on display after i did the dump until i hit sequencer
stop when it shows BAD DATA! I tried to watch the .AVI but i've no
codec for it on this PC, doesn't sound like i'm seeing all i should
be though. I'll sort midi-ox out and give it one more try this
morning, If I don't get any joy i'll pop it back in the post pronto!
Thanks Colin.

Yup, I did this first as it seemed to be working but with garbled
screen. Thanks anyway :)

Just a thought. When you first powered up the P3, did you do a power-
up initialisation? i.e. hold down F1 and keystep 7 at the same time
as applying power. This will clear out any garbage from the RAM.

It's an easy step to forget, but vital to getting the P3 to work
properly.

All the best

Andy

I just had another look at midi-ox, went though it as you suggested,
which looks like what i was doing anyway, selected output device,
clicked ok, adjusted sysex settings etc, tried several ways to send..
loading first, highlighting then sending... using send in the menu,
copying it to the display window, sending it from there... you name
it i've tried it.. the only thing i get out of midiox is a message
saying "no output device is selected or there are no sysex buffers
only manual dump supported" even though the device is selected.. well
it says output opened in the monitor! It's a fresh install on a clean
win2k system.

Ooops.. I just realised I was using v6.0 ! Will try v7.0 later..

Anyway, its all academic at the moment as when i switch P3 on in any
mode i get "CHKFAIL=FAE1" :-(

Yes, I watched the .avi and it was very helpful.. it tells me that
there's an awful lot I'm not seeing!! :-)

I've carefully teased it from the socket, tenderly wrapped it up
(with a return label and some stamps) and popped in the post about an
hour ago!
I'm sure you can stir it from it's coma by singing it scottish
lullabys, poking it with a sharp stick, zapping it with large
voltages or whatever it is you tech types do!
Thanks Colin :-)

Ah.. thought it might be something like that, I'll be doing my bit by
sacrificing a goat and cavorting in a black magik stylee with a coven
of naked vigins at midnight tonight.
You think that might help?

It's just unfortunate if it happens in the bootloader rather
> than the main code...

Oh.. you'll be taking your boot to it then?!? ;-)

Thanks
Phil

Actually it's more to do with wearing a loin cloth, dancing in circles
around the IC and make 'woola woola' noises.
But I'm sure I can fix it either way.
I've had one other CPU (out of 70+) suffer flash amnesia, and a re-write
fixed it. It's just unfortunate if it happens in the bootloader rather
than the main code...
