OSv4 developments?

OSv4 developments?

2009-04-09 by ch.³l

Hi Colin,
i've had some hardware changes in my setup which has led to a different workflow, and I now find myself using the remote-control track switches and part switching quite a lot.
In the P3 RemCon pdf cc #18 is listed as 'multi-function track select', in an attempt to find out what exactly this cc does (haven't found an answer btw) I searched the groups archive, and came across a number of posts about more remote-control options you were looking to add and a few alterations/improvements you'd like to make to pattern edit mode;
here's one: http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/analogue-sequencer/message/5435
and here's another: http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/analogue-sequencer/message/5738

As it's been over half a year since the latest beta (v28) has been released, and none of the stuff you mention in those posts has been implemented yet I was wondering what the current status of the beta v4 os was, and if a newer version is to be expected.

There's two things i'd personally really like to see:
* remote control of the knobs in play mode
* a method (key-combo?) to have pattern edit mode's sculpt & randomize functions affect only the current bar in a pattern.

Lastly i'd just like to say that I was perfectly happy using OSv3 before I had the memX expansion, but since i've made the switch to v4 I have to say it's a lot more intuitive to work with, and I now understand why you chose to go the v4 road.. :)

grtz, Chiel

Multi-function select steps the specified track through a number of modes -
mute/umute/record.
It's designed to work with a foot controller that only has 8 assignable
switches - each switch can be assigned to step one track through the
different modes.

I still intend to finish off a few things, I just haven't had time to work
on it for several months.
Various other projects (electronic and otherwise) will be finished soon, so
I will try to get a 'release' version of v4 out there, so I can leave it at
that and dedicate coding effort to cirklon.
On the off-chance that more than one P3 owner has a Yamaha GX-1, this might
be of interest...

They both sound pretty simple to achieve...

Having used v4 for so long myself, I find v3 almost impossible to use - I
just can't remember how it all hangs together.
There are some things in v4 I wish I had done differently though, and of
course, these will appear in cirklon.

Cheers,
Colin

Hehe yeah, I know what you mean. I've another one to upload later that's

What's the synth with the tenori-on style grid lights? Looks cool. :)

Tim was in charge of filming and took a rather floaty approach to the
whole thing, bless. We did another too; I hesitate to mention it since
they're all so similar really. Still:

GX-1

I don't think they're anything like the voice cards (a mere four) in my cs50, or I might have been in for one..... what is the number on the main SSK IC on those cards? yamaha made a lot of proprietary ICs in the late 70s but made up for this transgression by providing reasonable support (for the CS series at least) until quite recently; I got service sheets for the cs50, & several quite tricky components for a cs30 as recently as 4 years ago; the machines were built in 1974 & 1978 respectively.

so but is that mr reid's machine that came from an australian piano teacher on a tractor through his neighbour's garden one christmas while he was away? or not? there can't be many GX-1's in the uk..... does keith emerson still have one?

& if this means you're up for a bit of on-commission work, how about the standalone FTS device I was after? :-)

Holy crap what a monster.

Instant recall of the Fanfare for the Common Man vid with Keith behind the
GX1 and in front of the big moog. The snow must have created havoc with the
tuning. :)

Remember reading an article somewhere about someone importing one of these
from Australia. Very humourous read.... Wasn't this one was it?!

mr reid said in his article that there were only a few, so I figured....
well, whatever. he came to my workplace once to buy an MG-1, but when I switched it on, something had gone wrong with the rubbish polyphonic bit so he left empty-handed. the MG-1 is still here & still needs mending, though I've had the right part for several years. [sigh]

I'm guessing that three doepfer maq 16/3s would probably not fall into this category then. arse. I will continue to shove their dirty output through my p3s for now.

The GX voice cards have discrete circuits inside the potted modules.
Each potted circuit has a pretty close functional equivalent in the later IG
custom chips they produced, used in the likes of the CS50.
I'd say there are probably more similarities than there are differences.
Obviously a synth with 36 voice cards is going to sound a little fatter than
one with 4.

Client confidentiality precludes my identifying the lucky bar steward who
owns this one.
There are probably more of them around than you might think though.

That depends on whether you want me to retrofit it to some awesomely cool
piece of gear I'd need to work on for fair a period of time ;-)
