French COnnection sample

2004-05-12 by surbahars

This is a REALLY bad recording... using an old grade school
Wolensack type cassette recorder with built in mic... but....

here is a sample file of the French Connection. Three samples in
one cut...

Using the keyboard mode on a piece by messiaen... lots of reverb.

Keyboard mode again on another piece by Jacques Charpentier. Lots
of reverb.

Some sample sliding.. and then..

Finally.. a piece by Milhaud using Ribbon. Pitch problems, but I am
a beginner! New to Keyboard playing even.

I will try to get a better copy soon. Open this using WM player
open URL option...

All I have right now is the VCO and VCA! I also have a reverb box..
but I forget the name. Pretty simple!

Re: French COnnection sample

2004-05-15 by uelogy

cool, that what i thought i could start with. my question is also,
seeing as there is only 2 units the VCO and VCA, i am thinking of
getting a couple of vco's... but seeing as there is 2 units, how do
you power them, and also, how do you send the signal out to the
mixer? i thought you needed a rs270 to convert to 1.4 inch size...

Re: French COnnection sample

A mixer could be nice. I just use mini plugs to connect the
keyboard to the vco and then to the vca. Then I use a cable with a
mini plug on one end and a full size on the other to plug into my
reverb, which then plugs into my Danelectro amp. Decidely low
tech.. and low cost compared to more fully realized options.

Re: French COnnection sample

cool, i think i shall approcah it that way too... is it difficult to
power the moduals? i have read alot of confusing post aboutpowering
the AS moduals.. or is it actually easy... ?

When I bought the modules through Big City I think the name is, I was going to use a medical power supply that was affordable. He said I could but was really warning me against it... so I ended up buying the rack and supply. Sorta glad I did. Makes it easy.

ok, hmmm confusing... i am thinking of getting the French connection
and 2 vco's and a vca, whould i need to get a rack power supply you
spoke of... what exactly is a rack supply, i hadnt heard of them, not
mentioned on the site. i would then use my own effects for reverb ie:
my kaoss pad etc... so yea.. sorry to keep hassling ya, im just young
with little cash so im really want to know what im doing.

It's U.S. dollars. Personally I think Big City Music prices are way too
much, its cheaper to order stuff direct from the UK and have it shipped over.

Take care.

To get a nice ondes sound requires a mix of a sin and saw wave and a
nice reverb am i correct. also, would you be able to post your patch
config for your ondes sound, thanks

Re: French COnnection sample

hey Bryan, your help on this topic has been fantastic, thank you so
very much for taking the time to help me, and other ondes enthuesists
(hmmm did i spell that right, prob not..).

yes i have heard the tonal qualities that you were mentioning, i have
downloaded many samples of real ondes and the tonal changes are quite
unique. But you will be glad to know that i did notice these tonal
differences you spoke of on your sample. your sample, although rough,
has become a frequent item on my playlist. I was concerned that the
sounds, that i identify with with ondes martenot would be missing,
and the french connection would become a costly gimmick. But your
demonstration has displayed that the French connection does infact
quite accuratly replicate the sound of the ondes, well i liked what i
heard anyway.

Its interesting to note that Ms. Loriod's book notes that the ondes
is saw wave fundamental, as i have always thought sine. but its that
deep saw-esque sound that i really like on the ondes, which was
actually played on your sample, the bit when you go from playing the
keys, to playing the ring controller, those swoops.
I thought the ondes was sine fundamental because those high pitched
notes really sound rounded and much like a high sine wave, as opposed
to the rough saw wave. but im sure this is covered in Loriod's book.

anyway, a big thankyou for all your input.

With a cello, for example, you can also vary the pressure on the
bow. Doing so gives the instrument a totally different sound. Even
a french horn, my instrument, can change the nature of the sound with
the hand in the bell, tongue technique and air force. All of this
can be done within one note. With the reverb unit I use, the nature
of the sound does change given the manipulation of the volume button
in the left hand. It allows me to shape a note with timbre and well
as volume. The nature of the sound changes if I give a slight kick
in volume somewhere in the note. The effect can be different
depending where in the note you do it. Don't expect too much because
the effect is subtle, but I tried to do some of that in the sample I
have online and at least I hear a difference.

Re: [analogue_systems] Re: French COnnection sample

2004-05-17 by Bryan Lowe

I am at work now, but will gladly post my patches this evening Seattle time. I bought a Onedes Martenot study book written by Ms. Loriod. It gives a block diagram of the original Ondes. it shows some of the wave forms. I will try to scan a copy of that page for you. As I recall, it starts with a saw wave and modifies that.

I use the revereb unit for a couple of reasons.

First, the original Ondes had two resonating speakers. One with a gong and the other with resonating strings somewhat along the lines of a sitar I guess. If you have any recordings of the Ondes you can hear those changes. When I have asked others with more experience about how to recreate those sounds with modules nobody responded. When combined with my fiscal resources, or lack of resources, my options were limited.

There was also a concert version of the speaker which used reverb springs in the amp since the accoustic nature of the speakers was so quiet.

I have also found that an electronic keyboard like this has only volume and tempo to express the emotion and feeling of the piece. With a cello, for example, you can also vary the pressure on the bow. Doing so gives the instrument a totally different sound. Even a french horn, my instrument, can change the nature of the sound with the hand in the bell, tongue technique and air force. All of this can be done within one note. With the reverb unit I use, the nature of the sound does change given the manipulation of the volume button in the left hand. It allows me to shape a note with timbre and well as volume. The nature of the sound changes if I give a slight kick in volume somewhere in the note. The effect can be different depending where in the note you do it. Don't expect too much because the effect is subtle, but I tried to do some of that in the sample I have online and at least I hear a difference.

More later.
