overlay warp

2009-03-11 by rvltion909

So I ordered some of the plastic overlays for my bcr and they are a bit warped so they do not fit perfectly and sort of "pop-up". I have had them on a flat surface under about 30lbs of weight for a couple days to no avail.

Anybody else had this issue? Anybody have a success story?

Hmm... timely...

I'm in the same boat. Even though mine were shipped sandwiched between cardboard they arrived warped and don't fit right (they pop up).

I'm planning on e-mailing the company (Lex Plastics) to see if anything can be done - I was thinking on sticking one in a oven under low heat to try and soften the plastic and then place some weights on top.

Any other ideas? Like rvltion909 asks, anyone else have this problem and had any success getting them flat? I think I'll go e-mail them now...

The overlays were probably cut out of a material that was stored/produced rolled up. you can possibly get rid of the memory effect
by wrapping them around a pipe or a round object reverse to the warp. when you put a sheet of paper over them you can tape them up safely.

I read somewhere about this problem a few years ago. I would not order these overlays. They appear quite expensive and I do not like their design (Why are the white labels so small?).

I once made an overlay for the BCR2000 and Stylus RMX. I sent it as a jpg file to an internet photo service (ALDI) and Igot back a 30cm x 20cm photo. I just had to cut out the holes for the knobs, the buttons and the display.

Keep us posted Jeff (I'd like to know how Lex responds)

I got this back from them this morning:

--BEGIN
Thanks for letting us know about the warped overlays. We have had a few complaints about this. The warping is due to the nature of the material the overlays are manufactured from.

We wouldn't recommend putting one in the oven, think it will just shrivel up.

Roll up the overlay (tried with one) along the length quite tightly, with the overlay facing up. Started rolling from the buttons end of the overlay. Secure with sticky tape. Leave overnight. When we unrolled it the overlay was like a concave shape. Rolled it the opposite way and looked quite flat.

Failing this I sometimes use blu-tack to secure them to the bcr. Don't know if blu-tack is available in the U.S http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-tack

Hope this has helped. See attached photos for rolled up overlay.
--END

I'm not going to have time to get to this this week, but I'll try it sometime this weekend and report back the results.

Hmm, the price seems reasonable to me. Printing onto plastic from what I understand is quite expensive to begin with. When you factor in that this is a limited appealing, 'boutique'-type product, the price seems reasonable. (to me at least, IMHO)

>and I do not like their design (Why are the white labels so small?).

Hmm, the label size seems fine to me as well. In the upper section they are 1:1 with what's already on the BCR200, and in the lower section, the labels are bigger than what's printed on the BCR2000.

My only complaints are:
1) They arrived a bit warped and don't fit properly.
2) I wish it was a single sheet of plastic, stair stepped (zig-zagged), instead of two separate pieces (but that's a minor issue).

Oh, that's a great idea! I hadn't thought of that... what kind of material did you get it printed on? I'm thinking plastic or thick/heavy cardboard stock would work. I have a BCF2000 and was wishing there was a product like the BCR overlays for the BCF, maybe I'll go that route and print one for my BCF.

Together with the shipping costs it isn't a small amount, at least to my country...

Why not a whole white overlay with enough space for your writings and symbols...? And it would be more usefull in dark illuminated situations... ;-)

It feels like a normal thick photo. More like plastik than like paper. Maybe it's a kind of coated paper or glossy material. Only when the hot sun shines on it trogh the window, it tends to warp a little bit, too... ;-)

I could give you the C*relDr*w file, so you just have to redesign the lower left section (faders instead of encoders) and to choose your favourite colours and labels.

I often thought of creating a sub-category in the download section just for overlays. What are you all thinking about this idea?
